OLYMPICS #20 : ATHLETICS | THROWING, 2/1 - 2/28
150p. min

5/5 COMPLETE

1. The Athletics competition at the Olympics feature four THROWING events : discus, hammer throw, shot put and javelin. Like the jumping events, both men and women compete in all four of these events, but separately.
👟 Read a book with only men or only women on the cover (must be at least two people); post the cover OR book #4 from a series; tell us the series-Diary of a Wimpy Kid series #4- Dog Days by Jeff Kinney-3/26/21

2. The DISCUS THROW consists of throwing a heavy lenticular disc (convex on both sides), called a discus, of a certain weight or size depending on the competitor as far as possible. Men and women throw different sized discus with varying sizes of weights depending on age. It is an ancient sport, as demonstrated by the fifth-century-BC Myron statue Discobolus. The thrower stands within a circle, spins around 1-1/2 times, then releases the discus in the direction of the target sector. The technique of discus throwing is quite difficult to master and needs much experience to perfect, thus most top throwers are 30 years old or more.
👟 Read a book with a main character who is over 30 years old; tell us the age -James Bond is probably around 40 since he was 37 in an earlier part of the series- Thunderball by Ian Fleming-3/4/21-
OR a book by an author whose first and last initials can be found in DISCUS THROW; post a link to the author's GR page

3. Like the other throwing events, the HAMMER THROW competition is decided by who can throw the implement the farthest. The "hammer" used in the hammer throw is not like any of the tools also called by that name. Instead, it consists of a metal ball attached by a steel wire to a grip. The throwing motion involves a swing or two from a stationary position, followed by 3-5 rotations of the body in a circular motion, then the release of the hammer toward the target sector. While the men's hammer throw has been part of the Olympics since 1900, women's hammer throw was first included in the Olympics at the 2000 summer games in Sydney, Australia.
👟 Read a book with a tool normally used in home improvement work shown prominently on the cover; post the cover OR a book originally published between 1900-2000 (inclusive); tell us the year-pub. 1983- The Cheshire Cat's Eye by Marcia Muller-2/2/21

4. The JAVELIN THROW is an event where the javelin, a spear slightly longer than 8 feet in length is thrown toward a target area, called a sector. The size, shape, minimum weight, and center of gravity of the javelin are all defined by IAAF (International Amateur Athletic Association) rules. The javelin has a grip about 6 inches wide made of cord and located at the javelin's center of gravity. Unlike the other throwing events (shot put, discus, and hammer), the technique used to throw the javelin is dictated by IAAF rules and "non-orthodox" techniques are not permitted. The javelin thrower gains momentum by running up to the release point within a predetermined area. A throw is legal only if the tip of the javelin lands within the sector (target area), and the tip strikes the ground before any other part of the javelin.
👟 Read a book with a character who always insists on following the rules; using spoiler tags, briefly explain OR a book where the first letter of every word in the title can be found in JAVELINTHROW (a letter can only be used as many times as it appears in the phrase); 3-word minimum, ALL words count- Hope Rides Again by Andrew Shaffer 4/6/21-

5. The SHOT PUT involves "putting" (pushing rather than throwing) the shot (a heavy spherical object) as far as possible. The shot is made of different kinds of materials, including sand, iron, cast iron, solid steel, stainless steel, brass, and synthetic materials like polyvinyl. Some metals are more dense than others making the size of the shot vary to achieve the desired weight. The first evidence for stone- or weight-throwing events was in the Scottish Highlands, and date back to approximately the first century. The first events resembling the modern shot put likely occurred in the Middle Ages when soldiers held competitions in which they hurled cannonballs.
👟 Read a book whose title begins with a letter in SHOTPUT; disregard A, An and The - Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets by J.K. Rowling-2/10/21-
OR a book with a round ball of some sort shown prominently on the cover; post the cover

