BOOK TAGS, A - Z
DATE: 10/01/20 - 09/30/21
Here is how it works: for each letter A through Z, you will read a book with a tag, genre or shelf that begins with the corresponding letter. For example: the letter A could be completed by reading a book tagged as Adult Fiction; B could be completed by reading a book tagged as Banking. Tags do NOT need to appear on the book's main page in order to count.
Here is a link that may help:
https://www.goodreads.com/genres/list
For the difficult letters - Q, X, Y and Z - the letter need only appear somewhere in the tag.

Option One: Complete the tasks IN ORDER.
ITINERARY
1. London, England - The Reform Club
Upper class gentlemen of the 19th century frequented “gentlemen clubs” on a regular basis. Fogg’s bet was made in The Reform Club, which does exist. Founded in 1836, it is a private members' club that was comprised of an all-male membership for decades. It wasn’t until 1982 that it changed its rules to include the admission of women. It was the first gentlemen’s club in London to make the change.
✱ Read a book that has a male MC (tell us who) or read a book that takes place in the 1800’s.
2. Dover, England
Fogg and his valet, Passepartout ,begin their journey on the night of October 2, 1872. Their first challenge is to cross The English Channel. There isn’t a lot of detail regarding this in the book but they would have had to take a train to Dover, the closest ferry port on the Strait of Dover which is the narrowest part of the English Channel. Though now the area may be better known for the spectacular White Cliffs of Dover which bring travelers from all over the world to see.
✱ Read a book that was published in the month of October (any year) or read a book that is narrow (100 - 150 pages long).
3. Calais, France
The ferry’s destination was the French port of Calais. Since the Middle Ages it has been an important center for trading with England. Under English rule from 1347 to 1558, it was called the "brightest jewel in the English crown". Calais is still a key transport hub, but also draws visitors as a popular beach destination and is home to the Lace Museum for which the town is famed.
✱ Read a book with something “bright” on the cover (post cover) or read a book with a title that begins with a letter in LACE (you can use or ignore A, An or The).
4. Paris, France
The next step of Fogg’s journey would be getting to Paris - a 3 hour train ride from Calais. At the time, Paris was in the middle of a major restoration period following a recent revolution. Even though the iconic Eiffel Tower was not yet built, the city was gaining beautiful squares and parks and wide new avenues all converging at the famous Arc de Triomphe. Fogg would not have had the time to enjoy the charms of the city but would be switching trains and heading through the French alps to Italy on the Orient Express.
✱ Read a book with a three word title or read a book whose author's first and last initial can be found in ORIENT EXPRESS.
5. Turin, Italy
Our adventurers’ train stops in Turin, a major political center in northern Italy that served as the first capital of the Kingdom of Italy from 1861 to 1865. Today it is an important business and cultural center known for its rich architecture, numerous art galleries, churches, palaces, opera houses, piazzas, and museums.
✱ Read a book that takes place in a capital city (tell us where) or read a book that mentions one of the following (include text): art gallery, church, palace, opera house, piazza, or museum.
6. Brindisi, Italy
Fogg now heads south by rail to the charming city of Brindisi which lies on the coast of the Adriatic Sea. Due to its strategic position on the Italian Peninsula, the city has played an important role in trade. Fogg and his valet board the steamer The Mongolia for a 4 day voyage to cross the Mediterranean Sea.
✱ Read a series book #4 or read a book with the letters SEA intact in the title.
7. Mediterranean Sea
Their steamer heads out to the Mediterranean Sea which is actually made up of many smaller seas and borders 22 different countries. For hundreds of years it has served as the central superhighway of transport, trade and cultural exchange between diverse peoples encompassing three continents. The Mongolia was probably just one of many steamers crossing the sea since it boasts some of the world’s busiest shipping routes.
✱ Read a book that has a ship in the story or on the cover (post cover) or read a book that takes place in a country that borders the Mediterranean Sea.
8. Suez Canal, Egypt
Arriving in Egypt, Fogg’s first sign of trouble begins. Mistaken for a notorious bank robber, a Scotland Yard detective joins them when they reboard The Mongolia and he follows Fogg for the remainder of the journey. They travel down the newly built Suez Canal which connects the Mediterranean Sea to the Red Sea making it the shortest link between the east and the west. This important thoroughfare opened for navigation in November of 1869.
✱ Read a book with a character that is a detective or read a book that mainly takes place during the month of November.
9. Aden, Yemen
The steamer made a stop in the city of Aden. At the time, Aden was a British Colony and an important port and coaling station for trade between British India, the Far East, and Europe. The commercial and strategic importance increased considerably when the Suez Canal opened. From then and until the 1960s, the Port of Aden was one of the busiest ship-bunkering, duty-free shopping, and trading ports in the world. Unfortunately, today Aden is considered a highly dangerous destination and closed to travelers.
