Chrissy wrote: "Nominating The Plague by Albert Camus"Such an interesting book. I've read it several times.
I nominate The Iliad by Homer. I didn't think I would like something like this, but I just listened to part of an audiobook that was very entertaining (narrated by Dan Stevens).I second
Middlemarch
North and South
The Bell Jar - for those who have never read it. (I'm not sure I'll want to read it again myself though.)

When we read it I set a huge project of reading several editions at the same time, which was of course impossible! :-) So, I still have some Alices to read / reread! :-)
But I think we read only "in Wonderland", not both.
Nancy, I second The Iliad whenever it is nominated, so seconded! But I've noticed over the time that "too classic" classics rarely obtain much seconding. :-)
Lisa, thank you. I guess if the group only wants to read the first that's fine, but I think the sequel is important. 'Looking Glass' does, iiuc, have many of the scenes/ characters that we think we know/ remember from 'Wonderland.'

Thanks for the heads up. In that case I'll nominate Slaughterhouse-Five instead. It's come very close a few times, so I couldn't resist the 1.99 kindle offer with the audible version (James Franco) for just 1.99 more.

As a reminder, books that qualify for this category must have a publication date 1969 and before. If the book you wish to nominate was published in 1970 or after, please make your suggestion on the Modern Classics/Popular Reads thread.
Not a hard and fast rule, but please try to limit your nominations to one book per category.
I'll start off by suggesting North and South by Elizabeth Gaskell.
