I added a note to the top of all 2019 tabs!

All current tabs will be deleted/modified on November 30th to reflect the 2019 challenge beginning. I will be deleting the Plans and Recommendations tabs, and I'll be deleting all member info from the Rejects tab.

I'll also open the 2019 progress tabs then.

I just want to make sure it is all cleaned up before we move into the new year (so that we aren't having to dig through a bunch of tabs to get to the 2019 one), especially now that there are threads available to all members on here for those things (Rejects folder, 2019 Plans, 2019 Weekly threads).

I'll probably keep the 2018 and 2018 Rejects tabs available until we begin the list planning process for 2020 and I need to make room for those tabs.

Also, per some people's request, I've divided the 2019 tabs from A-M and N-Z based on whichever name you use to create your column. The numbers and statistics will calculate both tabs together (as in, if we have 5 people on the first tab and 3 on the other, our total members participating will say 8 on both tabs). Hopefully that will make it easier to quickly find your column to update your info!

Please let me know if you have any suggestions or requests!

I literally just click buttons until it does what I want it to do 😂 Google and YouTube are my friends.

The great thing about Excel and Google Sheets is that... if you can dream of it doing something for you, it probably will. You just have to figure out how to make it do what you want it to do haha!

Also, my husband is a CPA and an Excel wizard, so if I'm really stumped, he usually knows the answer.

I think the hardest thing is getting the hang of the formulas. I took a quick class last winter but I don't remember all of it. I saved my notes but I should definitely start practicing by making my own challenge spreadsheet. It would be a useful skill for a resume.

Google is the reason I know most of my more "complex" Excel/Sheets functions! I've been all about conditional formatting for the last couple of years, plus having sheets communicate with one another.

Liz | 516 comments You people amaze me with your skills. I would love to take a class, but I'll just keep playing around until then. :)

Same here Liz. I am in awe of people who are so good with it and I really should make an effort but since I have people at work (and here!) who are so much better, I take the lazy way out and "borrow" their skills.

Emily, I agree with the clean up. Could you save the recommendations 2019 tab somewhere we can access it (and perhaps add to it in 2019). While I will likely get ideas from what people are reading in 2019, having a handy list of recommendations which presumably are books people rated highly would also be valuable.

Thanks for all your work on this.

I will just hide the page, so you can still access it as you wish by going to View --> Hidden Sheets. I do think the threads will be a more valuable resource for finding recommendations, only because people haven't really contributed to the recommendations tab much.

Wouldn’t it be fun to know which books were the most read by the group?

There is a way but I remember it being kind of convoluted. It’s an index function if I recall correctly. I tried it in the spring to see if I could make a function that tells me the most common choice for each prompt. I remember I gave up. I can’t remember if that’s because I couldn’t get it to work, or if I just realized it wasn’t worth the effort.

One of the minor issues with it is consistency of cataloging. So if I label mine Title by Author and you label yours Title - Author, they’ll count as two separate results.

I feel like there is a way also but no idea how or where my class notes are. I think somehow you can add a formula into the columns so that you can graph it out separately and make either a pie chart or a numbered column graph. Excel is just so complicated for me. I let you guys do all the hard work.

Bahaha! I agree with Steve -- it's doable, but the difference in formatting will make it produce a million different things.

Steve | 615 comments Don’t forget everyone that the 2019 tabs Emily just unlocked are for filling in the books you read DURING the 2019 challenge. They’re not for filling in all your PLANNED books. (You can link a plan at the bottom, though).

Jill | 725 comments That is what I get for taking a couple of days off for Thanksgiving! But I got the “W” column which is what my last name starts with, so not too bad a location.

message 224: by Steve (new)

Steve | 615 comments The spreadsheet got renamed at some point in the last day or two to "2019 updated reference ATY Member Reads Community Spreadsheet". Is there a reason for that? I think it should remain without the "2019 updated reference" since it's still our 2018 sheet, too...

Whoops! I didn't notice that... and I didn't make the change. Just fixed it back. My guess is that someone added it to their drive and changed it for their reference without realizing it would change everyone's.

That makes sense! Thanks for the fix.

Also, I updated the N-Z sheet with this, but it looks like the A-M sheet has protected cells in columns C/D. Could you add =counta(E4:DJ4,'2019 (N-Z)'!E4:DJ4) as a formula in C4 and then fill down? Right now, the formula in the sheet is counting the totals of each tab independently, but then finding the average of that prompt by dividing the tab's count by the total number of members. So if 100% of the 37 people between the two tabs complete a prompt, but there's only 12 people on the N-Z tab, the average is going to display on tab N-Z as 32%, even though 100% of us have read it.

the formula I added to N-Z is going to count how many people A-Z read the book and show us what percentage of everyone A-Z has read the prompt.

Unless we don't want that.... in which case we'll need to remove the total count of members from the top of each sheet and replace with that tab's count.

message 227: by Emily, Conterminous Mod (new)

Emily Bourque (emilyardoin) | 11184 comments Mod
Whoops! Yes, fixed it! I added protected cells to minimize the chances of people accidently changing things... I'm going to go do protected cells for the N-Z tab. But thank you for pointing this out Steve! That's what I intended to do.

I noticed the multi-week rejects don't have multiple rows. Do we just put all the books we read for them in one cell?

I'd mentioned this in August, and I'm seeing it again now... "A Women's Prize for Fiction winner or nominee" is still our second-to-last category behind a book that intimidates/scares you. I wouldn't have guessed that would be such a low-read category. There are plenty of popular books on that list, so it's not like it's only "obscure" works to choose from.