✱ Read a book where the MC travels to a dangerous location (tell us where) or read a book with an MC whose first name starts with a letter in ADEN.
10. Bombay (Mumbai), India
Promising the captain a reward if they arrive ahead of schedule, they cross the Arabian Sea and sail into Bombay two days early. Known as "The Gateway to India", it was a booming trade center in the 19th century and home to the country’s first railway. Fogg soon discovers the Trans-Indian Railway ends 50 miles short of Calcutta, their next destination, so he must make an alternative plan. Believe it or not, he purchases an elephant, hires a guide, and the group rides the elephant through the Indian jungles.
✱ Read a book that takes place in India or has a jungle setting or read a book with a total page count that includes both 5 AND 0.
11. Allahabad, India
The adventure continues when our travelers rescue Aouda, a young woman about to be put to her death at a Sati ceremony, a former practice in India whereby a widow throws herself onto her husband's funeral pyre. They create a plan to have Passepartout take the place of the deceased husband on the pyre - rising from the dead, scaring the priests so they can carry Aouda away. Their plan works and they even manage to make it to Allababad in time to catch the train to Calcutta.
✱ Read a book tagged ADVENTURE on its GR homepage or read a book where a funeral takes place.
12. Calcutta, India
Fashioned by the colonial British in the manner of a grand European city, Calcutta was the capital of India at the time and under British rule. It is now one of India’s largest cities and one of its major ports. Then considered British soil, Detective Fix takes the opportunity to arrest Fogg and Passepartout but of course, they escape, jump bail and hurry off to board their awaiting steamer The Rangoon which is heading to Hong Kong. Fix also boards the steamer at the last minute - he will not give up!
✱ Read a book with a double T (tt) or double O (oo) intact in its title or author’s name.
13. Singapore
During their 13 day journey across the South China Sea, the steamer makes a stop in Singapore to take on more coal. During the 19th century, Singapore quickly grew as an important trade hub, attracting immigrants from China, India, the Malay Archipelago and beyond. We discover that something is brewing between Fogg and Aouda - they disembark for a romantic carriage ride through the city. You can actually still take a horse and carriage ride through the Singapore Zoo.
✱ Read a book tagged ROMANCE on its GR Homepage or read a book with a romantic activity in it (tell us what it was).
14. Hong Kong, China
Hong Kong was another British Crown Colony in the 19th century. It was the main supplier of tea to the Commonwealth and in return they supplied the country with opium. Seeing this as his last chance to arrest Fogg, Detective Fix uses this drug to his advantage, taking Passepartout to an opium den, keeping him from informing Fogg of a change in the departure time of their next vessel, The Carnatic. The valet manages to catch the steamer but as Fix hoped, Fogg misses the departure. But Fogg still outsmarts the detective and escapes arrest.
✱ Read a book with a teacup or teapot on the cover (post cover) or read a book where drug or alcohol abuse is important to the plot (tell us how).
15. Shanghai, China
Not finding another steamer in Hong Kong, Fogg and Aouda take a pilot boat to Shanghai. One of the first Chinese ports to be opened to Western trade, Shanghai has become one of the world's largest seaports. Its striking skyline today would look like science fiction to Fogg in the 19th century. They do find a steamer that will take them both to Yokohama where they hope to meet up with Passepartout.
✱ Read a book tagged SCIENCE FICTION on its GR Homepage or read a book that takes place in a metropolitan city (tell us where).
16. Yokohama, Japan
Just south of Tokyo, Yokohama is a Japanese port that was opened to foreign trade in 1859 and became home to a large population of Chinese. Today it boasts having the largest Chinatown in all of Asia. Our travelers have all arrived safely and Fogg starts the search for his valet. He finds him working in a circus trying to earn his fare home. After being reunited, the four of them (including Detective Fix, who promises to stop trying to delay Fogg) board a paddle-steamer, the General Grant, to take them across the Pacific.
✱ Read a book with a title or author name (first or last) that starts with Y (ignore A, An or The) or read a book that has the word CIRCUS in the text (share text).
17. Trans Pacific Crossing
This is the longest portion of their journey, taking 22 days to cross the Pacific Ocean. They have spent a great deal of time on steamers which were a major driver of trade globalization. In 1867, the Pacific Mail Steamship Company launched the first regularly scheduled trans-Pacific steamship service with a route between San Francisco, Hong Kong, and Yokohama. This route led to an influx of Japanese and Chinese immigrants, bringing additional cultural diversity to California.
✱ Read a book with the ocean on the cover (post cover) or read a book with a character that is an immigrant (tell us who).

