message 7746: by April (new)

April | 4 comments I'm reading, "Fatherland" by Burkhard Bilger.

Bilger researches his family history and discovers that his maternal grandfather was a local Nazi Party Chief in a small town in Alsace. The author goes into great detail, searching archives, (10+ years) looking for documents to understand his grandfather; and to understand the collective amnesia that the locals had.

What I discover is a nation that is so burdened down with guilt they can't celebrate soccer victories, hesitant to be labeled Patriotic.
"...middle-aged Germans, like her, unaccustomed to self-pity & allergic to national pride. Theirs was a country responsible for history's bloodiest war and most efficient mass murder. They were here to wrestle with that guilt, not to make excuses for it." (page 95)
"German philologist told Milton Mayer...'Each act, each occasion, is worse than the last, but only a little worse. You would wait for one great shocking occasion, thinking that others, when such a shock comes, will join with you in resisting somehow. But the one great shocking occasion, when tens or hundreds of thousands will join with you, never comes.' " (page 150)

It is disturbing to read how the brainwashing of people happened, slowly, with the children. Math problems in school, "Every day the state spends six marks on one cripple and four and a quarter marks on one feeble-minded person. How much do the cripple and feeble-minded person cost in total, if each lives to the age of forty-five?" (page 186)

I had to read this book in portions. It gives me a great deal to think about and I wonder how history will write us in 20 years.
