Lynn | 2974 comments Hello Team!

I'm really looking forward to this toppler and off to gopher books right now! This one does mean quite a bit of recording to make sure as a team we fill each category and don't double up.
I'm pretty good with spreadsheets, so I'm happy to volunteer to coordinate .... but if someone else really wants to do it I'm happy to sit back and just participate.

I would suggest to get started that everyone:
1. List ALL the categories that you could potentially read a book for (even if it's more than you can read in a week)
2. How many books you can read in the week.
(That way we can work out how to fill the bingo cards and not double up)

3. Post your team name suggestions :)

Right, off to gopher :)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Thanks for getting us organized Lynn!

It's bed time here but I'll check in first thing tomorrow to do some gophering and see which tasks I could do.

I tried wrapping my head around making a spreadsheet for this, so I'd be very happy if you could do that!

I'll try to dream up a cool name for us tonight :D

message 3: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments We should probably focus on the first card first. We only get points for the second card when the first one is fully completed, and Kristie mentioned in the main thread that based on what people said they would read, groups should be able to finish Card 1 and a few tasks of Card 2. I think reaching the 3rd card is very ambitious, and we should perhaps start assigning people to those tasks only when we're very close to finishing the second card.

Really off to bed now, goodnight!

message 4: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Hi Lynn and Peggy. Thanks for the team thread, Lynn and doing the spread sheet stuff! I have been gophering already.

I can read a book for any category, and I already have titles for most. The only ones I have no title for yet is the beach umbrella and MC has a job you'd like.

I can probably read three books for sure, maybe more, depending on category and length. I have a "V" book I would like to get rid of, so I can read this for sure, please?

Team name "I love bingo and books!"

message 5: by Lynn (new)

Lynn | 2974 comments Thanks Cherie, noted and I've put you down for the V book :)

message 6: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Thanks, Lynn. I have spent the last hour looking for a book with a beach umbrella on the cover. I finally found one. ;o)

message 7: by Lara (new)

Lara | 1426 comments Hi Everyone. I can also probably read more than I stated, and have books in most categories. I'll spend a bit of time this weekend gophering for quicker reads so I have a selection based on what will be helpful.

As for team name, there's the saying "There's no 'I' in team", but I don't know that it would make a good name.

There are also words, like idle, idyllic, and idol that seem like they could become something fun, but my brain isn't having it right now.

message 8: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Lynn -- Since you already put me down for V, I will be reading Valkyrie Rising.
I even found a "job" book.

Lara - that is great "There is no I in team"!

siriusedward (elenaraphael) | 887 comments Hi Lynn.
Am here.
Thanks fir setting up the thread.

From card one I can read book on Romance/Vampire Werewolf/male or female author

message 10: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I love "There's no I in team"!

message 11: by Peggy (last edited Feb 03, 2018 12:16AM) (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I can read 2 books, if they're short. I had about 5 in mind that are short enough to enable me to read 2, and they fit the following tasks:

Card 1
Animal on Cover
First book in a series
MC has a job you'd like to have
Young adult
Books made into movies
One word title
Female author
Male author
Author's name begins with "F"

Maybe also (might need a ruling):
Proper name in title - Howl's Moving Castle - Howl is a wizard in the book, but it's not a regular name like Jane. Not sure if it counts
Horror - A Monster Calls - I don't normally read horror, and I don't think this book is horror, but it is shelved 1100 times as horror on the main book page

message 12: by Peggy (last edited Feb 03, 2018 12:18AM) (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Card 2
Standalone
MC has special powers
Witches or wizards
Set in the United States
Food on the cover
Set in England
Family relationship in title (e.g. daughter)

Possibly:
Mystery or Thriller (if cozy mystery counts)
Person with a hat on the cover (is this a hat or do you call it something different? She's definitely wearing something on her head: My Grandmother Sends Her Regards and Apologises

I could probably find books for several other tasks too, but then I might only be able to read 1.

message 13: by Peggy (last edited Feb 03, 2018 03:03AM) (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I made a quick overview of the number of books people indicated they could read when signing up, just so that we have an idea how far we are likely to get:

Lara 5
Lynn 4
Annerlee 3-4
siriusedward 3
Naomi 2-3
Cherie 2-3
Peggy 2
Anna 1-3
Mikaleigh 2-3

Total: 24-30

So we should be able to do Card 1, but probably not that much of Card 2.

Is it a good idea to assign everyone to the minimum amount of books they have indicated on card 1, so that we have 24 out of 25 tasks for Card 1 filled up for sure? If we leave the 'free space' open we can always slot a book in there to complete the card, I think usually there are some people who read more than they first thought.

Then for the second card, we can see if we can get one full row or column done for extra bonus points.

But that is so true. I can't believe I never realized that. I still like it for our team name though!

