I agree with this review of the show: https://tv.avclub.com/amc-s-adaptatio...
*****
Joe Hill’s surreal and dreamlike NOS4A2 needed a Tim Burton sensibility, but it gets a Joel Schumacher one in the drab and lifeless AMC adaptation. It’s a story that includes a killer car, magical covered bridge, and a mythical place called Christmasland, but no one behind this show could figure out the right tone, and so they largely go without one.

Been awhile since I read the book, so a lot of stuff isn't ringing familiar with me, though not sure if it's because they added/changed stuff, or I just don't recall it. Generally, I'm liking the show, although parts feel like they stuffed a bunch in to make it a full TV series (all the McQueen family drama, a lot of the Maggie story), and some parts they've skipped ahead with (Manx and Bing). Still, I'm happy with it through 3 eps.
Well, they completely butchered an awesome story by making ridiculous changes. Zachary Quinto was a horrible choice for Charlie Manx. I'm going to finish the show, but I don't recommend it at all.
Too slow moving, terribly miscast... I hope the show is dropped and not brought back for another season.

Do I detect shades of "Christine"?) but the AMC variation seems like a glorified supernatural "soap opera". A bit of a "snooze fest". (I'm up to about the fifth episode.) So, I doubt that I will read the Joe Hill book.

The book was good, Joe Hill's best, imho. It copied ideas from King but it was entertaining. The tv show just doesn't capture the book.

Thanks, Wendy for anticipating my next question which would have been...... "are the book and movie in any way alike?" The issues with the T.V. series (mostly with its casting) doesn't "inspire" me to read the book at all. As a side note, I'm so glad I read King's "The Mist" when it was first published as last year's T.V. adaptation was (IMO) quite horrendous.

I have to say, I am a bit surprised.
I guess I'm one of the few who is enjoying the show, in spite of the changes. I absolute loved the scissor episode and enjoyed seeing the artwork from
adapted for TV. I thought they did a great job with that. I also am greatly enjoying Zachary Quinto. I think he's menacing and creepy and I love the special effects when he gets low on souls.
I'm not real crazy about the actress playing Vic, but I think she's doing okay. Maggie was one of my favorite characters from the book and I'm not sure how I'm feeling about the changes as far as she's concerned.
WendyB wrote: "Too slow moving, terribly miscast... I hope the show is dropped and not brought back for another season."I agree, WendyB. It makes me sad but it deserves to get cancelled. They botched this one badly.

I've really enjoyed the show too. It's been so long since I read the book that I have no idea how much was changed or added. My only real issue has been how little Manx has been in the show (or so it seems) and Bing is just not how I pictured him in the book. But other than those little things, I really like it and look forward to another season.

I’ve only watched a few episodes, but I am enjoying it as well. I’m still uncertain of Vic’s casting, but she’s doing okay.

I'll complete the this weekend's season (2 hr.) finale, but starting a second season with this show......doubtful.
Alan wrote: "There better be a Season 2 to wrap up the last third or so of the book."There will be. I could see a casting change happening as well. There isn't anything confirmed with that, just my opinion.
This needed to be a 10-15 episode mini series. They've taken a book about 1000 pages, added more stuff that wasn't needed. What was the posh boyfriend for? Why did Bing have to know Vic? They never do just 2 seasons. So they'll stretch the next one as well. I was a bit disappointed.

I just discovered she was in the armed forces as well.
Maggie was my favorite character from the book, so maybe that's why I like her so much?