They arrive in the US via San Francisco, which had experienced two recent booms - the 1849 Gold Rush and the discovery of silver in the Comstock Lode in 1859. It had grown from a village of 800 people into a busy city of 35,000. Our travelers board the Pacific Railroad Train bound for Omaha, Nebraska not knowing that there are many obstacles ahead for them.
✱ Read a book with over 35,000 ratings on its GR homepage or read a book with TWO of the following numbers in its total page count: 1, 8, 4, 5, 9 (share page count).
19. Ogden & Salt Lake City, Utah USA
The train crosses the Sierra Nevada mountain range into the state of Nevada where it must stop and wait for a giant herd of bison to cross the tracks. They enter Utah and marvel at the Great Salt Lake, the largest salt lake in the Western Hemisphere. The train then has a 6 hour layover in Ogden, Utah so our travelers take the opportunity to cure their curiosity about Mormonism and visit Salt Lake City, the Mormon capital founded
in 1847.
✱ Read a book tagged NON-FICTION on its GR homepage or read a book that taught you something new (tell us what).
20. Medicine Bow, Wyoming USA
Traveling into Wyoming and crossing the Rocky Mountains, the train is forced to stop near Medicine Bow because the suspension bridge that crosses the river has been damaged by bad weather and they are not sure it will support the weight of the train. After much deliberation they decide they can try crossing at full speed! They barely make it across before the bridge completely collapses into the rapids of the river. Close call!!! Maybe this is a good reason why suspension bridges are rarely used for railways anymore.
✱ Read a book that got your heart racing (tell us why) or read a book with a train, bridge or river on the cover (post cover).
21. Fort Kearney, Nebraska USA
There is more excitement ahead when the train is attacked by Sioux Indians near Fort Kearney, an important stage station built in 1848 as a safe haven for Overland Trail travelers, Pony Express riders, and gold prospectors. The soldiers at the fort scare the attackers away but it was soon discovered that Passepartout had been kidnapped. Fogg departs with a team of soldiers, leaving Aouda in the capable hands of Detective Fix, and goes off to rescue his faithful valet. He is successful but when he returns he finds that the train has left without them.
✱ Read a book that has a kidnapping or rescue in the plot (briefly share details) or read a book with a title that starts with a letter in SIOUX (ignore A, An or The).
22. Omaha, Nebraska USA
Our travelers’ next mode of transportation was quite unusual - a sledge with sails! Fashioned to the “sail” over the frozen plains, it could reach a speed equal if not superior to that of the express trains. The distance between Fort Kearney and Omaha, as the birds fly, is almost 200 hundred miles. If the wind held good, the distance might be traversed in five hours, reaching Omaha in time to catch the train. And that they did with only enough time to board!
✱ Read a book from your TBR that is numbered in the 200 range (200 - 299) when sorted by date added or read a book with sails on the cover (post cover).
23. Chicago, Illinois, USA
Chicago is their next destination where they hope to find a train that will take them to New York City. The Windy City was in the throes of the “Great Rebuilding” from the devastating fire that happened the year previously, destroying 4 square miles of the city and leaving more than 100,000 residents homeless. Fogg and his companions find the city has risen from its ruins, proudly seated on the borders of its beautiful Lake Michigan. They board a train that will take them through Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey like a flash, hoping to catch the steamer bound for England.
✱ Read a book that is set in one of these US states: Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, or New Jersey or read a book that has fire as a central plot theme.
24. New York, New York USA
New York City in 1872 would look very different from the city we know. Several key landmarks would be missing: the Empire State Building, the Statue of Liberty and the Brooklyn Bridge. “Missing” is the key word here - our globetrotters arrive to discover they have missed their transportation home by just a few hours. The only steamer available is heading to Bordeaux, France. With no other options they board the Henrietta the next morning.
✱ Read a book with the letters (intact) HEN or MISS found in the title, series name or author’s name.
25. Queenstown (Cobh), Ireland
The 80 day mark is fast approaching and Fogg is getting desperate! He cannot convince the captain of the ship to make a detour so he bribes the crew to mutiny and make course for Liverpool. They encounter hurricane force winds and eventually run out of fuel. But Fogg buys the ship from the captain and has the crew burn the wooden parts of the ship for fuel. Unfortunately, they only get as far as Queenstown, Ireland, a seaport town now known as Cobh and famous for being the last port of call of the ill-fated Titanic.
✱ Read a book that has had a title change for republication (share book titles) or read a book set in a coastal town.
26. Liverpool, England
Fogg’s party catches an express mail train to Dublin where they board a ferry to Liverpool, the famous maritime city that brought us The Beatles. Fogg is ahead of schedule but Detective Fix throws him a curveball - he has a warrant for his arrest, unbeknownst to him that the real thief was actually arrested 3 days earlier in Scotland. The misunderstanding is soon ironed out, Fogg is released and charters a train to London with very little time to spare and certain he has lost the wager.
✱ Read a book where someone is arrested (tell us who) or read a book that you checked out at the library and had to renew because you ran out of time.
27. London, England
Fogg, Aouda and Passepartout finally arrive at London but are five minutes past their deadline. Fogg is feeling defeated and has spent every penny he owns. He apologizes to Aouda for bringing her on this journey but she confesses her love for him and asks that he marry her right away. Passepartout goes to find a minister and learns that they have mistaken the date - because they have traveled eastward, they gained a day crossing the International Date Line. Fogg not only has won a bride but is able to get to the Reform Club in time and wins the wager too!
✱ Read a book that includes a marriage proposal or ceremony or read a book where the first letter of every word in the title can be found in INTERNATIONAL DATE LINE (three word minimum).

