Uno begins in....

📚 Only books STARTED after the challenge begins can count. The challenge starts on Thursday 1, 2016 at 7pm AEDST (Australian Eastern Daylight Savings Time).

📚 Books must be more than 100 pages in length. If it is a Childrens book or a graphic novel, we need to verify it is more than 25,000 words on arbookfind.com.

📚 Your finished books need to be on your UNO shelf AND marked as "read" for them to count.

📚 Please make notes of how your book may count. The more options we have the better! (Letters used in UNO are Z,O,T,H,F,I,V,E,S,N,K,P and of course if another team member has read the book before. Please friend our team members!)

📚 For coloured cards, the cover needs to be 50% or more of the colour by using this colour tool. If in doubt, ask me or Apoorv as we can check it and/or take to the captains group for another opinion

📚 This is a social challenge, not a competitive one. We'd love to get points, but the main aim of the game is to have fun, read lots and get to know each other :)

Eris is the most massive and second-largest dwarf planet known in the Solar System. Eris was discovered in January 2005 by a Palomar Observatory-based team led by Mike Brown, and its identity was verified later that year. In September 2006 it was named after Eris, the Greek goddess of strife. Eris is the ninth most massive object directly orbiting the Sun, and the 16th most massive overall, because seven moons are more massive than all known dwarf planets. It is also the largest which has not yet been visited by a spacecraft. Eris' mass is about 0.27% of the Earth mass, about 27% more than dwarf planet Pluto, although Pluto is slightly larger by volume.

Hello, Team Eris!

I'm Laura. This is my third round of Uno, I love this team challenge!

I live in the U.S. in New Jersey by the beach with my husband, our two dogs, and two cats. I'm am elementary school teacher, currently teaching 5th grade. I read a lot of upper elementary children's books because of that, but during Uno season, I make sure they count toward the game using AR Bookfinder. ;)

Our school subscribes to a workshop approach to reading, so there are times when all my students are reading different novels. In theory, this shouldn't matter. As I conference with them, I should still (in theory) be able to gauge their understanding. However, I really like to be on the same page as my students (no pun intended) so I read their books too, if they seem interesting to me. I love to talk to them about books, and what better way to do that than to read what they are reading?

I've always loved reading and will read a little of most everything, but I do tend to read to escape and de-stress. My job doesn't seem like I would need an escape or to de-stress that much, but this world of high-stakes testing, increased rigor, and data-driven instruction has made education quite demanding.

Looking forward to a fun game this year and getting to know some new teammates!

So, I've been looking at our cards. We have:

Reverse -- 5
Colors:
1 Red
3 Red
4 Blue
7 Blue
2 Yellow
2 Yellow
Wild Draw 4 -- 2 where we "Read a book that can fit for any of the coloured cards you have that month (i.e. you are duplicating one of your coloured cards)"

So, really that's eight color cards for us in February.

I've been doing a little research and planning and so far, I can cover:

* 2 of the 5 Reverse cards
* 4 Blue
* 2 Yellow

I don't usually plan what I'm going to read, but during Uno, I like to make sure I do my part in completing the more challenging cards.

Once our "working spreadsheet" is linked up, I'll fill in the details.

I have been on GR for about 4 years I am a retired nurse and i read a lot but my husband is having a knee replacement on 22 January so will be in nurse mode for a bit.

I have 3 children and 6 utterly gorgeous grandchildren

I like literary or contemporary fiction best but read all sorts - fantasy, non-fiction, etc If i start a book I generally finish it. I have KU which makes it easy to slot things into challenges. I run a book club in Leeds west Yorkshire where i live. I am doing the SRC so like my books to work for both challenges

do you know i played this last year but am confused - every card has a colour so every book we have to read will need to have a cover of that colour - yes?

so for us 1 red will need to have one of these Read a book that:
- has a 1 or One in the title
- has a title starting with O
- has an author first name or surname starts with O
- has a character with a first name, surname or nickname starting with O
- is set in a place name starting with O
- is book 1 in a series

AND a red cover

As far as the color cards go, we are assigned only a certain number of color cards in our hands each month. This time we were dealt 6 color cards:

1 Red
3 Red
4 Blue
7 Blue
2 Yellow
2 Yellow

So, for example, as you said, we'd have to read a book with a red cover and also fulfills the 1 card (O in character, title, setting, etc.).

