Lance’s father’s car surfaces after 23 years not knowing what happened to him. It turns out the remains found in the car is a woman who went missing about the same time. Through the investigation Lance is trying to figure out what happened while people are starting to die who have information about that time. Even though Lance is hoping his father is not the killer, he has come to realize that his father may be responsible for everything. When Lance and Morgan got too close, the real killer finds them and abuses his authority in order to detain them. This book has a lot of suspense and questions that the author does a good job at not giving answers until she wants the reader to have them. At the end of the book Lance is able to get closure with what actually happened to his father and ready to start living his life and looking to the future.

Review: Four books in and I'm still not sold on Harry. The adventure and the side characters are what keeps me coming back. There is a ton of stuff going on in this installment. Harry is facing trouble on all sides, so it was pretty fast-paced. The best things about this book were 1) Murphy kicking butt chainsaw style and 2) the evil unicorn. Yes, EVIL UNICORN.

Dead Until Dark
Rating: ★★★★
Completed: 4/02
Final Thoughts:
Sookie came across more like a 12 year old girl rather than a grown ass woman. Very annoying. But I really enjoyed the story as a whole and look forward to more

Ora (oeamis) Melissa are you reading or listening to the books? I found that I prefer listening to James Mardsten. I love his voice.

Krissy I enjoyed most of the books in the series. It’s definitely better than the HBO series after the writers went off in their own direction.

Krissy (krissystewart) I LOVE the Dresden audiobooks!

I haven't watched True Blood yet. I planned to once I got a little further into the series

Ora (oeamis) There are things little things that the writers changed in the HBO series. Each season it's a bit more. After season 4, they don't follow the books at all.
I am Team Eric, so book 4 is my favorite. I reread that book so many times that the book fell apart.

Melissa Davis | 790 comments Re: Dresden - I totally agree about James Marsters; he makes the audiobook super enjoyable. ♥♥♥ My problem w/ The Dresden Files is really Harry himself. I tend to love books with unlikable characters but I don't think Jim Butcher intended for him to be unlikable. I think that's why I have such mixed feelings about him. My impression is that to Harry, women are essentially useless unless he needs someone to ogle, be the big bad, or be the damsel in distress. Also, he has some narcissistic tendencies that are a big turn off for me.

However, I do feel like book 4 showed some character growth for him and we do get that scene where Murphy saves his butt so, I don't think all hope is lost. I do have to say, that so far, Michael is my favorite side character and I was disappointed that he didn't make an appearance in this fae-heavy book considering that the fae have his sword ... and, I really liked Listens to Wind, too! I hope we see more of him!

Re: Sookie - I loved the books! The only complaint I have is that you kind of have to track down all the little short stories in between books to really get a full picture what's going on book-to-book. I read the series pre-Goodreads so I didn't realize that there were minis in between and I can remember thinking "what did I miss?" more than once.

I can definitely see what you mean about Sookie, though ... she is very naive and sheltered for someone who can hear every perverse thought that crosses people's minds ... that is kind of unbelievable, the good news is that she does do a lot of growing up throughout the series.

I love Eric ♥♥♥ but Quinn is a close second for me!

message 161: by Ora (new)

Ora (oeamis) No I haven't. I have to say I was REALLY upset with the last couple of books Sookie Stackhouse and haven't read anything else by the author.
If Quinn is in the Midnight TX I will definitely read it. Do you watch the series? Is he in it?

message 162: by Melissa (new)

Melissa Davis | 790 comments Krissy, I don't think he shows up until bk 6 but meeeoooow!

Ora, I haven't seen the tv show. I've heard that it's quite different from the books. There are only three books in the series though and I think Quinn makes an appearance in bk 2 but he has a more hefty role in bk 3 if I remember correctly. The entire story is full of characters from her other series but you don't have to know about them beforehand to enjoy it.

I've read a fair amount of CH's stuff ... Harper Connolly was another one of my favorites - until the romantic twist @ the end ... that kind of ruined it for me but a lot of people said that they saw it coming and it didn't bother them. I was totally blindsided though, so I quit CH for a long time. Harper is a super interesting character - she was struck by lightning and can now sense dead bodies. It gets her into a lot of crazy situations.

Author: Seanan McGuire

REVIEW:
So this is a new series for me, and one I can't believe I haven't picked up before now. It's got everything that I adore in a book: a kick-ass heroine, a hopping plot that moves the story along, a great variety of characters, and plenty of snark. LOL
The kick-ass heroine, or Toby as she's known in the series, is fantastic. She starts out as this gung-ho PI who's out to save the day, when something totally horrible happens to her and changes her forever. The real story starts 14 years later when her frenemy is murdered and curses her to find out by who and why. Toby's adventures after that introduce a whole slew of great characters that I can't wait to get to know better in the rest of the books.

