Oh, yeah. We're definitely gonna pile on. Like with TBRs, we only add, we never subtract.

Stephanie (quiltsrme) | 39 comments It's the end of October and I won't be finishing any more books this month. I thought, therefore, that I would post my current total of points which is 4,399. That's 50 books that qualified. Most of them were over 5 years old. Yay that they are read. Unfortunately, I have a lot that are still unread, but working on them!

While listening to an audiobook, I set up a spreadsheet that totes up the costs of all my unread ebooks, audiobooks and magazines* (from 2010), and holy cow, that is a LOT of money for stuff I have not yet read. That will help me stay focused on reading what I already have and lower purchases of new acquisitions. Granted, there are a couple of series that I held off starting until I had all the books, but still, wow!

*literary magazines such as Asimov's Scifi.

Stephanie (quiltsrme) | 39 comments I'm now up to 5,120 points with 56 qualifying books. Getting a lot of reading and listening done since I injured my knee on Halloween. Not able to do much else. I expected to be up and doing in a few days. It's 11 days and I still need a walker part of the day, especially after I do my physical therapy exercises. As to the points, I've mostly been focusing on books 5-8 years old. Done with books from 2010 and earlier. Have 18 left from 2011.

Mrs. Joseph! You are getting a lot done too!

Aw, Stephanie, that sucks! I hope you heal soon. Joint injuries are so frustrating. But holy cow, what great progress on your challenge!! Well done!

DivaDiane SM | 3676 comments Is this challenge going to run next year as well? If so, I’m going to join you. I own over unread 1000 books (300+ Dead tree, ca 150 audio and the rest are ebooks) and I’ve been doing pretty well reading them the past couple of years, but it would be nice to see the points rack up in the process!

message 762: by Stephanie (last edited Dec 02, 2018 10:29AM) (new)

Stephanie (quiltsrme) | 39 comments As of November 30, I'm up to 60 qualifying books completed and a total of 5,420 points. I have not been limiting myself to just shortish books either. Some are 600-nearly 900 pages.

I have not had to use the walker for 2 days (yes, this has been over a month now!). Still unable to grocery shop, but my cousin's kid came with me yesterday as my helper to run a bunch of errands that didn't require more than a few steps walking. In fact, we had to change a couple of places because I simply could not walk as far as the cash registers, even if he did the shopping. That goodness Petco lets you buy online and shops for you! Still, it was good to get out, and doing stuff with my cousin's kid is a pleasure (he's 6'3" now!!).

I also have at least 900 ebooks/audiobooks still unlistened to, so happy to do this challenge again next year. I'm focusing on series that I own next year, some of which are not as old as the ones I read for this challenge, so they won't garner as many points. Plus, I don't own some of them, so they wouldn't count as I will get them as I get to that book.

Being that the average number of books read per year in the US is 10-12, anything over that is good. I've been moving, buying a house, and basically waiting a lot, so my total is way up this year.

But, my hubby got me the new 2018 Kindle Paperwhite for an early Xmas pressie, and I feel like I'm getting back into the reading zone now. Gonna see what I can squeeze in this month, and regroup for 2019.

Hopefully 2019 will be a much better year!

message 775: by DivaDiane (last edited Dec 04, 2018 04:25AM) (new)

DivaDiane SM | 3676 comments I decided to do the work and figure out how many points I have racked up even though I really wasn't doing this challenge specifically. I have been doing other TBR/owned books challenges, though, so i'm quite pleased with my total points so far:

2935pts!!

43 total owned books read
4 books read, acquired over 3 years ago,
9 acquired over 5 years ago and
5 acquired over 10 years ago.

28 by authors I've never read before
12 that have won awards
7 that have been made into a movie or other media
1 in a genre I usually avoid (horror)

I read a lot of short poetry collections and kids books so only
10 books 300/10 hours
2 books 500/17 hours

1 subsequent book in a series
2 received as a gift

I'm going to be conservative and say that I read 10 books with tea or coffee. It was most definitely more, but I don't remember.

Also, if reading aloud to a child (instead of with a cat or dog on my lap - no pets) were a category I'd have 14 books (at 5 points each that'd be an additional 70 points!).

And I will definitely have fewer unread books on my shelves come Jan. 1st. I've had a book-buying ban in place (which I don't always adhere to, but is definitely a deterrent) for a couple of years. As it is, I have over 1000 unread books in dead tree, audio and ebook formats.

I have 12 books and exactly 1000 points in the TBR challenge. There's still an opportunity to be fabulous!

I've passed 30 books total this year which for me is immense. So happy, and fired up to do it again next year.

message 777: by AndrewP (new)

AndrewP (andrewca) | 365 comments A lot of my points came from reading the first 5 Wheel of Time books, which I have had for many years :)

message 778: by HeyT (new)

HeyT | 504 comments So even though it's not an official thread/challenge for 2019 I plan on doing this next year with a couple of categorical modifications. I changed the "all own buddy read" and the "three formats" sections to "non-white" and "non-male" categories and since I don't drink coffee/tea changed that to "would recommend to a friend."

I'm hoping by not joining more rigid content challenges I can finally make a dent in my bursting shelves.

message 780: by HeyT (new)

message 781: by Kaa (new)

Kaa | 1543 comments Ooh, HeyT, I like that idea too. I was just going to count the +/- on my owned books for the year, but doing the challenge sounds like more fun.

