Tina (teanah) | 55 comments 261 currently owned unread books, 83 of those are of the dead tree variety the rest are ebooks/audiobooks. I've got about 30 preorders/Kickstarter books coming next year as well. Holiday presents will probably add a few more. Yipes.

Well that'll take 3 years to read through. Lol. This challenge should be a nice incentive to make a dent. I'm going to need a spreadsheet to keep track.

Trike Sarah Anne wrote: "Umm... the second one there says the second, or any subsequent book in the series."

I read that as

1 - 5
2 - 10
3 - 10
4 - 10
5 - 20
6 - 10
7 - 10
8 - 10
9 - 10
10 - 30

message 53: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 3915 comments Thanks, Trike! That's exactly it.

message 54: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 3915 comments Oh! I should have added one for reading with a cat on your lap. Like 2000 points because then I'd blow you all out of the water :)

message 55: by Patricia (new)

Patricia | 38 comments After more review, I see that my previous understanding of the point schedule for the Series category is WRONG! I read a lot of series so maybe someone can clarify. I’m feeling very dense.

serious competition here - though my Pyewacket seems to prefer sleeping on my chest rather than my lap as though she's a fur boa around my neck

I am loving watching this can of worms just blossom, to mix metaphors. You all are amazing and I cannot wait to see your shenanigans.

message 58: by Data (new)

Data | 16 comments Oh dear - I still have boxes and bookshelves of books to add. I think I might have to do the add as I go thing, and I've already got the spreadsheet. Hmmm, guessing I have at least 400 unread paper books, I think that will keep me busy. Might have to move up to a database this year.

Sarah | 3915 comments Patricia wrote: "After more review, I see that my previous understanding of the point schedule for the Series category is WRONG! I read a lot of series so maybe someone can clarify. I’m feeling very dense."

What Trike shows above is correct. Books 1,5, and 10 have special numbers but any other is 10 points.

Should i remove the word "second " and just leave it as "subsequent"? This one appears to be especially confusing for people.

message 60: by CBRetriever (new)

CBRetriever | 6113 comments maybe second and numbers not divisible by 5 (yielding an integer)?

message 61: by Patricia (new)

Patricia | 38 comments Thanks Sarah Ann. Appreciate all you do.

Trike Sarah Anne wrote: "Oh! I should have added one for reading with a cat on your lap. Like 2000 points because then I'd blow you all out of the water :)"

2000 per cat? I live literally 2 miles from an animal shelter and can muster up a clowder in five minutes. :p

BONUS: If you have fewer unread books on your shelves on 1/1/19 - 500 points.

I like this.

Trying to make a spreadsheet now.

message 64: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 3915 comments I added "outside your comfort zone," which I thought I had on there but it was not. And the cat on your lap one. So if you read with a cat on your lap and a cup of tea, not only do you complete the full cliche, you get to add 10 points to that book :)

message 65: by Meredith (new)

Meredith | 1777 comments Yay! I already had a goal of reducing my TBR pile in 2018 so this adds a fun element to it. Thanks for coming up with the points scheme. :)

I don't know how many books are in the pile, I am going to add them to my Goodreads over the next week or so. Based on another discussion here, I made an exclusive shelf for my pile (as opposed to GR "want to read" shelf).

I always read with a cup of tea but don’t have a cat. Will a stuffed one do or can I use my dog? I’ll do anything for points. Ha.

message 67: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 3915 comments Nope, it has to be the full cliche :)

message 68: by Anna (last edited Dec 16, 2017 09:02AM) (new)

Anna (vegfic) | 10434 comments A genre/subgenre you usually avoid - 15 points
Outside your comfort zone - 15 points

Isn't that almost the same thing? But both of these are good for me, since most of my physical books are outside my preferred genre and subject :D

And I agree that any animal companion should count, or at least I demand extra points if I read a cat book! Cat Out of Hell is actually the very last physical book I ever bought, but I've already read it.

message 69: by Maggie (new)

Maggie K | 693 comments sadly, demands seem to be met with an ummm... around here, but it doesnt get you booted, so try anyway!

message 70: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 3915 comments Anna, when I was searching for outside comfort zone I missed the genre one. I'll delete the comfort. zone one.

message 71: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 3915 comments Maggie wrote: "sadly, demands seem to be met with an ummm... around here, but it doesnt get you booted, so try anyway!"

Please feel free to explain. The only time this happened Trike was asking for a rule that already existed.