Republic of Ireland's Capital: Dublin
October 1, 2020 - October 31, 2020

Tasks
✔1. Trinity College
Trinity College was founded by Queen Elizabeth I in 1592 and until 1793 was reserved for students of Protestant religion, but the first Catholic student only set foot there in 1970 because only then did the pope take away the penalty of excommunication from those who would attend this College. Women were admitted in 1904. Today it is one of the most important European universities and, despite having several interesting buildings, tourists go there mainly to visit the Old Library, which houses the Book of Kells, an amazing illuminated manuscript dating back to 800 about. On the ground floor of the Library there is an exhibition that explains how it was produced, while the upper floor is dominated by the Long Room, a 65-meter-long room, covered with shelves containing about 200,000 manuscripts, some of which are very ancient. This is a destination that a true book enthusiast cannot miss!
✱ Read a book where the MC belongs to the world of the book (writer, publisher, bookseller, librarian, restorer, etc. Tell us what it is) OR
✱ Read a book a book in which the MC's name begins with a letter found in OLD LIBRARY OR
✱ Read a book whose author’s first & last initial is found in TRINITY COLLEGE.- Guinea Bissau: From Liberation Struggle To Independent Statehood by Carlos Lopes 10/16/20
✔2. Dublin Castle
Built in 1204 by King John of England, until 1922 it was seen as the symbol of British occupation over Ireland. The original castle was almost completely destroyed by a fire in 1684 (only one tower of the medieval castle remained) and was therefore rebuilt. The State Apartments, once the residence of the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, can now be visited when not used for official ceremonies. During the guided tours you get an opportunity to see the underground excavations that in 1986 discovered part of the Norman castle and some remains dating back to the Viking occupation of the city. The Royal Chapel, not always open to visitors, preserves over 90 busts of Irish saints or famous people. The Garda Museum, dedicated to the Irish police, has also been housed inside the Castle since 2017. Finally, the Chester Beatty Library is housed at the foot of the Castle: it is a collection of manuscripts, books and religious art objects collected by the American Alfred Chester Beatty, who then donated them to the city of Dublin.
✱ Read a book with a castle on the cover (post the cover) OR
✱ Read a book set in Ireland (bonus if it is set in Dublin!) OR
✱ Read a book whose author’s first & last initial is found in DUBLIN CASTLE.- Openly Bob by Bob Smith-12/6/20-
✔3. St. Patrick's Cathedral and Christ Church Cathedral
In Dublin there are three cathedrals: two are Protestants (St. Patrick's Cathedral and Christ Church Cathedral) and one Catholic (St. Mary's Pro-Cathedral), which is the only one really frequented by the population. The two most visited are the Protestant ones. They were both built in the 12th century in place of older churches. But in modern times both fell out of favor, in fact, for a time there were taverns inside the Christ Church! During the 19th century St. Patrick was restored while Christ Church was practically rebuilt. St. Patrick's contains several works of historical interest while one wing of Christ Church is a museum (Dublinia) dedicated to Viking and medieval Dublin. Finally, Christ Church is the seat of the bishop of Dublin while St. Patrick is the national cathedral of the Church of Ireland.