Senegal's Capital: Dakar
March 1, 2021 - March 31, 2021
100p. min.
6/6

Tasks

1. African Renaissance Monument
Dominating the Dakar skyline, you cannot miss this imposing monument sitting on one of two small hills in the city. Completed in 2010 to commemorate Senegal’s 50th year of independence from France, this bronze statue depicting a man, woman, and child looking west to sea, has inspired many different emotions depending on who you ask. Meant to represent freedom and promise, many say the $30 million statue more accurately symbolizes the president’s authoritarian rule. Though rooted in controversy, it is impressive in scope and remains breathtaking in its size and sheer ambition. At 49 meters (170 feet) tall, it is taller than the Statue of Liberty and is the tallest statue in Africa. For a fee you can take a trip to its 15th floor for a 360-degree window (which forms a band atop the head of the male figure) that offers an unbelievable panoramic view of the city.

✱ Read a book with a title that begins with a letter in BRONZE (ignoring A, An or The)- Broken April by Ismail Kadare-3/4/21
OR
✱ Read a book that deals with a controversial subject (tell us what it is) OR
✱ Read a book whose author’s first & last initial is found in AFRICAN RENAISSANCE MONUMENT.

2. Ile Gorée & House of Slaves
Ile Gorée is often cited as the number one thing to do in Dakar, and it’s not hard to see why. The island’s car-free lanes, bougainvillea-draped colonial buildings, shimmering beachfront and fine views are undeniably alluring. But its tranquility hides a heart-breaking past. It is registered as an UNESCO World Heritage Site for once being the largest slave-trading center in West Africa. Your visit here should start at the 18th century La Maison des Esclaves (House of Slaves). It is the sole remaining slave house
on the island and was established as a museum in the 1960's. The exhibits serve as a reminder of the brutality, cruelty, and scale of the transatlantic slave trade and the striking memorial stands in honor of the countless victims of this tragic period in
Africa’s history.

✱ Read a book that takes place on an island -Japan- My Brother's Husband, Volume 2 by Gengoroh Tagame-3/2/21
OR
✱ Read a book tagged HISTORICAL on its GR Homepage OR
✱ Read a book whose author’s first & last initial is found in ILE GOREE - HOUSE OF SLAVES.

3. African Art
Dakar is a thriving hub for African art and every two years it hosts the oldest and largest contemporary art show in Africa: the Dakar Biennale. The capital is also home to several absorbing museums and galleries, such as the IFAN Museum of African Arts and Galerie Arte in the downtown area. The newest addition to their art scene is the impressive Museum of Black Civilizations which offers a wide selection of works. But the hidden gem you must seek out is the Village de Arts where artists both work on, and exhibit, their craft to the public. You will love this unique creative space and enjoy chatting with the artists.

✱ Read a book with a cover you think is particularly "artistic" OR
✱ Read a book with a character that works in the field of art (tell us who) OR
✱ Read a book whose author’s first & last initial is found in AFRICAN ART.- Bless Me, Ultima by Rudolfo Anaya 3/3/21

4. Sacred Spaces
Senegal, and Dakar in particular, is well-known for its religious tolerance, with the majority Muslim and minority Catholic populations living together in perfect harmony. As such, the city has a rich tapestry of stunning mosques and churches. Two notable mosques to visit are Mosque El Hadji Omar Al Foutiyou with its distinctive green dome and four minarets, and the Mosque of the Divinity, which is uniquely set in a cove with its twin towers staring out across the endless Atlantic. In downtown you will find the imposing Notre Dame des Victories Cathedral (Our Lady of Victories), which seats over 3,000 people. It was built by the French and consecrated by the Archbishop of Paris in 1936. Be sure to check out the mesmerizing fresco of man’s ascension to heaven in its inner dome.

✱ Read a series book #2 or #4 -series #2- Rodrick Rules by Jeff Kinney-3/17/21
or a book with over 3,000 ratings on its GR Homepage OR
✱ Read a book in which religion plays an important part (tell us how) OR
✱ Read a book whose author’s first & last initial is found in SACRED SPACES.