Hi siriusedward - Does that mean you can read 2 books and they would be Romance and Vampire etc
or you can read one book and it can be either Romance or Vampire etc

I think it's the former but just want to double check.

RE Monster Calls, well it says on the rules "- For genres, the genre should be listed on the book's main page."
So for me that qualifies

Lynn | 2974 comments Updated to here.

The first post at the top of the thread now has a link to the General challenge thread and the team spreadsheet that I've put together.

Please do check that I've got the details correct for you.

message 20: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Looks great Lynn!

One minor correction: you have me with coming-of-age, but I don't have a book for that.

message 21: by Lynn (new)

Lynn | 2974 comments Thanks Peggy, now corrected

message 27: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I thought proper name referred to people's names only. Does anyone know if place names (like Molokai) also count?

message 28: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments By the way, I'm down for 2 books, but some tasks may not combine for me. For example, 'author's name starts with F' and 'MC has job you'd like to have' are for the same book.

Should I make a list if this so that it can be taken into account, or will that become too complicated?

message 29: by Lynn (new)

Lynn | 2974 comments Peggy wrote: "I thought proper name referred to people's names only. Does anyone know if place names (like Molokai) also count?"

Oooohhh I didn't actually look at the book, I thought it was someone's name.
You are right, it's about a person not a place.

Yeah, I need to know that

message 31: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I'll let you know tomorrow.

Yeah, I read it a few years ago and recognized it. Thought I'd mention it before we slot it in and it's disqualified afterwards.

I will see if there are more category I can include

siriusedward (elenaraphael) | 887 comments The blank space or free space maybe?

message 35: by Lynn (new)

Lynn | 2974 comments Having the two for the moment is fine ..... this is just a starting point, if you finish your 2 books quickly and ready to start a 3rd book then we'll look at what needs doing :)

message 36: by siriusedward (new)

siriusedward (elenaraphael) | 887 comments Ok then

Romance: Dreams: Part Two or

PNR : Slave to Sensation

message 37: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Looks good for me Lynn. I was at the Mall today and stopped in at Powell' Books. I bought A Tree Grows in Brooklyn which will fit for coming of age, YA - I think, and female author. It is a little longer than I would like it to be for a toppler. I also bought A Wrinkle in Time which definitely fits female author and first-in-series. Not a movie yet, but they are working on it. I also purchased Uprooted. It fits one word title, female author, there is a hawk on the cover, for animal. Might be YA, but I haven't looked. A little long for a toppler book.

To start, I will read Valkyrie Rising and then see what is open for the next book.

message 38: by Vicki (new)

Vicki | 1538 comments Peggy wrote: "I thought proper name referred to people's names only. Does anyone know if place names (like Molokai) also count?"

I haven't read anywhere that's it's people only. I can ask Kirstie but I don't think I will read that one anyways. I could also use Where'd you go Bernadette for proper name which I hadn't thought of earlier somehow.

message 40: by Annerlee (last edited Feb 03, 2018 10:36PM) (new)

Annerlee | 2871 comments Hello team. This is me just checking in to the thread.
I'm currently away from home, so don't have access to most of my books until Tuesday. Will start gophering then. I' m happy to try and pick up categories not currently covered.

I start a new job on Thursday, so I may not read as much as I'd like for the toppler. I'll manage 3 though.

message 41: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Exciting Annerlee! What's your new job?

Good luck with the first day back at work Mikaleigh!

@Vicki: I think in previous challenges etc it was people's name, but it's a good idea to check with Kristie.

message 42: by Lynn (new)

Lynn | 2974 comments Just a quick message that I'm out all day today .... so I'll be updating once I get back tonight :)

message 43: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments For Card 1, I can't combine the following tasks:

- First book in a series AND books made into movies AND proper name in title (all three only work for Howl's Moving Castle)
- MC has a job you'd like to have AND author's name starts with F (both tasks only work for Cherry Cheesecake Murder)

If I read Howl's Moving Castle for Card 1, I can't do the Witches or Wizards task for Card 2.

If I read Cherry Cheesecake Murder for Card 1, I can't do Set in the US or Food on Cover for card 2.

The other books I had in mind to choose from for the toppler are
Edgedancer
My Grandmother Sends Her Regards and Apologises
A Monster Calls

message 44: by Anna (last edited Feb 04, 2018 02:55PM) (new)

Anna Kļaviņa (annamatsuyama) | 1355 comments Just checking in

eta I believe I could manage 2 books.

Proper name in title Happy Birthday, Wanda June * definitely reading

my 2nd book could be one of these
Epistolary style book The Nun * most likely
Horror At the Mountains of Madness

I'll be lecturing at the local college 2 days a week (Thurs and Fri) for the next 5 months - foundations in computing programing, webdesign, multimedia etc. It's a secondment, so I'll be working the other 3 days at my normal job (training dept admin).

I've been trying to move out of my admin job for years, so it's really exciting, but terrifying at the same time.