✱ Read a book with a church on the cover (post the cover) OR
✱ Read a series book #2 OR
✱ Read a book whose author’s first & last initial is found in ST. PATRICK'S CATHEDRAL - A Long Walk to Water: Based on a True Story by Linda Sue Park 10/21/20or in CHRIST CHURCH CATHEDRAL.
✔4. National Museum of Ireland - Archaeology
The National Museum is Ireland's most important cultural institution - most notably its archaeological section. Although it displays artifacts dating back to Ancient Egypt and the Roman Empire, the bulk of the exhibits cover Irish history from Prehistory to the end of the Middle Ages. In particular you will find the most important European collection of gold objects dating back to the Bronze Age (between 2200 BC and 500 BC). In addition you will be fascinated by the "bog bodies" (4 bodies mummified in the Irish peat bogs) which date back to the Iron Age. There are also many artifacts dating back to the Celts, the Vikings and the medieval era. The museum is not very large, but the visit is exciting and highly satisfying.
✱ Read a book where the characters visit a museum (share the text) OR
✱ Read a book tagged ARCHAEOLOGY, HISTORY or HISTORICAL on its GR page OR
✱ Read a book whose author’s first & last initial is found in NATIONAL MUSEUM OF IRELAND.- The Austere Academy by Lemony Snicket 10/11/20
5. Guinness Storehouse
In 1799 Arthur Guinness began brewing a dark beer, setting the stage for his family's fortunes. This beer has become one of the symbols of Ireland and the Storehouse has become Dublin's biggest tourist attraction since it opened in 2000. After buying the ticket (not exactly cheap) and avoiding the huge shop selling various products under the Guinness brand, visit the exhibition that for the seven floors of the building explains the history of this brewery, until reaching the true culmination of the visit: the Gravity Bar. Located on the seventh floor, it has glass walls: here you'll be offered a half pint of beer, to sip calmly while enjoying the beautiful view of the city. According to a myth, Guinness beer loses its flavor with transport and actually today there are some variants produced abroad or for the foreign market: don't miss, therefore, the opportunity to drink the original version!
✱ Read a book where one or more characters sip a beer (share the text) OR
✱ Read a book where all the letters of the word BEER are found in the title (in any order) OR
✱ Read a book whose author’s first & last initial is found in GUINNESS STOREHOUSE.
✔6. Pub Temple Bar
The myth of Irish pubs has spread across much of the world since the 1980s, when "Irish pubs" were opened in several countries. But these pubs are very different from traditional Irish ones where there is almost never live music and food is not served. Quite unlike what happens in the pubs frequented by tourists, where they adapted to the imagination of the Irish pub where you eat and listen to Celtic music. The Temple Bar Pub, with its red façade photographed by all tourists visiting the city, respects all the canons of the Irish pub as perceived outside of Ireland. Finally, in Ireland the term “bar” is actually more used than pub.
✱ Read a book set in a pub or in a bar OR
✱ Read a book with a predominantly red cover (post the cover) OR
✱ Read a book whose author’s first & last initial is found in PUB TEMPLE BAR.- [ [book:The Man Who Died|35960911] by Antti Tuomainen-10/30/20