In other words, as far as I can see you were just very snide for no reason.

message 72: by Adeline (new)

Adeline | 88 comments Does "A book that any group you're a member of reads as a monthly selection" only count for books selected in 2018 or can we also count past bookclub picks? For example this group read In the Night Garden in 2015 and I've been meaning to read that one for ages.

message 73: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 3915 comments That's a good question. I think I would count it. It's awfully hard to have books you own end up falling in 2018.

message 74: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl (cherylllr) Sarah Anne wrote: "That's a good question. I think I would count it. It's awfully hard to have books you own end up falling in 2018."

Except if you have to buy it, in order to be able to read it with the group, and you are buying it right now because you belong to a group that plans the year's reads ahead of time (which I do).... so, a bonus for owning it in 2017 and reading it *together with a BotM discussion* in 2018?

message 75: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 3915 comments Nice! Mega points.

message 76: by Cheryl (last edited Dec 16, 2017 11:10AM) (new)

Cheryl (cherylllr) No, I mean, could/ would you assign us a bonus number of points for anticipated group reads, as opposed to simpler retroactive ones like Adeline is planning to do?

message 77: by Bill (new)

Bill | 197 comments While sitting in my chair with my cat in my lap and my tea does it count as a group read if I read out loud to my cat? Does it make a difference that he refuses to acknowledge that we have a book club?

message 78: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 3915 comments I'm inclined to give them the same number of points since it encourages the Read All the Books challenge readers.

I actually put that category in there to encourage nominations.

message 79: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl (cherylllr) Gotcha. :)

message 80: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 3915 comments I have two groups reading the same book in Jan/Feb and it's a book I own. Do I get the 25 points for both groups or only one? There are so many questions I didn't anticipate.

I'm going with one.

Wabash says, “This cliche is unfair to Puppies!”

Also, reading with a 40-pound dog on your lap has a higher degree of difficulty. That deserves 5 points. #DoggyEquality

message 82: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 3915 comments Maybe it should be 10 points for cats and 5 points for dogs :)

Sarah | 3915 comments

message 84: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 3915 comments Out of fear of being called speciesist I added dogs. No birds, though. I love the pic, Trike :)

message 85: by Anna (last edited Dec 16, 2017 03:39PM) (new)

Anna (vegfic) | 10434 comments So in addition to buying more books I'm also going to have to acquire a cat. I need to alert the elves. (Are they elves or elfs? Santa's people, I'm not asking the fae for 'faevors'.)

message 86: by Patricia (new)

Patricia | 38 comments Nothing like sitting by the fire with a cup of tea and a 30# poodle on your lap and reading a great book. Ahhhhh.

message 87: by Silvana (new)

Silvana (silvaubrey) | 2791 comments Great, now I have to teach my dog to sit on my lap while I am reading. He loves the floor too much.

message 88: by CBRetriever (new)

CBRetriever | 6113 comments not me - it took too long to train them not to get on the couch and i do not want a 78 pound Chesapeake Bay Retriever sitting on me

message 89: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 3915 comments Oh c'mon, guys! It only has to be one time during the entire book to get 5 points.

Silvana, set him on your lap and pin him while you read a few words. CBRetriever, suck it up.

;)

message 90: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 3915 comments If I was actually having trouble getting them to lay in my lap at any point all I'd have to do is get out The Red Blanket. Once I put that on my lap my Hondo's eyes lock on like a laser and he's THERE.

message 91: by CBRetriever (new)

CBRetriever | 6113 comments I have a green polartec LL Bean throw that attracts my Pyewacket like a magnet and Katje has a plaid one on the foot of the bed that's hers (she's not a lap cat)

message 92: by Patricia (new)

Patricia | 38 comments This so reminds me that whenever I throw the quilt I made across my lap, Oliver Wendell Bones thinks that’s the signal to jump up and snuggle down. Our animal friends are such a blessing.

message 93: by Silvana (new)

Silvana (silvaubrey) | 2791 comments Haha! I love how people are excited to gain points with their pets.

We'll need a separate photo thread for this.

message 94: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 3915 comments Oh, that would be fun! The pic i posted up-thread is my cat. It's one of my favorites and I'll happily share it everywhere. I love seeing everyone's pets.

message 99: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 3915 comments You finally get to read them!

message 100: by Kristin B. (new)

Kristin B. Bodreau (krissy22247) | 726 comments Does it count if the cat sits on your book instead of your lap? My Smokey takes it as a personal offense when I read instead of giving him my undivided attention. Which is what leads to the book sitting.
