Name That Tune - August's Toppler
Dawn wrote: "....I even had my song picked. I was going with Summertime, I don't know how many versions of this song I have, I love it so much. I ..."One of many beautiful songs from an American Folk Opera, Porgy and Bess.
There are over 30,000 recorded performances!!!
Dawn wrote: "I love the Miles Davis Porgy & Bess album."The very first song I purchaed from iTunes when I got my iPOD was the Ella Fitzzgerald & Louis Armstrong version of Summertime from Porgy & Bess. My daughter was teaching me how to set up my iTunes account and she asked me what I wanted to buy. I was like the deer in the headlights and it was the first song that came into my head!
I wake up every morning to Louis Armstrong singing "What a Wonderful World"

Love it. You're a perfect wordsmith for this challenge!☺
So, rereading the rules. Does the rewritten song have to have the title of the book in it? Or can it just have some of it? Or plotlines (with spoilers marked)?
I think I've decided on my book and my song and I'm quite excited. I even have some ideas on what to change the lyrics too but I'll wait on that.
My interpretation of the rules is that the title of the book would be the title of the song. The lyrics are inspired by the book.My song will be titled "Fool Moon" (after the book) and the lyrics will all be howling (to the melody of "Blue Moon") because it's about a werewolf. Well, maybe not all howling, but it sure is tempting.

Howling can be your chorus, which can be most of the song :)
Rusalka - Janice is right that the book title has to be the song title. Whether or not it's in the lyrics is up to you.
Not a complaint, just an observation. This is really hard if you want to read something with a long title. Most song titles are 1-4 words from my brief look through my music library. Hats off to anyone who achieves a long one.
Then I will say it won't have to be the whole title, but enough to get the sense of it.Also, I was thinking, 8 lines sounds pretty hard, so I'm going to drop that to 6, and am assuming that a lot of us will have a chorus where we can repeat a line a couple of times.
I've been trying to narrow my song down (I have it down to five so far). Should probably pick a book and see which one it fits, but right now I'm leaning towards Moondance by Van Morrison.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Md4wgr...

Wow! I have to stop clicking open these music links. I listened to that then was off on a journey with Van and Shana (his daughter), then Van and Tom Jones, then Tom Jones and Cyndi Lauper.
Got to get back to reading now! Thanks for the interlude.☻
How about Robinson Crusoe set to Sounds of Silence by Simon and Garfunkel? I don't know how to load audios, though, so I guess I'll get out of singing, right?
Cherie wrote: ""Hello Friday, my old friendYou've come to walk with me again?"

Thanks, Cherie. I recently read The Moonstone by Wilkie Collins, in which the main character constantly refers to Robinson Crusoe as the book he turns to almost like his personal bible. I've never read the book, so it's on my TBR list and this is a good place to fit it in.

I have The Moonstone on my TBR list along with Robinson Crusoe. I thought that I read Robinson Crusoe a long time ago, but I can't remember. I bought a volume with five of Defoe's books in it, but it is at the bottom of my challenge list at 1003 pages.
I think I read somewhere that Friday was not really in the book, but I cannot say. When I saw your song, I just couldn't help myself. :)
Janice wrote: "One more work day... and then it's reading day! Yay!"There is a song for that too! "Just One More Day" Otis Redding

Less than 12 hours to go! I haven't even decided which book to read. At least I've narrowed it down to three.
I can't work out a song. Maybe I'll just read a book and see if something gets stuck in my head while reading it.
I was going to read Robinson Crusoe for this challenge, but I went to check out my audiobook read by John Lee (a favorite narrator) and am now almost finished.So...I put these books in the Fruit Machine:
Bel Canto by Ann Patchett
Far from the Madding Crowd by Thomas Hardy
Persuasion by Jane Austen
The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver
Tipping the Velvet by Sarah Waters
The Fruit Machine picked Tipping the Velvet. This I the only published book by Sarah Waters that I've not yet read, and she has a new one, The Paying Guests, coming out in September.
I'm not at all sure what song to use, but I'll work it out as I read the book.
Cherie, I now know whether or not there's a character named Friday in Robinson Crusoe! (view spoiler)
Not long now. I'm excited! I might have to pull a late night tonight as I've arranged to go climbing in the morning. I have picked quite a short book though so I should manage to read it.
I want to try and read From the Land of Green Ghosts: A Burmese Odyssey so I've done with my around the world list, 2.5ish-yrs on.So far, with Jmom's concession on the title I could work it into Ghost Ship by Tripod https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tt0hm... (comedy group so M15 there for sexual references... I need a better voice to do those warnings. The guy who does the MA15+ ones on our television in Australia always makes you sound like you're doing something really naughty).
Or Black Bugs by Regurgitator https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0x9Ut...
That is classic Rusalka. I've not heard of them before. I see they have loads on YouTube for me to work my way through.
I'm so excited for this challenge! I'm going to be reading Invisible Man. This is going to be interesting since the author, Ralph Ellison studied music. I still have no idea what song to use though and I hope I can even finish the book.
My excitement is toppling over (he he) as I've been thinking about my song and have some ideas on lyrics. Can't wait to get started on the book and the song. Is it 5pm already?!?
I am sitting this one out but it sounds like it is going to be a load of fun! I am looking forward to seeing and hearing some of the songs that you all come up with. Enjoy everyone!

Both pretty weird!☻

That was my first thought. Another, more silly, is Tiny Tim's Tiptoe through the Tulips!
Pragya wrote: "I keep getting confused about time. Just confirming it starts about 5:30 hours from now?"Check this link, which gives the current time in New York: http://time.is/New_York
We start at 12 noon, New York time.
I'm re-thinking my book choice, and I think I'm going to read Bel Canto by Ann Patchett. My two major reasons are:1. I really want to get to my Chunksters! I'm almost finished reading the final book for a challenge in another group. Bel Canto can also serve for the YLTO Monthly Challenge. That will leave me free to read Chunksters exclusively for the rest of August (and maybe longer) beginning tomorrow.
2. I got the audiobook of Bel Canto from my library, so I can listen while I cook, do laundry, etc. Tipping the Velvet would be a Kindle read of almost 500 pages. I'd have to put it down to do other things, and any unexpected distractions could leave me short of time.
So...Bel Canto is my final choice for this one. I'm going offline to finish the other book I'm reading, which is Galápagos by Kurt Vonnegut.
Sarah wrote: "That is classic Rusalka. I've not heard of them before. I see they have loads on YouTube for me to work my way through."I really like Tripod. Saw them in concert twice and they were really fun. Towards the end of their stint though, you could tell they were only doing it for the money, which was sad. But they were brilliant in their prime.
They used to do a segment on radio once a week called "Song in an Hour". People would call up with random things to chuck in a song. Like: "Metallica", "mouse", "frisbee", "paraplegic". And they wrote and performed a song within an hour using them. Hats off.
Almeta wrote: "Both pretty weird!☻"You guys never got the 'gurge in the US? So sad for you :( Aussie 90s music is the best!
I'm not going to very able to participate in this toppler - it sounds like a lot of fun - looking forward to seeing how it unfolds and enjoying it from the sidelines. Good luck everyone!
