1. Rand al'Thor - The Wheel of Time. Rand might just start out as backwater bumpkin, but his destiny is up there with the biggest of them and [SERIES SPOILER] (view spoiler)
2. Icarium - Malazan Book of the Fallen. Introduced in Deadhouse Gates and so down to earth, nice and friendly to begin with that it's hard to see him as a bad-ass. [SERIES SPOILER] (view spoiler)

I could easily have made a list just with Malazan people. Erikson really knows how to create memorable characters that kick ass.

2. Caine - Heroes Die (Acts of Caine). Well f;uck. If you don't know read it.
