Laura | 1168 comments Hey team! So, I've had a bit of a rocky week. Last Thursday my 17 year old ran away (we got her back unharmed). She had been telling some lies at work, and Child Protective Services was called. So we've been dealing with the emotions from that. They finally came out this morning, and it seems like everything is settled (mostly). Still need to get my daughter into some counseling, but we're working on that.

All that to preface that I haven't gotten my books read. I'm 2 behind, and this week's call will be 3. Touch of Power is next up for me. I am prioritizing this challenge, and will be caught up by next week's call. Thank you for your patience!

Laura | 1168 comments P. S. Someone please poke me if we get a winning call or something happens so that I need to read fast! I may not be paying as much attention as usual. :)

Sandra | 25911 comments Natalie, you've mentioned shifters in your review for necromancers, probably a copy/paste but you'll need to fix it :)

Very sorry to hear that Laura, family is the best and the worst. Hope everyone close to you are coping with this and it all ends well.

Well it'll be a good call for next week as it would be a winning call for us! So pick your UF books and look for an assassin one just in case.

I'm not sure what I will read, but it should be easy to find. I'm about halfway through my Hunter book.

And my necromancer review is fixed. Thanks for catching that!

Don't forget you need to have read & reviewed all books not just the shelves in the bingo line, to win.

Week 7 - Necromancer

Book: Touch of Power (Healer, #1) by Maria V. Snyder
Tagged 7 times as Necromancer
Date Read: 5/3
Rating: 5 stars
Pages: 390

Review:
I loved this book! And I should have known I would have. I loved the Study Series, as well. So I don't know why I waited so long to read this one. Avry was a wonderful heroine. She had the attitude I expect from a Snyder heroine. And she didn't just roll over when the hero was a jerk. And I loved seeing Kerrick change as Avry affected him.

message 321: by Natalie (new)

Natalie | 549 comments Stamp is requested. I'm glad you enjoyed the book, it was my first Maria V. Snyder book :)

I was planning to read Magic Study for assassins so I can finally get back to that series, but I just noticed it is also tagged urban fantasy so I may get to that next :)

message 322: by Laura (new)

Laura | 1168 comments Really? UF? People amaze me with their tags. I read a book of fairy tales recently that was tagged nonfiction!

I never question it when it works in my favor :)

Urban fantasy technically can any fantasy set in a city, not necessarily a modern city. I think this takes places in another palace type city right? I'm trying to remember how poison study ended.

Sandra | 25911 comments Dark Queen (Jane Yellowrock, #12) by Faith Hunter
Shelf: Urban Fantasy
Date: 5/5/18
Rating: ★★★★★

Finally, the big Duel between the European Vamps & the American Vamps is here.

Lots and lots of emotions in this one. Jane gets some of her earlier memories back when a Man purporting to be her brother who is also the new local PSYLed honcho, meets her to request a meet with Leo regarding the Duel.

Jane has been having problems with time slipping and is worried it might affect her part in the Duel; lots of traitorous vamps & witches prior to the Duel trying to off her or Bruiser so that it will change the outcome.

Leo calls a Gather of the vamps & Yellowrock Security and stuns most of the vamps when he declares Jane Yellowrock, Blood Master of Clan Yellowrock. At this same event various plans come together for Leo as he gifts various Cities to some well known Vamps so they will have his back in the Duel.

The Duel is not just between Leo & Emperor Titus but between various members of each faction. (view spoiler) Sabina, the Outclan Priestess & the 3 Onorios, Bruiser, Brandon & Brian are the arbiters & judge of the Duel and therefore cannot fight.

This book is the absolute best one I've read of the sheer terror of not knowing who is going to make it through the duelling. We've come to love these characters and can feel Jane's emotions as each bout takes place. Her despair and desperation leap off the page, and not even Beast's assertion that she is Best Ambush Hunter can comfort her.

This is not a quick & dirty action scene, it goes for days and of course as always there are plans within plans and traitors and enemies everywhere.

So looking forward to the next book, I've got to know what happens next!!

Sandra | 25911 comments Magic Hunter (The Vampire's Mage Series, #1) by C.N. Crawford
Shelf: Hunter
Date: 6/5/18
Rating: ★★★

Rosalind is a novice Demon Hunter working for the Brotherhood. They abhor magic and supernatural beings and are turning into a death cult. Kill first and don't bother with questions later. Rosalind is having a hard time actually killing the demons as some of them look so human.

Caine, a mage, saves her from a demon attack that goes wrong and tells her to run as the Brotherhood knows what she really is. Which is more than Rosalind knows. She's so naive, and has TSTL moments but at least acknowledges how stupid she is after some of them. Doesn't stop her doing stupid things again though.

Caine keeps saving her and they bicker continuously and at one point accuses her "whose defining characteristic is chronic wrongness, mixed with a staggering dose of condescension." And he's not wrong.

I can see where these stories will improve and no doubt I'll pick up the next one.

Week 9: Urban Fantasy

Book: Karma Girl (Bigtime, #1) by Jennifer Estep
MPG UF - 70 tags
Date Read: 5/6
Rating: 4 stars

Review: This book was so much fun to read! It took every superhero cliche ever used and totally made fun of them. For starters, everyone has an alliterative name. It took me a few chapters to realize that it was everyone, not just the Main characters. I have read other Jennifer Estep books, in both the Elemental Assassins and Mythos Academy series. But this one is her first published book. And is very different from the others. It was nice to see this humorous side of her writing.

Week 8: Hunter
Book: The Ruins of Gorlan (Ranger's Apprentice, #1) by John Flanagan
Tagged Hunter 2 times
Date Read: 5/7
Rating: 3.5 stars

Review: This was an enjoyable book. The story was engaging, and the world was fun, if not unique. It could have been a sweeping, epic fantasy, had the author chosen to go that direction. It lacked the punch of Tolkien, or even Rowling, but it would certainly appeal to the target middle grade/YA audience (more on the Y side than the A side, though). Overall, I'm glad I read it, I'll try to convince my kids to read it, and I'll most likely pick up the next one at some point in the future.

Chaos Choreography (InCryptid, #5) by Seanan McGuire

Review

I had read the two first books in this series and I had enjoyed them, but the change of MC backed me a bit of it. This challenge, however, and being back to the original MC, has brought me again to it and I've enjoyed it deeply. It's still one of the funniest series for me (Aeslin, Malena....) and I like a lot the development of the relationship between Verity/Valerie and Dom.

It has brought me back to all the short stories, so I'm very glad to have found it again.

message 346: by Sandra, Kindle Operator Licence Required (new)

Laura | 1168 comments Really? The Twilight books are on that list, but the Chief Inspector Armand Gamache books aren't?

message 349: by Laura (new)

Laura | 1168 comments I thought the rules said that re-reads aren't preferred, but are allowed on a limited basis. But did I see somewhere that it is actually limited to only 1 re-read per person?

message 350: by Laura (new)

Laura | 1168 comments If I can do a second re-read, it will be Shadow of Night (All Souls Trilogy, #2) by Deborah Harkness . Otherwise, I'll be reading Croak (Croak, #1) by Gina Damico .
