It's not exactly a continuation. So all of this author's books take place in Tortall, so the characters will show up in different books, but each series itself is a stand alone. Does that make sense?

There's essentially the "Tortall Universe", and several different series which take place within it. They can be read as "standalone" series or as part of a larger "world" (and they're definitely great either way :P)

On Tamara Pierce's author page there are two different links that show all the books/series within the Tortal Universe.

I tend to post updates on my phone quite a bit, and it's just too difficult to post the book every time when you're using the Goodreads app, so I tend to just make a note when I start each book that the posts following that are from then on, if that makes sense?

Listening to the full cast audiobook of this series is fantastic! Sometime full cast audiobooks are a little abrupt. But this kinda helps, they've added special effects so when Diane and animals speak mind to mind, or its Diane's internal thoughts, they add an echo. Also worth mentioning I've been reading and rereading this series since I was 15 so my comment has a series spoiler not in this first book.
(view spoiler)[ Diane is such a sassy sweetheart, but sometimes I think she’s being really naive. Like thinking the fact she talks to animals isn’t special, it’s just a “knack for animals”. Come on, girl. Then I remember she’s 13.... Me personally at 13 I would have grabbed on to any sign I was special haha, but Diane at this point in her life has a major inferiority complex. It's sad how she's always like "oh, these famous legends will forget all about me, the king and queen can't possibly care about me" and I'm like girl you are the *major series spoiler* the daughter of an actual freaking GOD. Diane is definitely a teenager. So sassy and reckless. She becoming quite powerful with her wild magic now, and it's making her grow up more. But I have a weird fondness for the part where Diane accidentally stops her own heart to talk to dolphins... The way Numair gets so angry is really sweet haha (hide spoiler)]
