I wonder if Rob will see this. I feel like he's read one or more that sound like it'd fit the bill! I'll keep an ear out :)

Soo (silverlyn) | 1007 comments @ David - Ha! I found Labyrinth and read it. I'm sure I read it years ago. It was a nice jaunt back into the series. Now I want to re-read Warrior's Apprentice.

message 3103: by Don (new)

Don Dunham Soo, I noticed that you had gone through many, many audiobooks. Do you mind listing your favorite 10? because I'm always sifting for the good stuff.

Anna (vegfic) | 10434 comments Yes, please do list your favorite audiobooks in the Best and Worst Audiobooks and Narrators thread!

Anthony (albinokid) | 1482 comments I just finished Assassin's Quest and I’m amazed that these books aren’t being shouted from the rooftops. Granted, I only read the first book of The Wheel of Time, but Robin Hobb puts Robert Jordan to shame. And these books have more heart and soul in them than all of Game of Thrones (the tv adaptation of which I’ve enjoyed for the most part). Allison, given your love for epic fantasy, and your shared disdain for The Eye of the World, I’m urging you to give these a go.

Now it’s on to some short stories, and finally the long-awaited Children of Time reread.

Oh, I'm so glad you loved it!! It's extremely high on my "TBR" list, it's just been an issue finding time! I have a feeling already I will love these, and I can't wait to join the discussion that's been taunting me in the BR thread.

Anthony (albinokid) | 1482 comments I am indeed so curious to see if it hits the buttons for you that I think it will...

Jacqueline | 2428 comments I loved the first one in the Farseer series and I’m still trying to pick up 2 and 3 in a second hand store. I could order them new or read them on my iPad but New is too expensive and the iPad is exhausting me more than usual. I’m going today to see if I can pick them up at the second hand Bookshop here near the Mountains house. And if I can’t find those they have a great $2 stand and a free stand there.

Soo (silverlyn) | 1007 comments Don, I'm going to post in the audiobook thread.

Trike, you are a good source for adding books to my TBR. =D

Trike Mea culpa.

message 3114: by Don (new)

Don Dunham Thank You Soo !

message 3115: by Rob (new)

Rob (robzak) | 876 comments Despite not being much of a horror fan I decided to double down on the horror with Halloween coming up later this month. It turns out both of these books fell into the narrow type of horror I tend to enjoy. Apparently both are being turned into TV shows as well, so I guess I'll be checking those out now..

Lovecraft Country - ★★★★☆ - (My Review)

NOS4A2 - ★★★★☆ - (My Review)

Nice! Always a pleasant surprise when something outside of the norm is something we end up liking a lot. I'm seriously considering trying LC soonish.

I'm so late to the game on this, but I loved the Reckoners series when I read it, and I'm typically not into superhero type stuff. Hope you enjoy it!

We're doing a buddy read of this...next month? Or later this month? I forget, it's on the calendar. Anyways, you should come talk about it with us!!

It's okay, Anthony, one of these days we'll get our time turners or become Time Lords or inherit the powers of Dr. Strange or something, and then the 24 hour day will be NO MATCH for all our grandiose plans. Wen, if your schedule's free, we shall rope you into the madness ^^

message 3124: by Wen (new)

Wen | 401 comments You guys do lots of meaningful things, not like me... I used to do things before, hmmm, like playing cello but something something so not anymore(what). I am happy to join your madness:)

message 3125: by Dawn F (new)

Dawn F (psychedk) | 1223 comments We could all use a TARDIS to make time for all the amazing literature that awaits us. I even hear it has a library!

I’m in for the BR of Black God’s Drums too, btw.

@Wen Cello is pretty awesome, though! And if your plan is to follow along with our madness then that’s pretty awesome too. Madness is contagious, you know ;-)

A TARDIS would be handy!

I started Children of Time yesterday, but this week is craaaazy busy, so I've only read three chapters so far, but I already love it! (Hopefully traveling later this week will help me catch up.)

I feel v v grateful for the fact that I'm currently doing a course on the history of certain schools of political thought, because I feel like it helped me get through this quickly and be able to absorb it pretty thoroughly. But oh my god what a book!!!!!!!!

I am so glad that more people are reading this book. And I bet you had some great connections because of your class, Rose!! What a treat to be able to enjoy the art form and also delve into the theories behind it at the same time!

message 3130: by Dawn F (new)

Dawn F (psychedk) | 1223 comments One of my favorites as well! Le Guin transforms theory into living, believable and accessible practice. I was gobbling it all up like a starved person.

Aaaw! How wonderful! You make me feel like I might've chosen wrong with The Left Hand of Darkness for my current read. It was a toss between that and this. Which is not bad either, but I'd really like that "wow" feeling right about now.

message 3135: by Kaa (new)

Kaa | 1545 comments @Jemppu: I don't think you can be wrong when it comes to Le Guin, and the Left Hand of Darkness is a very good book, but The Dispossessed is much more "wow" for me too.

message 3137: by Dawn F (new)

Dawn F (psychedk) | 1223 comments @Jempuu Oh no no no, The Left Hand of Darkness is *beautiful* but has a very specific focus. The Dispossessed is a more wide work of speculative fiction and to compare the two would be unfair. They both travel along the same thoughts and ideas in their own way. Just read both at your own pace :)

Yes, exactly! I think The Dispossessed does more to capture Le Guin's wider political vision, which can be really inspiring. (Talking about it is making me feel like I ought to finally go read Mythmakers and Lawbreakers: Anarchist Writers on Fiction, which includes an interview with her.)

I strongly believe you ought to do this...so that you can report back if it's as amazing as it sounds. At which point, I will add it to my 2019 nonfic list.

Hobb is one of my top five fave fantasy writers. Robert Jordan's work rambles, but Hobb holds your attention, and her writing style is not only highly readable, but beautiful too.

message 3149: by Gabi (last edited Oct 18, 2018 02:01PM) (new)

Gabi | 3441 comments Due to mental escapism (or however you want to call it) I read/finished quite a lot this last week:

Nor Crystal Tears, which sits on my shelf for more decades than I like to recall. I liked the POV of an alien on the brink of a first contact. Yet the characterisation often felt too simplistic to me. (and too human at that),

Dreadnought, which was nice … but that was as far as I emotionally got with this book (I'm simply not the right target audience for it),

The Dispossessed, about the question if one can be an anarchist in an anarchistic society. LeGuin brilliant as always. I read the prequel shortstory The Day Before the Revolution straight after it,

The Sparrow, which I wanted to like more than I did in the end, due to a certain disconnection with most of the characters,

(ETA: this sounds too negative - I was glad that I read "The Sparrow" (3.5 stars from me), I just wanted it to have been perfect)

An Unkindness of Ghosts, which I liked more than I wanted to like it (very difficult feelings here),

Waters of Salt and Sin, which I choose for the cover for the TBR cleanup (I had several chats with the cover artist over on deviant art) - unfortunately it turned out, that for me the cover was the best part of the novel. I have no idea, how the high community rating on this novel came about.

May I ask: Where did you learn such good English?