5. Lake Retba (Lac Rose)
Lake Retba, more commonly known as Lac Rose, is Senegal’s very own Dead Sea. Situated just north-east of Dakar, this shallow lake is so named because its remarkably high salt content turns the water varying shades of pink. The saline content in the lake can be as high as 40% (more than the Dead Sea), which means you simply can’t sink. This vast lake is the main source of income for many local Senegalese. Salt workers extract thousands of kilograms of salt each year and more than a thousand salt collectors work around the lake on a daily basis. Go for the day, settle into a lakeside restaurant, or rent a quadbike on the adjacent beach, and then bob in the water without the need of an inflatable - legs and arms splayed, is mandatory.

✱ Read a book with a cover that is primarily pink OR
✱ Read a book with a MC whose first name starts with a letter in SALT OR
✱ Read a book whose author’s first & last initial is found in LAKE RETBA OR LAC ROSE.- Three Blind Mice and Other Stories by Agatha Christie-3/19/21

6. Ride the Waves
Dakar has long been a secret-surfer’s paradise but the news is spreading and it is fast becoming one of the world’s hottest surf spots. Sitting on a peninsula that catches swells from both north and south, locals, expats, and visitors are spoiled for choices when it comes to riding the waves and there is a spot for every ability. Learners may want to find their sea legs on the more forgiving beaches of Virage and Yoff, while
those more advanced can take on the rocky reefs of Ouakam and Vivier. With a myriad
of dedicated surf hostels, camps, bars, and rental shops dotted around the northern end of Dakar, it’s the perfect place to get your surf on.

✱ Read a book with waves or a surfboard on the cover OR
✱ Read a book that takes place in a beach town OR
✱ Read a book whose author’s first & last initial is found in RIDE THE WAVES.-Woman Far Walking by Witi Ihimaera-3/16/21

Landmarks of the World - The Taj Mahal
March 1, 2021 to April 30, 2021
100p.min.
8/8

Tasks

1. The Taj Mahal, India's most famous monument, is a shimmering white marble mausoleum in the city of Agra. It is built on the southern bank of the Yamuna River, and was commissioned in 1632 by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan as a tomb for his favorite wife, Mumtaz Mahal, who died during childbirth. It is part of a 42-acre complex, which also includes a mosque, guest house, and formal gardens. Though it was completed in 1648, other projects, such as the gardens and surrounding buildings, continued for another five years. The total cost of the complex in 2020 dollars came to about $956 million, and employed around 20,000 artisans (plus some 1,000 elephants) under the supervision of an architectural board.

*Read a book tagged ROMANCE on its GR Homepage OR a book where the first letter of every word in the title can be found in TAJ MAHAL MAUSOLEUM (three word minimum).- The Last Straw by Jeff Kinney-3/26/21

2. There are four arched gates that serve as entrances to the complex and gardens. The Western gate acts as the main entrance to the tomb and is constructed from red sandstone with decorative marble insets. When you first approach the gate you are treated to an optical illusion. The way it frames the Taj makes it appear to be incredibly close and large but as you pass through the gate, it appears to actually shrink in size. Continuing on, you approach the tomb via walkways that border an impressive central pool which reflects the domed structure. Surrounding this waterway are beautifully maintained landscaped grounds.

*Read a book with water on the cover (post cover; bonus for a reflection on the water) OR read a book with a four word title (all words count).- Aya of Yop City by Marguerite Abouet-3/24/21

3. The mausoleum itself is constructed of white marble and is almost perfectly symmetrical. It is a "modified octagonal", consisting of four long sides and four chamfered corners. Its most spectacular feature is the central dome, which, due to its shape, is called an onion or guava dome. The top is decorated with a lotus design and a finial, and is about 144 ft high. It is surrounded by four smaller domes, along with four towers (or minarets) that were built for prayers. These minarets tilt slightly outwards to prevent them from crashing on top of the dome in the event of a natural disaster.

