Hello all! Starting up the monthly discussions for June 2018 book-of-the-month suggestions. This discussion is for a brand new category called BOOKSHELF CATCH-UP.

This is a catch-up book club, after all. For this category, you can nominate any book that the group has previously read. For a list of books that the group has previously read and discussed, please see the bookshelf.

The following books are NOT eligible as we have reread them as a group within the last twelve months:
American Gods by Neil Gaiman
The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood
The Book Thief by Markus Zusak
Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury
Ready Player One by Ernest Cline
The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern
All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr

I'll start off by suggesting a group read that I personally missed - The Sun Also Rises by Ernest Hemingway.

NancyJ (nancyjjj) For OVE fans, I noticed a few weeks ago that the old discussions of Ove were still up. I've been thinking about the book a lot for some reason, and just added to them myself. So while you're waiting for it to be listed as an official re-read, check it out.

NancyJ (nancyjjj) Nico wrote: "I second Memoirs of a Geisha and I add Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine"

Nico, Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine hasn't been read by the group yet (I don't think), so you can nominate it for the Modern Classics Read. Or second it if it's already nominated. It's a fabulous book.

Added - I just nominated it over there, so please second it.

message 32: by NancyJ (new)

NancyJ (nancyjjj) I second The Kite Runner which I've wanted to read for years.

I second Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch even though I knew nothing about it until I joined this group.

The ammityville horror
The scarlet letter
Treasure island

message 41: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie Gwaltney | 94 comments Hi Kayla,

Our moderator Kaseadillla has started asking the following. I think it is in the top post of the other categories, but probably should be here too.

"Not a hard and fast rule, but please try to limit your nominations to one book per category."

This particular thread is for suggesting and seconding books that the group has already read so that new members can "catch-up"

We have not yet read:
Bell Jar
Beloved
Room
The Perks of Being a Wallflower
A Thousand Splendid Suns
Night
The Ammityville Horror
The Scarlet Letter
Treasure Island

You can nominate (one or two) of these on the appropriate thread, based on publication date: 1969 and before https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/... and 1970 and after https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/....

We will be reading 1Q84 in May, so no need to nominate it again.

The Life of Pi and Memoirs of a Geisha have been nominated already, and this can count as a second for each.

If you have any questions, please reach out. Everyone here is super nice and friendly.

Isti | 14 comments I second One Hundred Years of Solitude

Welcome Kayla,

Up near the top right is a bunch of options, including Polls and Bookshelf. Check the polls after the 1st to vote on the book in each category that you'd like to read.

I think Night has come close to winning a few times. Bell jar is currently leading in the modern classic nominations.

Here is the bookshelf. We pick one each month to re-read, but you can read or add to the old discussions any time.
