► UNSOLVED: One specific book > YA/time travel book about a child that becomes another child from years before at night. The other child (from the Victorian Age) gets sick and dies (maybe? or the main character thinks she dies). Spoilers ahead.

Rachel | 4 comments I do not remember the book super clearly but I think it had a girl that traveled in time at night. When she went through a gate, she would become a girl that used to live in the house 100 years before. I think it was British, with a dark blue cover and a portrait of a girl on the front. The girl from 100 years before eventually gets sick (measles?) and (view spoiler) When the main character wakes up, she realizes she needs to appreciate the history of her house.

Rachel, I noticed Tom's Midnight Garden is linked at the top of this thread. Is this your book?

Rachel | 4 comments I was wondering if it was (I know it was one of the books I read around that time) but the details are a little different than what I was thinking (male, not female protagonist, the girl doesn’t die).

Around what year did you read this book?

Here is a plot summary Tom's Midnight Garden (1958) by Philippa Pearce on Wikipedia - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tom%27s...

Here is the Google Books preview - https://books.google.com/books?id=bqj... There are different cover images.

Rachel | 4 comments I read it in 2009 but it was definitely an older book (guessing mid-late 1900s). I’m planning on rereading Tom’s Midnight Garden to see if that’s the one or if I have to keep looking.

Rachel | 4 comments That name doesn’t ring a bell but what I’m thinking of is a similar story!

This also really sounds like Charlotte Sometimes to me!

Sarah (drsarah) | 176 comments I also thought it was going to be 'Charlotte Sometimes'. However, doubtful about that after reading your description:

In 'Charlotte Sometimes' it's a particular bed in a boarding school that causes the changeover, not a gate.

In 'Charlotte Sometimes' the main character *isn't* in the other girl's body when she dies. She finds out about the other girl's death only after coming back to her own time for good.

So probably not that one.