Duration: Sep 21, 2020 - Dec 20, 2020
Completed: 18/18
✔1. Coffee beans are actually seeds, which come from the inside of a fruit very similar to a cherry. In fact, they are often called coffee cherries. The plant’s scientific name begins with the genus Coffea, followed by the species. For example, arabica beans come from the Coffea arabica plant.
☕ Read a book with a fruit on the cover (post the cover) -or- read a book in which scientific names of a plant or animal is discussed (tell us both the common and the scientific names).- Tussac or Paradiochloa flabellata mentioned p.196- The Island of South Georgia by Robert K. Headland-11/20/20
✔2. When coffee berries turn from green to bright red in color – indicating ripeness – they are picked, processed, and dried. Processing can be wet process, which requires a substantial amount of water to wash the fruit. It can also be dry, in which the fruit is dried unwashed. Dried coffee seeds are roasted to varying degrees, depending on the desired flavor. Roasted beans are ground and then brewed with near-boiling water to produce the beverage known as coffee. It can be prepared and presented in a number of ways (espresso, French press, Caffe latte and so on).
☕ Read a book with water on the cover (post the cover) -or- read a book which takes place in a dry season or climate (tell us where and/or when your book is set). -set in South Sudan which is mostly desert- A Long Walk to Water: Based on a True Story by Linda Sue Park 10/21/20
✔3. Coffee is next only to crude oil when it comes to the world’s most traded commodity. The global consumption reaches approximately 2.25 billion cups of coffee each day. The best climates for growing coffee beans are known as The Bean Belt. This includes Papua New Guinea, Brazil, Sumatra, Honduras, Peru, Guatemala, Columbia, and Ethiopia. Coffee is now grown in over 70 countries with Brazil being the leading coffee grower of the world producing 35% of the world's coffee.
☕ Read a book you bought -Openly Bob by Bob Smith-12/6/20
or- read a book set in a Bean Belt country (tell us where the book is set).
✔4. The part of Ethiopia where wild coffee originated was called the Kingdom of Kaffa from the 14th century onward. That may be where the drink gets its name. Another theory says that the Arabians who first popularized coffee named it qahwah after one of their ancient drinks that was similar to wine. Qahwah became kahve in Turkish, then koffie in Dutch, and finally coffee in English. Cappuccino is so called because the drink resembles the clothing of the Capuchin monks.
☕ Read a book with a Q anywhere in its title (title only, no subtitles) - Ask the Cards a Question by Marcia Muller-12/2/20-
-or- read a book with a hair covering of some sort on the cover (post the cover).
✔5. Other legends and myths state that a goat herder by the name of Kaldi found the first coffee forest in Ethiopia centuries ago and he reported the mysterious beans to the local monastery. Supposedly, the monks made a beverage with the beans and felt energized. Another legend about Kaldi the goat herder also states he stumbled upon the coffee when his goats ate the cherries and became sprightly. However, the most credible accounts of early coffee drinking comes from Sufi shrines in Yemen during the 15th century.
☕ Read a book with a farm animal on the cover (post the cover) -or- read a book that makes you feel happy and energized. - Diary of a Wimpy Kid by Jeff Kinney-3/15/21
✔6. Over 60 percent of the world’s coffee is made out of Arabica beans, and they are popular and common for a reason. These beans are grown at high altitudes and therefore, they receive the perfect amount of shade and rainfall to result in a full, delicious taste. Arabica trees are usually fairly small – no more than six feet in height – and they are easy to take care of, which is one of the reasons they are such a commonplace bean to make coffee from.
☕ Read a book with a mountain on the cover (post the cover) -or- read a book with a 6 in its first published year (tell us the year). -1960- For Your Eyes Only by Ian Fleming-1/6/21
✔7. Robusta beans, grown primarily in Africa and Indonesia, are the world's second favorite coffee beans. They contain almost double the caffeine of their arabica cousins—just under three per cent, to 1.5% for arabica. This extra caffeine also helps make Robusta easier to grow, because it turns off some pests and makes the tree practically immune to disease.