*Book a book with a MC whose first name starts with a letter in MARBLE OR read the fourth book in a series.-series #4- Dog Days by Jeff Kinney-3/26/21

4. The exterior decorations of the Taj Mahal, as well as the gates, are among the finest of Mughal architecture. The decorative elements were created with semi-precious stone inlays and carvings. In line with the Islamic prohibition against using anthropomorphic forms, the decorations consist of calligraphy, abstract forms or floral motifs. The imported inlay stones include jade, lapis lazuli, coral, onyx, bloodstorne, carnelian, cats eyes and turquoise, polished and leveled to the surface of the walls. Throughout the complex are passages from the Qur'an. For example, the calligraphy on the Great Gate reads "O Soul, thou art at rest. Return to the Lord at peace with Him, and He at peace with you."

*Read a book with flowers or jewels on the cover (post cover) OR read a book with a title that begins with a letter in MUGHAL (ignore A, An or The).- My Brother's Husband, Volume 2 by Gengoroh Tagame-3/2/21

5. Another alluring feature of the exterior of the Taj Mahal is its propensity to change colors, depending on the time of day. From dawn to dusk, the sun transforms it. It may seem pearly gray and pale pink at sunrise, dazzling white at high noon, and an orange-bronze when the sun sets. In the evenings, the Taj can appear translucent blue. Special tickets are even sold for full moon and eclipse viewings.

* Read a book with an almost all white, pink or blue cover OR read a book that has a color in its title.- Devil in a Blue Dress by Walter Mosley-4/1/21

6. The smallish interior is open to visitors, and contains the cenotaphs of Mumtaz Mahal and Shah Jahan in an eight-sided chamber ornamented with a carved lattice screen and walls covered by intricately carved marble panels with the gem inlays. As the mausoleom was originally intended solely for Mumtaz, her cenotaph is centrally located in the room. Her husband was later interred next to her, and his sarcophagi is supposedly the only thing out of symmetry in the entire complex. Of interest is the fact that these are for display only, as their bodies were actually buried in a room below.

*Read a book with two like objects on the cover (post cover) OR read a book that is second in a series.- series #2- Rodrick Rules by Jeff Kinney-3/17/21-

7. Age and pollution has taken a toll on the Taj Mahal’s gleaming white marble façade, which has yellowed under the sooty conditions. As such, the monument's walls are given an occasional spa day via a mudpack treatment called multiani mitti. This traditional recipe used by Indian women to restore radiance is applied, and then washed off with brushes, after which the Taj’s blemishes vanish, and its glow returns.

*Read a book in which the MC has a spa day or some other type of get-away (explain what it is) OR read a book in which the author's first and last initials can be found in MUDPACK TREATMENT.- Bless Me, Ultima by Rudolfo Anaya 3/3/21-

8. The Taj Mahal was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983 for being "the jewel of Muslim art in India and one of the universally admired masterpieces of the world's heritage". It is regarded by many as the best example of Mughal architecture, which combined Indian, Persian and Islamic influences, and is a stunning symbol of India's rich history. In 2007, it was declared a winner of the New 7 Wonders of the World initiative. It normally attracts 7–8 million visitors a year.

*Read a book originally published in 1983 or 2007 -pub. 2007- Last Night at the Lobster by Stewart O'Nan-3/11/21
OR read a book that has a 7 in the total page count (share page count).

A–Z BOOK COVERS 2021
Timeframe: March 1, 2021 - February 28, 2022
150p. min

Once again this year, we’re challenging you to find items on the covers of the books you read that begin with each letter of the alphabet. It can be any ONE-WORD item that can easily be seen in the GR thumbnail. For example: For B, you can use a bone, a blanket, a book, whatever. A blue car would work for C (car), but NOT for B (blue).

Letters in the author's name or in the book title will not work, unless the mod running the challenge makes a special exception.

PLEASE NOTE: If we have to go to the book's main page to see an item on the cover, or if we need to enlarge the cover, the item is probably not large enough to be used for this challenge.

If you have trouble finding items beginning with Q, U, X, Y and Z, you may use an item in which the letter appears – for example: a gypsy could be used for Y. You may only one each book once!

