Janette | 211 comments I quite like the Mallorean books especially Guardians of the west which has some funny moments. My problem with Eddings is that he only has a few characters. They are brilliant but they appear in all of his books under different names. Whatever you read first is great but then the others are all a bit repetitive. None of which stops The Belgariad don being a great read though😀

Thanks Jim. I'll keep that in mind next year when all I'll be doing is the series challenge.

I believe I would like Solomon Kane. I'm interested to see what you think.

I've read them before and they're well worth checking out -- especially because you can always find at least a few free stories if you want to just dip your toes in.

Since my last message, I finished:
- Blood Rites: a very good addition to the Dresden Files.
- La Belle Sauvage: re-discorvering my childhood with this prequel to the Dark Materials trilogy. Baby Lyra is adorable :p
- The Edge Chronicles 2: The Winter Knights: Second Book of Quint: I didn't remember this book was that creepy :o
- A Darker Shade of Magic: not a bad read but the book is definitively overhyped IMO

Reading An Echo of Things to Come (had to restart with the ebook 'cause the pronunciation of the names confused me...) and Hollow World in audiobook.

message 60: by Jason (new)

Jason | 131 comments Finished The Caldera. Always good to catch up with these characters.
Dont have anything to hand that I want to start yet so a trip to the bookshop tomorrow! I'll be after Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch and His Majesty's Dragon

Finished Pawn of Prophecy. Gave it 4 stars. I love the coming of age fantasy books that are full of innocence. This is one of those tales. I only have one criticism of this book and it's the ending. It reads like it ends in the middle instead of a good place to pause. Yes, I know. It's a series but it just didn't end right to me. With that being said, I will continue to read this wonderful tale. Now I'm on to Mistress of the Empire .

Just saw this... Planning next year's challenge already? Haha :)

Yes I am. It will be all series'. I have so many open and it may be time to get some of them closed. There are some that I won't finish because I didn't like the first book enough to go on.

But, I really enjoy the other challenges so I'm going to finish those this year.

Well, my local library has done it to me again. Looks like I may be reading The Hammer of Thor this month but I won't mind.

Ah! The copy of Red Rising I was waiting for is finally available! :D
Cheers to libraries destroying our reading plans :)

message 66: by Jason (new)

Jason | 131 comments I feel your pain guys, I've had the same thing. Not only from libraries but also from bookshops. I went last night and they had almost nothing I was after. They did have Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch though so I started that today

Illuminae was made available at the library earlier than I expected. I'll start it right after I finish Red Rising.

I'll never finish An Echo of Things to Come :p

message 68: by Janette (new)

Janette | 211 comments I have just finished Red Rising and now started the second one. Definitely a cross between The Hunger Games and Ender's Game. I enjoyed it and looking forward to seeing how it all works out. Does it count as Fantasy though? I have shelved it as Science Fiction

Ctgt | 142 comments About halfway through my reread of Deadhouse Gates and decided to try Ship of Magic on audio.

message 71: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Assassin's Apprentice by Robin Hobb was as disappointing as his Soldier's Son trilogy. Great world, interesting magic system, but his writing doesn't do a thing for me. I gave it a 3 star review here:
https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

message 72: by Joseph (new)

Joseph | 1651 comments Finished The Savage Tales of Solomon Kane and, for something completely different, started Yoon Ha Lee's Raven Stratagem.

message 73: by Elise (new)

Elise (ghostgurl) | 1028 comments I finished Authority. I didn't really like it apart from a few scenes and the ending, which left me just curious enough to finish the trilogy off. So, I'm reading Acceptance.

You'll find that Red Rising stops being like any of those YA books after the first few chapters of book two. I was rather relieved by that. It is solidly sci-fi.

message 75: by Janette (new)

Janette | 211 comments Finished Golden Son and enjoyed that. Have started book 3 but got a bit bored after a few chapters.
I am currently comfort reading my way through the Dragon books. Finished Dragonflight last night. After over 30 years, it is still one of my favourite books and series.
I will go back to Morning Star after a bit of a break.

message 76: by Heather (new)

Heather (bruyere) I need to work my way through more of the series. I think I only read the first two Dragon books.

message 77: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Spell Blind by David B. Coe was a really good urban fantasy & mystery thriller. I gave it a 4 star review here:

This look interesting Jim. I put it on my TBR list.

message 79: by Marc (new)

Marc (authorguy) | 393 comments Recently read Heart Blade, currently reading Super Powereds: Year 1. Loved the first, really enjoying the second.

message 80: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) A Darkness Forged in Fire by Chris Evans is a surprisingly good first novel & first of a trilogy. The trilogy is all published, a huge plus. On the face, it looks like a pretty typical fantasy, but it has some surprising nuances. I gave it a 4 star review here:

I read those a few years back and liked them -- he was one of the earlier "flintlock fantasy" guys.

Joseph | 1651 comments Finished Raven Stratagem which, wow, and started The Tower of Swallows, the penultimate book in Andrzej Sapkowski's Witcher series.

Love the Witcher. Great series.

I finally finished the third game (well, I finished Witcher 3 proper back in 2015, but I finally got around to playing Hearts of Stone and Blood & Wine) so I decided it was time to finish the book series as well.

message 85: by Matt (new)

Matt West (stillmattwest) February was a good reading month. I finished The Well of Ascension, read The Hero of Ages, and then A Man Called Ove. I just started The Emperor's Blades yesterday and it has been a lot of fun so far.

message 86: by Jason (new)

Jason | 131 comments Finished Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch. Only 3 stars for me.
Started The Republic of Thieves book 3 of the Gentleman Bastards

message 87: by Heather (new)

Heather (bruyere) Emperor's Blades is a great series! It gets darker the further in you get, which is kinda nice.

Matt West (stillmattwest) Robin wrote: "Currently reading Tigana and making my through the Dresden Files, about to start Turn Coat, on audio book."

I read Tigana something like twenty years ago but parts of it still stick with me. Very good, very unique fantasy novel.

So I have family in the hospital and all I had was an old IPad that had Storms of Vengeance on it. So I read it. I gave it 4 stars. It was very good but it ended like it was the middle of a story. It was good enough for me to read on but it would be way, way down the list. So I'm not sure if I will. Also, finished Mistress of the Empire. Great, great series. The whole series gets a five star. Started The Hammer of Thor.