-or- use a book which kept you up at night.

Instant coffee, also called soluble coffee, coffee crystals, and coffee powder, is a beverage derived from brewed coffee beans that enables people to quickly prepare hot coffee by adding hot water or milk to the powder or crystals and stirring. Instant coffee is commercially prepared by either freeze-drying or spray drying, after which it can be rehydrated. Instant coffee in a concentrated liquid form is also manufactured.
☕ Read a book that is 150-200 pages long (tell us the number of pages) -192p. - The Green Mill Murder by Kerry Greenwood-10/8/20

Kato introduced the powdered substance in Buffalo, New York, at the Pan-American Exposition. George Constant Louis Washington developed his own instant coffee process shortly thereafter, and first marketed it commercially in 1910. The Nescafé brand, which introduced a more advanced coffee refining process, was launched in 1938.

Computer scientists at Columbia University didn't want to waste a journey to the coffee pot only to find it empty, so they set up a camera to watch the coffee pot. When switched on, the camera provided a 129X129 pixel grayscale image of the coffee pot at one frame per second. The camera stream predates the world wide web by a couple of years, but it went on the web as soon as the web itself went live.

✔17. A 2017 review of clinical trials found that drinking coffee is generally safe within usual levels of intake and is more likely to improve health outcomes than to cause harm at doses of 3 or 4 cups of coffee daily. In 2012, the National Institutes of Health–AARP Diet and Health Study analyzed the relationship between coffee drinking and mortality. They found that higher coffee consumption was associated with lower risk of death, and that those who drank any coffee lived longer than those who did not. However the authors noted, "whether this was a causal or associational finding cannot be determined from our data." A 2011 review found that regular coffee consumption of up to 6 cups per day reduced the risk of several types of cancer. Trials have also found that long-term coffee consumption is associated with lower risk of Parkinson's, Type II Diabetes and so on, but adversely affects anxiety.

1. Athletics has been contested at every Summer Olympics since the birth of the modern Olympic games in 1896, and the athletics program traces its earliest roots to events used in the ancient Greek Olympics. The first event contested is believed to have been the "stadium" race, a sprint of about 192 meters. Champions have been recorded from as far back as 776 BC.
👟 Read a book set in ancient times (before 1000 BCE); tell us the year OR a book with an intact "76" in the total page count; tell us how many pages- Where the Sidewalk Ends by Shel Silverstein-3/31/21-176p.
✔2. Much like today, the ancient Olympic Games included a wide variety of track and field events such as longer foot races, a race in armor, and a pentathlon event that consisted of the stadium race, long jump, discus throw, javelin throw and wrestling.
👟 Read a book by an author who has published books in more than three series under the same name; post a link to the author's GR page and tell us the series names - The Green Mill Murder by Kerry Greenwood-10/8/20 (Phryne Fisher, Delphic Women and Corinna Chapman series)

The long racewalk is the only event currently held for men but not included on the women's program, with the exception of women taking part in the heptathlon and the 100 meters hurdles rather than the 110 meters hurdles.
👟 Read a book with less than 1932 GR ratings; tell us how many OR a book by an author whose first and last initials can be found in either AMSTERDAM **or** LOS ANGELES; post a link to the author's GR page- The Austere Academy by Lemony Snicket 10/11/20

Many of the discontinued events were similar to modern ones but at different lengths, especially in the steeplechase, hurdles, and racewalking disciplines. Cross country running was on the program from 1912 to 1924 and is the most prominent form of athletics not to be featured at the Olympics.
👟 Read a book where the first letter of every word in the title begins with a letter in CROSS COUNTRY RUNNING; all words count (2-word minimum; a letter can only be used as many times as it appears in the phrase) - New Caledonia: Essays in Nationalism and Dependency by Michael Spencer-11/1/20
OR a book originally published in a year ending in 5; tell us the year
✔5. The athletic triathlon – an unusual event, held only once and featuring gymnasts competing in the long jump, shot put, and 100 meter dash – and pentathlon multi-discipline events were phased out in favor of the decathlon, and the medley relay replaced with even-leg relays.