GIANT PANDAS

Duration: Mar 01, 2021 - Jul 31, 2021

Completed: 20/20

1 & 2.
--Do any two of these:
🐼 Read a book with a black and white cover (no shades of grey! Title and author information can be a different color. Post the cover).
✔🐼 Read a book in which all the words in the title begins with a letter in "Ailuropoda melanoleuca" (letters can only be used as many times as they appear in the phrase. all words count, 3 words minimum).- Untold Night and Day by Bae Suah - 6/7/21
✔🐼 Read a book whose original year of publication has two of the numbers from the following: 1, 8, 6, 4 (let us know the year first published).-pub. 2018- My Brother's Husband, Volume 2 by Gengoroh Tagame-3/2/21-

✔3. For many decades, the precise classification of the giant panda was under debate because it shares characteristics with both bears and raccoons. However, molecular studies indicate the giant panda is a true bear, part of the family Ursidae. These studies show it diverged about 19 million years ago from the common ancestor of the Ursidae. The giant panda has been referred to as a living fossil.
🐼 Read a book set during ancient times (I'll accept anything older than 10 AD, mythical stories set on earth are fine, tell us when the book is set) -or- read a book whose author's initials are in the word "URSIDAE" (ignore middle initial).- Hope Rides Again by Andrew Shaffer 4/6/21

✔4. The word panda was borrowed into English from French, but no conclusive explanation of the origin of the French word panda has been found. The closest candidate is the Nepali word ponya, possibly referring to the adapted wrist bone of the red panda (red panda is native to Nepal). The Western world originally applied this name to the red panda. In many older sources, the name "panda" or "common panda" refers to the lesser-known red panda, thus necessitating the inclusion of "giant" and "lesser/red" prefixes in front of the names.
🐼 Read a book whose title matches that of another book on your shelves exactly (post links to both books) -or- read a book with a mostly red cover (post the cover).- Diary of a Wimpy Kid by Jeff Kinney-3/15/21- Diary of a Wimpy Kid (Diary of a Wimpy Kid, #1) by Jeff Kinney

✔5. Historically, artistic representations of the giant panda have been rare in China, possibly because of the solitary nature of the animal. But, since the earliest collection of Chinese writings, the Chinese language has given the bear 20 different names, such as huāxióng ("spotted bear") and zhúxióng ("bamboo bear"). The most popular name in China today is dàxióngmāo (literally "giant bear cat").
🐼 Read a book with an X in the title -or- read a book with a cat on the cover (post the cover).- Ruddy Gore by Kerry Greenwood 3/5/21- Ruddy Gore (Phryne Fisher, #7) by Kerry Greenwood

✔6 & ✔7. Two subspecies of giant panda have been recognized on the basis of distinct cranial measurements, color patterns, and population genetics:- the nominate subspecies, principally found in Sichuan, display the typical stark black and white contrasting colors; and the Qinling panda, restricted to the Qinling Mountains in Shaanxi, have light brown and white patterns instead of the usual black and white.
🐼 Choose a genre while signing up and read two books from different subgenres. One needs to have a mostly black cover, the other mostly brown (post subgenres and covers).
Black cover- Literature- "Albanian Literature"- Broken April by Ismail Kadare-3/4/21- Broken April by Ismail Kadare
Brown cover- Literature- "American Literature"- The Vile Village by Lemony Snicket 7/6/21- A Summons to Memphis by Peter Taylor

✔✔8 & 9. A newborn panda is about the size of a stick of butter—about 1/900th the size of its mother—but females can grow up to about 200 pounds, while males can grow up to about 300 pounds as adults. Although slow-moving, they can swim and wade through water; are agile climbers; and use an enlarged wrist-bone, called a pseudo-thumb, to manipulate bamboo.
🐼 Read two books: a full sized book that is at least 250 pages, and a half step book or a short story from the same author. The half-step book or short story can be any size. If the short story doesn't have its own GR page, link any website that mentions it. Martin Chuzzlewit by Charles Dickens-11/26/21- AND- A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens-3/20/22