I like these ideas, so I'm... borrowing them, and making a few changes of my own. :)
- Buddy Read (All own) is now Non-Male Author/MC = 20 points
- 3 Formats is now Non-White Author/MC = 25 points
- Pre-ordered is now Translated = 5 points
- Embarrassing Cover is now Banned/Challenged Book = 20 points
- Embarrassing Cover in Public is now 1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die List = 30 points
- 2017 Holiday Gift is now Book is Older Than Me = 10 points
- Finish a Series is now Collection/Anthology = 15 points

I do most of my reading either on my kindle or on audio, so nobody is going to see my embarrassing covers, and I don't pre-order, like EVER. So I switched these out to get me to (HOPEFULLY) read more broadly. :)

message 785: by Hank (last edited Jan 02, 2019 02:07PM) (new)

Hank (hankenstein) | 1230 comments I am calling it on my owned book challenge. I added two books that I am almost certainly going to finish.

54 owned books read
-24 books on owned list

5400 total points which includes the 500 point bonus for having fewer books, 100 points for number of books read and 25 for reading one of each.

It was a good challenge that I actually try to do every year, I just got to assign points to it this year.

message 786: by Allison, Fairy Mod-mother (new)

Allison Hurd | 14221 comments Mod
Congrats, Hank!! That's great!

message 787: by Kristin B. (new)

Kristin B. Bodreau (krissy22247) | 726 comments I did not do well at all with this challenge. Oops. I've read 57 books this year, and only 9 of them were previously owned.

I didn't want to actually count up how many books I own because that's just something that would break my brain when I add in all the Kindle books. So, I decided to try to just lower my TBR. As you can see from the below breakdown, that did not happen.

Oh well! It was still fun!

Total Points: 740
Number of books read: 9
Starting TBR list: 285
Ending TBR list: 336

message 788: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) | 1894 comments I did pretty good, I read 58 owned books this year. Next year I will do better though. I can FEEL IT.

message 789: by Allison, Fairy Mod-mother (new)

Allison Hurd | 14221 comments Mod
So, I think I said earlier, but the idea I wanted to do that Sarah Anne told me was too mean was to take your total score for this challenge and multiply it by the number by which your TBR has been reduced (ex. 100 books 1/1, 90 books 12/31, multiply by 10. 100 books 1/1, 110 books 12/31, multiply by -10.)

>:D

message 790: by Anna (new)

Anna (vegfic) | 10434 comments I remember that, such an excellent idea! :D

Since we're tallying up, I read 1 owned physical book, and bought one physical book this year. Not the same book.

Well by that methodology I would be at an astounding -37,740. Hehehe

Thankfully that's just my TBR and not books I actually purchased. I've been working on using the library a lot more. (Though I definitely purchased some books I haven't read.)

message 792: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 3167 comments So.. I read 26 books I owned this year.. out of 101.

19 I owned the year prior. 7 were purchased this year.

A grand total of: 1575 points, no bonus. (Deficit of 15 more books purchased then read this year... I'm thinking I need a round 2 for 2019...)

message 793: by Stephanie (last edited Dec 20, 2018 03:52PM) (new)

Stephanie (quiltsrme) | 39 comments With about 11 days left of the challenge, I am currently at 64 qualifying books and a total of 6,095 points! I'll likely get in a few more books, but not many more points because these will be more recent books. My focus has been to finish my oldest books/audiobooks. Still have 11 left, but I thought I would move on to Christmas themed books and TV. :)

message 794: by Allison, Fairy Mod-mother (new)

message 795: by Hank (new)

Hank (hankenstein) | 1230 comments Yeah, well done Stephanie, that is a great total.

message 796: by Meredith (new)

Meredith | 1777 comments I read 42 qualifying books (owned before 2018) for this challenge and have wound up with 3805 points.

Did I read more books than I acquired? Do I get the elusive extra 500 points? Well, my Goodreads "to read pile" shelf has one book fewer than on January 1. (yay!) But, doing the math, I still have to finish all three of the books that I am currently reading to have physically read more than I acquired. If I can finish at least 2 of them, I think I will take the 500 point bonus.

Stephanie (quiltsrme) | 39 comments Thought I would list my final total since both the audiobook and ebook I'm working on will not qualify. I had 71 qualifying books with a final point tally of 6,415. Does not include that 500 points because my TBR is sadly somewhat higher than at the beginning of the year. Blame the closing of audiobookstand for some of that. :)

This has been fun. Next year, I'm focusing on series for which I own most of the books. I didn't quite finish all the books from 2011, but pretty close to it.

rebecca j (technophobe) | 15 comments Out of the 349 books I counted in January, I have managed to read only 40. Which is sad, considering I have read over 100 books this year. What can I say I am hopelessly addicted to buying books as well as reading them! I started the year with 349 owned-not-read books on the shelves, I currently have 318. I only received 6 of them for Christmas, and I gave away approximately 7 large boxes of books to family and friends this year. My home will never be less than overflowing with books, read and unread. Here is my list of owned and read books for 2018:
Year One - Nora Roberts 50 pts.
Odin's Ravens - Kelley Armstrong 35 pts.
Renaissance Faire - anthology 25 pts.
Callahan's Crosstime Saloon - Spider Robinson 35 pts.
The 100 Year Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window - Jonas Jonasson 80 pts.
Judgement Road - Christine Feehan 35 pts.