Well I certainly feel like I've been missing out-I haven't read any of Charlaine Harris' books. I have seen True Blood a couple times on HBO though, and have been thinking about starting the series from the beginning. As for Harry, I haven't listened to the audiobooks, but it sounds like it's definitely worth the time. I've got several credits available on my Audiobooks account so I'm gonna go ahead and pick one up now.

Melissa Davis | 790 comments Alicia, I hope you enjoy the Harry audio ... too bad he doesn't use Spike's accent but he still does a good job!

I loved the Sookie books. I read them at the beginning of my PNR/UF obsession so I really wasn't disappointed by the end of the series. I know that a lot of people were upset and even threatened CH & her family's lives so she's vowed to never visit that world again. On one hand that's totally crazy that people reacted like that to a book series. On the other hand, people were totally devoted to that universe, which is something really special. It's so strange how books can draw us in and make it feel like it's our own, like it belongs to us. And to think that like all books, it's really just a combination of the same 26 alphabetic characters ... totally blows my mind.

Sandra | 25912 comments I was astounded at the ending myself, but I wasn't as invested as some of the people who read them as they came out. I voiced my disappointment by giving fewer stars in my ratings, though I'd only gone as high as 4 when at the peak. LOL.

message 167: by AliciaJ (new)

AliciaJ | 781 comments Wow, sounds like a lot of drama. Kinda turns me off the whole thing to be honest. I understand that people get invested, but at the end of the day, it's a fictional universe with fictional characters. There's just no sense in getting all bent because an author's vision doesn't fit what we want for those characters IMO. I guess that's where fanfic comes in, yeah? That's a good way to fix it and make things the way *we* want them! LOL ;)

Melissa Davis | 790 comments When I read Sookie, I was in a YA black hole. My baby sister is 13 years younger than me and sometimes it's hard to find things in common. Fortunately, we both love to read so I was reading anything that I thought she would enjoy. I didn't know how starved I was for an adult storyline until I picked up Dead Before Dark. There really wasn't anything at the time that would have convinced me that Sookie wasn't exactly what I was searching for. From there, I found Rachel Vincent's Shifter series, Anita Blake, The Dark Hunters, KMM's Highlanders & Fever series, BDB ... Sookie was really my gateway to PNR/UF.

Just started re-reading Dead Before Dark. Hoping that it's as good as I remember.

This is my one reread for bingo. It’s been four years since I read this book. Other than remembering that Nick was pulled into another dimension/alternate universe I really didn’t remember too much of the book. His father died and now he needs to complete a ritual to receive the rest of the Malachi powers. Everyone wants him dead. He is split so he would be weak and easy to kill. I can’t blame Nick freaking out when he realized that he is not in his world and assume he should be able to trust the same people in his world and then realize they are evil. I forgot all about Kody’s sacrifice for Nick to get back to his dimension. I wasn’t surprised that Nick was expanding is family/friends circle with is not locking up his generals and letting them stay. I do love that Xev and Zavid are new additions. I have found I am a little frustrated with this series more so that I wish SK would hurry up and finish the so Nick could get his book. I know there are people who think they know who he will end up with. I personally think it will be someone that hasn’t had a huge role in DK world or a new character. At least that seems to be SK’s MO with other books so I don’t know why she would change it. At least I hope so. I have been trying to remember which Devereaux sister died that Nick was supposed to marry. Who knows maybe she won’t die with Nick changing things and get the future Ash saw for him.

Melissa Davis | 790 comments Holy moly, I have too many choices for this category!

Sophia & I started reading Invision like two weeks ago. She fell asleep almost immediately after practice, then we put it off to read The Cruel Prince and Matilda. So, I know we are going to have to start over.

Then I found that two wonderful people shelved High Voltage as "Demons" and I've been dying to start that. (Apparently, I'm not the only one who interprets The Nine as demon-like creatures???)

I also have The Devil You Know, Red-Headed Stepchild, and Lucifer's Daughter already checked out from the library ...

Decisions, decisions ...

Things are pretty wrapped up by the end of the book. I'm a little worried that this is the end and I really hope we get to see more! I've always wanted to know more about The NINE, I really want to know what happens to Daegus - he's my favorite highlander! I really want Sean to conquer his demons. Review: Well this was certainly an adventure. My very first Anne Bishop book, and it was intense. I figured it would be a bit dark, simply because of the category. I don't picture sweet and fluffy when I think of demons, but jeez. This one was *really* dark, at least for me. By the end, I was so wrung out I was just glad I made it through. I will probably read another one by this author, I'm just not sure it will be a part of this series. While the characters were amazing and the story was powerful, I think it's one of those I'll have to be in a specific frame of mind to enjoy.
