Perri | -43 comments Thanks for tipping the scale, Agnieszka.

I have the Assassin's books in my TBR pile, the length as always intimidated me. I need to take a deep breath and dive in

message 152: by Amber (last edited May 22, 2018 10:17AM) (new)

Amber Martingale Unless there are more votes by Friday, I will be reading The Earth Dragon Awakes: The San Francisco Earthquake of 1906, The Year 1000: What Life Was Like at the Turn of the First Millennium and The Birth of Satan: Tracing the Devil's Biblical Roots in June...provided, of course, that I can actually find these books in my library's database.

Patricia Bergman (marshop) | 1229 comments I just finished watching the Great American Read on PBS tonight. I can highly recommend it. I hope you all can find a repeat of the episode. It discusses author bios as well of the 100 books selected as the favorites. I loved it. Now I am suppose to vote on my favorite book from their list - or add a book.

I just had a quick look at the list, Patricia. It's really fabulous.

(And I was so pleased to see The Book Thief right on the first page - one of my all time favourites)

Ann Girdharry (anngirdharry) | 313 comments I'm really ahead of myself on my June books but The Retreat The Retreat by Mark Edwards by Mark Edwards was so well written I could hardly put it down.

Here's a link to my review.

I see that they are streaming parts of last night's episode so you can watch it. I had a hard time leaving the TV during the 2 hours (except for bathroom breaks)..

message 158: by Vicki Willis (new)

Vicki Willis That show sounds interesting. I had heard a little about it and was curious, but never followed through. I am going to check it out.

@Ann I am so glad you enjoyed The Retreat. I thought it was great too. When I saw it on your list, I thought you would like it, especially being about to relate to other authors.

I loved it too. I was folding laundry and stumbled across the show. Perhaps it’s common knowledge but I didn’t know that The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton was written by a teen girl. Amazing! I’m not a Fifty Shades of Grey (Fifty Shades, #1) by E.L. James or Twilight (Twilight, #1) by Stephenie Meyer fan but I enjoyed the diversity of the list. The programme really got you thinking and reminiscing.

Ann Girdharry (anngirdharry) | 313 comments Vicki said 'I am so glad you enjoyed The Retreat...'

Yes, it was a great pick.

(Though I don't think I'd ever hole myself up with a bunch of other writers in the middle of nowhere - that would just be asking for trouble :) )

message 161: by Mandy (new)

Mandy (penn_y_lane) | 547 comments I have two with 4 votes each - I may try to read both but after starting a new job 2 weeks ago I have much less time to read (boo) and so we'll see.

Will try and catch up with all the posts here later

message 162: by Christine (new)

Christine Hatfield (christinesbookshelves) | 5526 comments Mandy where is your new job at?

message 163: by Patricia (new)

Patricia Bergman (marshop) | 1229 comments The Great American Read is going to repeat Saturday twice on PBS. I will probably watch it again - it was that good.

message 164: by Dana (new)

Dana (dkmckelvey) | 623 comments Congrats on the new job Mandy

I didn't know that Melanie... that's pretty cool! I don't even remember learning that when it was required reading in grade 7-ish? I still love The Outsiders.

It's worth it, Perri (in my humble opinion). Robin Hobb is a fantastic storyteller.

Congratulations on the new job, Mandy. What are you doing now?

Also, I have a tie between Her Final Breath and The Music of the Deep, would someone mind breaking it for me please?

message 166: by Christine (new)

Christine Hatfield (christinesbookshelves) | 5526 comments Sophie I think you should read Her Final Breath

message 167: by Ann (new)

Ann Girdharry (anngirdharry) | 313 comments Sophie said, 'Also, I have a tie ...'

They both look good!

To make it simple, I'll vote for Her Final Breath because I've had Dugoni on my list for a long time.
Happy Reading.

Perri | -43 comments Noooo, Music of the Deep ;)

message 169: by Christine (new)

message 170: by Patricia (last edited May 27, 2018 10:26AM) (new)

Patricia Bergman (marshop) | 1229 comments It appears that Lightning Men Lightning Men (Darktown, #2) by Thomas Mullen has won. I have started reading it and will probably also read one of my second place winners .

message 171: by Christine (new)

Christine Hatfield (christinesbookshelves) | 5526 comments I never read that book

Perri | -43 comments Christine wrote: "Why that book Perri?"

It takes place in my neck of the woods and I want to read it too! :)

message 173: by Patricia (new)

Patricia Bergman (marshop) | 1229 comments I just checked the listing on PBS for Saturday and the info I was given was wrong. I do not see The Great American Read at all. If you are interested go to facebook and like their page and join the discussion. There are some clips of the original show.

message 174: by Patricia (new)

Patricia Bergman (marshop) | 1229 comments I just found the entire show on PBS.org. Those of you interested, be sure to check it out.

Hahaha well I'm going to bask on a beach near Barcelona from 30th June and will need lots to read so if anything I will make a point to read The Music of the Deep during the first week of July if anyone fancies a buddy read?

message 178: by Christine (new)

Christine Hatfield (christinesbookshelves) | 5526 comments I don’t have that book so I can’t read that book for a buddy read

I requested my library buy it, so if it works I'm in! Didn't you go to Barcelona last year? Jealous!

message 180: by Amber (new)

Amber Martingale My three books for June arrived today, so I'll start on them today.

message 181: by Christine (new)

Christine Hatfield (christinesbookshelves) | 5526 comments Which books Amber?

message 182: by Amber (last edited Jun 05, 2018 11:27AM) (new)

Amber Martingale The Birth of Satan: Tracing the Devil's Biblical Roots, The Earth Dragon Awakens: The Great San Francisco Earthquake of 1906 and The Year 1000: What Life Was Like at the Turn of the First Millennium: An Englishman's World, Christine.

You were the only one to vote for The Incredible Shrinking Son of Man: How Reliable is the Gospel Tradition? this month so it didn't even make third place.

message 183: by Christine (new)

Christine Hatfield (christinesbookshelves) | 5526 comments Aww that stinks Amber

message 184: by Amber (last edited May 31, 2018 12:11PM) (new)

Amber Martingale True, but what stinks even more is that the font in The Birth of Satan was almost too small for me to read. Plus, I couldn't make heads or tails of the Introduction, so I didn't even bother reading the first chapter.

As for the second book, The Earth Dragon Awakens, I've already finished it.

So all I have left is The Year 1000.

message 185: by Christine (new)

Christine Hatfield (christinesbookshelves) | 5526 comments Oh I wouldn’t like that at all and I finished my 67th book today

message 186: by Amber (new)

Amber Martingale LOL.

message 187: by Christine (new)

Christine Hatfield (christinesbookshelves) | 5526 comments I like reading books that have big words and I knew you would laugh about me finishing my 67th book lol

message 188: by Amber (new)

Amber Martingale At least you've read 66 books more than Agent Orange has probably read his entire life...except when he was in school.

message 189: by Christine (new)

By the Way, Watchers is on the list of 100 best books of the Great American Read.