✔10. The giant panda has a body shape typical of bears. It has black fur on its ears, eye patches, muzzle, legs, arms and shoulders. The rest of the animal's coat is white. Although scientists do not know why pandas are black and white, speculation suggests that the bold coloring provides effective camouflage in their shade-dappled snowy and rocky habitat, and that their eye patches might facilitate them identifying one another. The giant panda's thick, wooly coat keeps it warm in the cool forests of its habitat.
🐼 Read a set in a cold climate (tell us where) -Switzerland ski slopes- :: On Her Majesty's Secret Service (James Bond, #11) by Ian Fleming by Ian Fleming-9/16/22

✔11 & ✔12. Despite its classification as a carnivore, the giant panda's diet is primarily herbivorous, consisting almost exclusively of bamboo. However, the giant panda still has the digestive system of a carnivore, as well as carnivore-specific genes, and thus derives little energy and little protein from consumption of bamboo. The average giant panda eats as much as 20 to 30 lb. of bamboo shoots a day to compensate for the limited energy content of its diet. This has affected the panda's behavior. The giant panda tends to limit its social interactions and avoids steeply sloping terrain to conserve its energy.
Read a book each from any two of the lists below. Tell us which lists you chose and the position of your book within the list.
🐼 Greenest Books Ever-p.3 #235- The Last Straw by Jeff Kinney-3/26/21
🐼 Books I Became So Obsessed With I Stopped Everything Else in My Life to Finish-p.8-#749- Where the Sidewalk Ends by Shel Silverstein-3/31/21
🐼 Food on the Cover
🐼 Fictional Characters With Social Anxiety or Social Impairment

✔13. Giant pandas are terrestrial animals and primarily spend their lives roaming and feeding in the bamboo forests of the Qinling Mountains and in the hilly province of Sichuan. They are generally solitary. Social encounters occur primarily during the brief breeding season after which the male leaves the female alone to raise the cub. Pandas do not establish permanent dens, instead they take shelter in rock crevices or hollow trees. For this reason and because of their low energy diet, they do not hibernate, and will instead move to elevations with warmer temperatures. Though they are assumed to be docile, they are known to have attacked humans, presumably out of irritation rather than aggression.
🐼 Read a book with a single parent main character (tell us who) -or- read a book in which the main character moves from town to town for whatever reason (tell us who and why they move).-The Beaudelaire kids keep getting put in the foster care of different people in the series and again here- The Ersatz Elevator by Lemony Snicket 3/23/21

✔14. The giant panda is a vulnerable species, threatened by continued habitat loss and habitat fragmentation, and by a very low birthrate, both in the wild and in captivity. It has also been a target of poaching by locals since ancient times and by foreigners since it was introduced to the West. Its range is currently confined to a small portion on the western edge of its historical range, which stretched through southern and eastern China, northern Myanmar, and northern Vietnam.
🐼 Read a book in which someone or something is hunted (using spoiler tags if needed, let us know how your book fits) -or- read a book which is confined to a small area (any book set in a tiny town will do or even if a book is set in a tiny portion of a city like NYC. Let us know how the book fits).- all the action takes place in the Peckham Rye neighborhood of London in The Ballad of Peckham Rye by Muriel Spark- 3/5/21

✔15. In 1963, the Chinese government set up Wolong National Nature Reserve to save the declining panda population. Since then, the government has established more than 50 panda reserves, but only around 67% of the total wild panda population lives in reserves, with 54% of the total habitat area being protected. But still, this effort is paying dividends. Wild panda numbers have rebounded, and the pandas have been upgraded from Endangered to Vulnerable on the global list of species at risk of extinction, following a population growth of nearly 17% in the 2000s.
🐼 Read a book in which a scene occurs in a national park or nature preserve -or- read a book in which a plan to save something or someone is successful (if it's not spoiler-y, tell us how your book fits).- James Bond saves the world from those who have stolen nuclear weapons in Thunderball by Ian Fleming-3/4/21

