Candice | 4 comments Okay, so I am definitely having a hard time reading the books I had decided for each reading challenge.
I keep reading other random books that I find and get distracted with.
Needless to say, my TBR list keeps growing and I haven't touched the books I plan to read for the challenge.
Anyone else having this problem or am I just weak?

message 257: by Vanessa (last edited Jul 11, 2018 07:06PM) (new)

Vanessa Candice, I tried to frontload my reading challenge early in the year. I figured I would probably run out of steam/get distracted as the year went on, and that’s what has happened.

I also had a real run of a reading slump in the spring and while I’m out of it now, I’m only reading books that I’m really interested in atm.

(Also, some of those challenges I was never going to finish anyway. I don’t read romance, I don’t care who it’s about. And I don’t want to invest time in reading a book just because the cover is ugly.)

I made up a list when I started the challenge, but I also assumed I might ignore most of the list. I read studiously for the challenge for a bit, in part because a bunch of books I already planned to read met various tasks. But for the last 2+ months I've been reading things that cross my path without any attention to the challenge. So you are not alone.

message 259: by Krista (new)

Krista | 143 comments Oh you are sooooo not alone, Candice. It's been an especially tough challenge for me last year and this, as I'm also doing Around the Year in 52 books.

My best recommendation is to allow yourself to swap out books if you want to. If you're struggling with one topic and getting the book read that you'd planned, find something else. Pick a shorter book. Pick a young adult book. If you enjoy them, pick a comic or graphic novel.

I found a great book for one topic and started it last week. It's over 700 pages - but there are many pictures and so far it's a really enjoyable read, so I'm sticking with it.

You are not alone. The first year I tried this challenge I forced myself to read all of the books and neglect my TBR list until I'd finished the challenge. After that first year I decided that I read for pleasure and putting pressure on myself to finish the challenge was putting undue pressure on myself and ruining half the pleasure of reading. Now, I read as many of the books in the challenge as I can, use the categories as a guideline to read more widely in different genres and also read any other books I want to read whether they fit the challenge or not. If I don't finish the challenge I refuse to berate myself for not finishing it. This is supposed to be a fun thing, don't make it into something stressful.

Cheryl Hager (cheryl_is_reading) | 73 comments I'm happy to report I finished mine in May. Like Krista, and others I'm sure, I also swapped out choices different from my original picks for time constraints or content or likeability. Now I'm working on the Summer Reading Challenge (expert level) floating around GR. ;)

Edit: Looks like I deleted my original list on this thread...

That’s the truth. If it exposes you to a new genre or a book you wouldn’t have otherwise read (or bumps up one languishing on your TBR) and you enjoy the experience, it’s a success.

I find that as much as I love and utilize Goodreads, I find the same thing happens. I find myself getting preoccupied with how many books I need to read in a period of time, and it ruins the fun of reading for me a bit.
