Walls of brightly-colored coral encloses the underwater paradise, providing a home for a rich diversity of marine life, including sea turtles, reef sharks and abundant tropical fish such the prized clown triggerfish. DURATION : July 1-31, 2020

7/7
*****1. BUTTER PECAN
A good butter pecan ice cream is chock full of pecan halves. The rich buttery ice cream enhances the somewhat soft crunch of the pecans, making it a perennial favorite flavor in ice cream shops and stands.
🍨 Read a book by an author whose first and last initials can be found in BUTTERPECAN; post a link to the author's GR page OR a book with a 6-letter word in its title- This Town Sleeps by Dennis E. Staples 7/2/20
*****2. CHOCOLATE
It shouldn't be a surprise that chocolate ice cream lands on this list. It is thought to have originated in Naples, Italy around 1692. Hot chocolate was transformed into a solidified treat in 17th-century Europe, but didn't make its way to America until well into the late 19th century.
🍦 Read a book with something chocolate shown prominently on the cover; post the cover OR a book whose title begins with a letter in CHOCOLATE (disregard A, An and The)- To a God Unknown by John Steinbeck 7/12/20
*****3. COOKIES AND CREAM
Thought to have been introduced by burger joints and shake counters, cookies and cream ice cream has become a favorite flavor. Crushed cookies, usually Oreos, blended with vanilla ice cream combine to give us what many think is the best of both worlds – smooth ice cream and chunky cookies in one tasty dish.
🍨 Read a book with the word "AND" in the title - The Nice and the Good by Iris Murdoch 7/8/20
OR a book set in a location beginning with a letter in OREOS; tell us the location

*****5. NEAPOLITAN
If you are of a certain age, you may remember getting paper-wrapped slices of Neapolitan ice cream for dessert with your school lunch or at community potluck dinners. Initially made in the late 19th century, Neapolitan ice cream consists of strawberry, chocolate and vanilla ice cream 'slabs' next to one another. Some brands, however, swirl the three flavors together.
🍨 Read a book set in the late 19th century (1850-1899); tell us when OR a book where the first letter of every word in the title can be found in NEAPOLITAN (two-word minimum; all words count); a letter can only be used as many times as it appears in the word- Arabian Nights: The Marvels and Wonders of the Thousand and One Nights Volume I of II- 8/5/20-
*****6. STRAWBERRY
Refreshing, sweet, and summery strawberry ice cream goes back to 1813, when it was served at the second inauguration of James Madison, the fourth president of the United States. This pink dessert sometimes has chunks of strawberries mixed into the cream, or even swirls of strawberry jam.
🍦 Read a book with a fruit in the title or shown prominently on the cover; post the cover OR a book in which a president or other leader of a country plays a role (can be a real or fictional character); tell us the character and the role played- Prince Edward makes two visits to Montserrat while the volcano fumes and threatens to blow in The Volcano, Montserrat and Me: Twenty years with an active volcano by Lally Brown 8/16/20
*****7. VANILLA
The #1 best-seller on almost every list of popular ice cream flavors is vanilla, possibly due to all the children who haven't yet developed an adventurous palate. It is thought to have been created in Asia in the 14th century. The custom of making frozen desserts spread from the East to Europe when Moors and Arabs headed to Spain and refrigeration became common.
🍨 Read a book set in Asia (use this list) -set in Japan- Convenience Store Woman by Sayaka Murata 7/5/20-2016
-OR a book that has reached the #1 position of a best-seller or most-popular list; post a link to the list and tell us the date it was posted/printed

*****1. March 1st, 1867 was when Nebraska joined the United States as the 37th state. Lincoln is its capital city. Nebraska is derived from the Oto Indian word ”nebrathka”, meaning ”flat water” (for the Platte River). Its official nickname is Cornhusker State. The name is derived from the nickname for the University of Nebraska athletic teams, the Cornhuskers, which was coined in 1900 by Charles S. ‘Cy’ Sherman, a sportswriter for the Nebraska State Journal in Lincoln. The term "cornhusker" comes from the harvesting or husking the corn by hand, which was common in Nebraska before the invention of husking machinery.