✔16. The biological diversity of the panda’s habitat makes the giant panda an excellent example of an umbrella species conferring protection on many other species where pandas live. In other words, when pandas are protected, other animals that live around them are also protected, such as multicolored pheasants, the golden monkey, takin, and crested ibis. Pandas also bring sustainable economic benefits to many local communities through ecotourism.
🐼 Read a book with a multicolored cover (at least 4 colors, post the cover) -or- read a bestseller.- Three Blind Mice and Other Stories by Agatha Christie-3/19/21

✔17. Gifts of giant pandas to American and Japanese zoos formed an important part of the diplomacy of the People's Republic of China (PRC) in the 1970s, as it marked some of the first cultural exchanges between China and the West. This practice has been termed "panda diplomacy". By 1984, however, pandas were no longer given as gifts. Instead, China began to offer pandas to other nations only on 10-year loans, under terms including a fee of up to US$1,000,000 per year and a provision that any cubs born during the loan are the property of China. China also needs to ensure that more than half of the loan fee goes towards giant panda conservation efforts.
🐼 Read a book in which diplomacy is used for any reason (diplomacy in a political setting and not simply tact, - borrowed from library- Bless Me, Ultima by Rudolfo Anaya 3/3/21-

✔18,✔19, &✔20.
🐼 From this list of Celebrity Pandas Alive Today, choose any three, and read a book each with the title beginning with a letter in the name of the panda, and the author's first and last initial in the current location. Tell us the name of the panda and its current location. (Choose only living pandas, please!

Challenge #790- CCC
see- https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

OLYMPICS CHALLENGE #21 : EQUESTRIAN JUMPING
150p. min.
March 1 - 31, 2021

5/5

✔1. The introduction of the Enclosures Acts that came into force in England in the eighteenth century necessitated new pursuit methods for foxhunters. Now foxhunters required horses that could jump.
🏇 Read a book that takes place in England - The Ballad of Peckham Rye by Muriel Spark- 3/5/21-
OR read a book in which a foxhunt is part of the plot; briefly describe the event.

✔2. Italian Federico Caprilli, often called the “father of modern riding,” revolutionized the jumping seat. Previously, riders would lean back and pull the reins when jumping a fence; however, this technique was awkward and uncomfortable for the horse. Caprilli’s solution was the more natural “forward seat” position which is now universally used.
🏇 Read a book whose title contains one of the following words: JUMP, BACK, FORWARD, FENCE, or SEAT (reasonable variations acceptable - i.e. jumping, backward) OR read a book whose author's first and last initial may be found in FEDERICO CAPRILLI.- Bless Me, Ultima by Rudolfo Anaya 3/3/21-

✔3. The horse made its first appearance at the Ancient Olympic Games in 680 B.C. when chariot racing was introduced. After the modern Games began, a few unsuccessful attempts (1896, 1900, 1904 and 1908) preceded the success of equestrian events in the 1912 Olympic program. Women made their first Olmyipc appearance in Jumping at the 1956 Games in Stockholm.
🏇 Read a book that takes place in Ancient Greece (bonus for a chariot race occurring!) OR read a book that features any event or industry that used to exclude women; briefly tell us what.- Several instances.... but this book is set in Saudi Arabia and the women are not permitted to drive a car in public- Finding Nouf by Zoë Ferraris-4/29/21

✔4. Riders must clear 10-13 obstacles, with heights up to 1.6 meters (5' 3") and spreads of up to 2.0 meters (6' 7"). This is true for both individual and team competition. Winners are those with the fastest times and fewest penalties.
🏇 Read a book in which a MC is an expert rider and makes at least one jump during the story; copy the passage and state its location in the book OR read book #10 - 13, inclusive, of a series; tell us the series name.- Phryne Fisher #11- Away with the Fairies by Kerry Greenwood-8/25/21 - 241p. pub. 2001-#11series-

✔5. Three elimination rounds are run, with top 20 riders moving forward to two final rounds. Scores from both rounds are combined and the fewest penalties wins.
🏇 Read a book with a "3" in its original year of publication; tell us when the book was published - Hard Luck by Jeff Kinney-5/24/21-pub. 2013-
OR read a book with an intact "20" in its total page count - i.e. 202, 420.