BUT, this year, there was a slight change to the rules. For any Wild Draw 4 cards, we need to "Read a book that can fit for any of the coloured cards you have that month (i.e. you are duplicating one of your coloured cards)".

We were dealt two Wild Draw 4 cards this month, so really that is a total of 8 color cards this month. Both Wild Draw 4 cards are in our first hand this month.

do the wild draws only need to repeat the colour or the number too

I have nothing to fit any of the colour cards so if the wild has to repeat both the colour and its number I have nothing at all, I am not sure I want to be so restricted on reading that i have to find a new book for every task so I wait with bated breath on answers to these questions

hey team, sorry for checking in so late!

my name is Christina and I'm one of the co-captains! I'm 27 years old, live in Austria (GMT+1) and work as a waitress in my family's restaurant. I'm mostly online late at night, but also here and there throughout the day.
apart from at work, you can usually find me walking (or cuddling) my dog, in my bed or on the sofa watching netflix or youtube, or reading of course. I like to read a lot of different genres, but my TBR grows longer and longer and I can never keep up haha!

I really wish I could have made it online sooner, but as I can see Laura has already jumped in explaining a few things - thanks for that! :)

and I think we also have 2 newbies to the UNO Challenge in our team, so feel free to ask anything and don't feel like you're annoying us; we're a team after all and we're sticking together! :)

As for our cards, of course we have to especially work together to fill the coloured ones, but everyone should really read what they WANT/LIKE to read! what makes us finish books quicker is if we enjoy them, so there shouldn't be any restrictions :) (except for the fact that the books still have to be 100+ pages (and 25,000+ words if they're graphic novels, children's books, etc.) haha!)

We'll shout specific cards out every now and then if we think needed, but as for the start of the challenge, just read, read, read, and we'll try to figure out the rest :)

Hi everyone. I am Jenny, and i am one of the newbies to this game. I read a lot of books, and have an entire bookcase devoted to books purchased, but not read yet, so i should be able to find books that the team needs. But, i really don't know how to play. So, be patient with me, i will deliver.

I own a picture frame shop in Phoenix, AZ, where I live with two kitties. Their picture is my member photo if you are interested. I read mainly fiction, sci-fi, mystery, and science books. Or, whatever looks good at my local bookstore. I am also a political junkie (left-leaning), a devoted Green Bay Packers fan (even when they suck), a NYT crossword puzzle addict, and a good food and good whisky lover. So, not only books. And the Walking Dead. And Project Runway.

Anyway, i am looking forward to playing Uno with all of you.

Your cats are adorable! I love how they are cuddling together in your picture. My two tolerate each other, but I don't think I'd ever catch them cuddling.

I also love Project Runway! I've watched it since the first season and all the All Stars, but not the Juniors.

Uno is one of the easiest and least restrictive team challenges I've come across, which helps keep it fun. You'll pick up the rules quickly. I've heard it called the gateway challenge!

And, yes, audiobooks count. :)

I have just noticed it is nearly 900 pages so i will read it if necessary but may not be the best first choice

I just found out (I'm not sure if this was clear before) that each coloured card can only be duplicated once for a Wild Draw 4, but that definitely shouldn't be a problem in February since we only have two WD4.

Let's see if I am getting this right-
Books need to match both color and number. So, a quick glance at my shelves gives me the following-


Red cover, author's name begins with O, for red 1.


Yellow cover, 2 in the title, for yellow 2.


Red cover, main character's name begins with H, for red 3.


Red cover, H in the title, also for red 3.


Blue cover, main character's name begins with F, for blue 4.

If this is the right formula for playing the cards, then I am happy to read any of these for our challenge. I will look for more once I know if I am doing it correctly.

Yes, Jenny, just for the color cards. We check that the covers are at least 50% of the color using the Tin Eye Color Extractor. The link for that is somewhere in one of my posts above.

You just reminded that I also have Lily and the Octopus! I bought it last month in Nantucket and forgot about it during the Christmas rush. I have a bookcase in our office which is filled mostly with books I haven’t read yet, and it must be in there somewhere. That bookcase is full, and there’s just stacks of books in front. Quite a bookwormy mess.

Do any of you have really nice shelving or a well organized reading room? My husband and I have been trying to figure it out for our messy office, but it is one of those projects that always gets pushed to the back burner.