✒ Read a book set on a farm - To a God Unknown by John Steinbeck 7/12/20
or- read a book with a word with a silent (unpronounced) letter in its title -or- read a book set in a state considered part of Corn Belt.
*****2. Nebraska is the only triply landlocked state in the US. To reach an ocean, gulf, or bay from Nebraska, one must travel through at least three states, such as through Missouri, Tennessee and North Carolina to reach the Atlantic Ocean, through Wyoming, Idaho and Oregon to reach the Pacific, or through Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas to reach the Gulf of Mexico. Alternatively, one can travel through the Dakotas and Manitoba, making it two US states and a Canadian province to enter the Hudson Bay.
✒ Choose an ocean and read three books to reach it. Books must be either set in the state it takes to reach the ocean, or its author's initials have to be present in the state name. You can use a combination of the two, and you don't have to choose upfront, but you do have to do this task in order!
For example, if I chose to reach the Atlantic Ocean, I could read a book set in Missouri, follow it up with a book whose author's initials in the word Tennessee, and finally read another book set in North Carolina. Note that the books only have to be in order within this one task, the rest of the challenge can be completed in any order, and in between completing this task.
Atlantic Ocean-
1. Missouri- Convenience Store Woman by Sayaka Murata 7/5/20-2016-
need KY, Ark, TN or OK next
2. Tennessee- A Summons to Memphis by Peter Taylor-7/17/21
3. NC, Alabama or GA next-Alabama- Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe by Fannie Flagg 3/20/22-
*****3. Nebraska is the only state with a unicameral legislature, which means they just have one governing body called the Nebraska Legislature. In 1986, Nebraska became the first state to have a gubernatorial election where both major party candidates were women. It was also the first state to complete a toll-free interstate system, which it did in the early 1970s. Arbor Day was created by a Nebraskan, and first celebrated in Nebraska City, where the National Arbor Day Foundation is still headquartered.
✒ Read a book with the letters U, N and I in its title, in that order, but not necessarily in the same word -or- read a book with a woman main character - Death at Victoria Dockby Kerry Greenwood 7/1/20] by Kerry Greenwood 7/1/20
or- read a book with a tree (or trees) prominently shown on the cover (post the cover).
*****4. Nebraska's Sandhills were home to some of the nation's first straw-bale buildings. The first one documented was a schoolhouse built around 1886, but it didn't last too long as it was eaten by cows in 1902. The Pilgrim Holiness Church in Arthur, built in 1928, is the oldest known straw bale church in North America, and one of only three in existence. Its straw is covered by both stucco and plaster, which makes it safe from hungry cows. (Nebraska has approximately 3 and a half times as many cows as it has people).
✒ Read a book with straw or hay on the cover (post the cover) -or- read a book with cows in the plot (they don't need to be major, just a mention or two is enough) - the cattle of Madagascar, known as zebu, are mentioned often in Muddling through in Madagascar by Dervla Murphy 7/14/20-
-or- read half step books, enough to make up the minimum 150 pages. (Tell us the number of pages).
*****5. Nebraska is where they invented Kool-Aid. (It's the state soft drink). Runza is not just the name of Nebraska's best-loved fast-food chain, but also a type of stuffed dough sandwich, a precursor to the hot pocket. The Reuben sandwich was created by a Lithuanian grocer in Omaha, and was first featured on the menu of the Blackstone Hotel. Internet has it that the McRib was invented in Nebraska, and while that is untrue, McRib does owe its existence in part to UNL (University of Nebraska at Lincoln) professor Roger Mandingo. Mandingo came up with a technique for taking little meat scraps and binding them together into a substance that can then be formed into the desired shape. Another oddball Nebraska food item which somehow failed to catch on was the “Nebraskit,” a compressed wheat block developed by the Nebraska Department of Agriculture and meant to satisfy Nebraskans' nutritional needs in the event of some unspecified Cold War catastrophe.
✒ Read a book that has one of the fruit names used in a Kool-Aid flavor in its title or cover (post the cover if you use that option, tell us the Kool-Aid flavor) -or- read a book with an author who has a Mc in their last name (Mac is fine also) -or- read a book with a cold war plot. - Goldfinger by Ian Fleming-9/14/20
*****6. Andy, a grey goose, was born in 1987 in a farm in Harvard, without webbed feet. When he was two years old, Gene Fleming, from nearby Hastings met him and became aware of his plight. Fleming, a member of a local charity for disabled children and an inventor, thought he could help the handicapped fowl. Fleming then fitted Andy with a pair of specially adapted baby-sized sneakers. After successfully teaching Andy how to walk in the shoes, the sneaker-wearing bird caught the attention of the media (as well as Nike, which supplied Andy with a lifetime supply of shoes). He subsequently became a role model for disabled children. Seeing Andy be able to walk, swim and fly with his shoes, gave inspiration and hope to people with handicaps. On October 19, 1991, Andy suddenly went missing. The following day, Fleming got a call from a local who found a deceased goose in a neighborhood park. Sadly, it turned out to be Andy, he had been murdered. There is still an unclaimed reward of $10,000 for the arrest of the killer, who is yet to be found.
✒ Read a murder mystery that gets solved within the book (please!)
The Murder on the Links by Agatha Christie-7/26/20
-or- read a book with a disabled protagonist -or- read a book with shoes on the cover (post the cover).
*****7. USA Roller Sports, the governing body for such competitive sports as speed skating, roller hockey and even roller derby, makes its headquarters in Lincoln. The nation's first rodeo was held in North Platte in 1882 as part of a Fourth of July celebration. On football game days, Nebraska’s Memorial Stadium becomes the third largest city in the state, holding over 90,000 people. Nebraska has sold out an NCAA record 375 games at Memorial Stadium, the streak dating back to 1962. Memorial Stadium is nicknamed The Sea of Red.
✒ Read a book with a competitive athlete character (tell us the sport) Watson is a rugby player at college in A Study in Charlotte by Brittany Cavallaro-7/27/20
-or- read book #3 of a series (post the series) -or- read a book with a predominantly red cover (post the cover).
*****8. Carhenge, located 10 miles north of Alliance, is a replica of Stonehenge created from junked cars covered with gray paint. Carhenge went on the market in 2011 with a price tag of $300,000, but the only interested buyer wanted to dismantle it and ship it elsewhere, so its owners instead decided to donate it to the city of Alliance. The Les Vilda Presidential Museum and Library, a monument to a hopeful presidential candidate, Les Vilda, is located in an outhouse in Wilber. He first ran for president (as a B.E.E.R party candidate), unsuccessfully, in 2008. He opened his hopeful monument in 2010. He has pledged to run until he is elected.
✒ Read a book with a car on the cover (post the cover) -or- read a book with an alcoholic drink in the title -there is a drink called Eophoria- Euphoria by Lily King-8/3/20 see- https://www.belvederevodka.com/en-int...
-or- read a book originally published between 2008-2011 (inclusive, tell us the year).
*****9. The city of Friend lives up to its name, at least as far as the crime rate's concerned – its police station is about the size of a garden shed. While the city of Scottsbluff is just one word, it's located in Scotts Bluff County. The city of Cozad lies right on the 100th Meridian, where east meets west. The small town of Cairo (which the locals call Cay-ro) may not pronounce its name in quite the same way as its Egyptian namesake, but it does have a pyramid-shaped sign, a statue of a camel, and streets named Egypt, Nile, Mecca, Syria, Medina, Nubia, Alexandria and Suez.
✒ Read a book set in a small community -Geshig, Minnesota- This Town Sleeps by Dennis E. Staples 7/2/20
or- read a book with a camel or a pyramid shape on the cover (post the cover) -or- read a book with a page count that is a multiple of 100 (200, 300 and so on, tell us the number of pages).
*****10. Doughnut holes may not be sold in Lehigh (which has been repealed apparently, common sense prevailing). Another state law prohibits children from burping in church, and threatens the parents with jail time if they did so. Shirtless gentlemen are not allowed to run around with a shaved chest in Omaha. Keep the hair on, men. Mothers are not allowed to give their daughters a perm without a state license.
✒ Read a book that is a spin-off of another book or series (tell us the original book or series) -or- read a book with a main character who is a parent-The Nice and the Good by Iris Murdoch 7/8/20
-or- read a book with a shirtless man on the cover (post the cover).
