As well there are other shelves with my books mixed in with my wife's and kids books.

I'm going to be crap on estimating when I bought a book if I've had it more than a year or so. On the other hand, I know I've preordered at least a couple of 2018 books, which should rack me up some "other" points. (I'm assuming the challenge is to read the books we ALREADY own, not to increase our book-buying in the new year -- which could be dangerous, so I suppose those preorders will be only 2018 books or purchases I count toward this challenge. On the up side, that means instead of counting all my unread books, I can just keep track of whether I read any new buys to find out the ratio to see if I make the bonus.)
It looks like the big money is in series -- maybe I'll finally get around to Michelle West's Sun Sword books.

That's slightly over 10,000 volumes that my husband and I jointly own that we (mostly he) collected for decades...

thanks for putting this one together.

I decided to be pragmatic and just track what I buy and what I read :) I can't possibly count all of my audio and ebooks.

You get points if you own it prior to 12/31/17. Or for pre-orders that were ordered before that.

4 of these book cases full of Paperbacks (IKEA Billy 6 shelf 32" wide units)
2 of these book cases full of HBs (IKEA Billy 16" wide 5 shelf units)
1329 Kindle Books on one account and 61 on another account plus approx 200 Docs on my Kindle
This is gonna be a long term project to total them up point wise.
Define read in terms of cookbooks please, as i might not have read every single recipe in a book (I don't like liver, peanut butter or pickles so I didn't read those recipes).

You're going to get points for the books that you will be reading through 2018.

I would just suggest doing what is fun for you and helps you get through what you own.

You're going to get points for the books that you will be reading through 2018."
I got that, it's that a lot of those books are unread depending on the definition of read and they were definitely purchased before the deadline:
"You claim points if you own the book in print, on ebook, or on audio prior to 12/31/17, and you read them in 2018."
It's the DTBs that are the problem as I'll have to go through them to find the ones I haven't read like:
Vietnam: A History in HB which I received as a present back in the early 70s and haven't yet read. Maybe I'll finally make it through that one
and
Italian Folktales which was another present

Defining 'read' by a percentage, where applicable, works for me. I'll figure something fair out for the others, too. Thank you both for helping me think through issues!

in my case it depends on who gave me the book and how often they visit or if, in the case of the fairy tales, the person is my husband....
and then there were those fancy bound book club classic books....

This challenge will also motivate me to finish cataloging all my owned DTBs in LibraryThing. Hooray x 2!

I kinda think I've pre-won this. :p

Yep, it's for print, ebook, and audio. There's even a 25 point bonus if you do at least one in all three formats.

Well, you do have to read them.

Sorry to be a bit dense but just to super clarify, if I read an audiobook I DON'T own with the same title/author as a print book I DO own but WON'T read in paper, this still counts as reading something I own? I'm thinking maybe not?

Anyway, thank you! I'm going to use this to try and motivate myself to read some of my unread physical books. I already checked that many of them are available from the library as ebooks or e-audios, so I might choose those instead, but as long as I'm reading things I've bought years ago, I'm happy.

I sort of view this challange as encouraging me to read the books I thought were going to be good at one time and just haven't got around to finding out. So if you bought a dead tree book and have now decided audio will make it easier for you to start/finish I would count it.
I definitely want to hit the 50+ owned books read. It seems silly/wasteful/slacker-esque to acquire a book and make no attempt to read it.

One serious problemm with that is we still have 2 weeks left to do more hoarding...or maybe that was your goal...is Amazon slipping you envelopes full of cash when we aren't looking?

But thankfully for all my many kindle books, they have dates purchased in my account! That will be very helpful!

I failed at shrinking my list. Oops.

The only way the number of books owns matters is for the 500 point bonus of having fewer unread than you do at the start of the year.

"Read with a cup of tea or coffee -5 points/book"
My brain told me that means I'd get minus points for tea, and I thought that's it, I'm not going to get any points at all!
Are we keeping score in this thread? I think I'm going to make myself a spreadsheet.

I have visions of hours at the computer... They're lovely.

Omnibus editions are going to be big ticket items. Jump Gate Twist is 750 pages with extras (150 points), and I've owned it since new, which is almost 8 years now. Since 8 is closer to 10 than it is to 5, that's another 150 points. It comprises the first two books in a series, too (15 points). By an author I've never read (10 points.) That's 325 points by itself! Oh boy!
Man, I almost read it this year as one of my two "J" books, too. Ha!

I also have The Great Book of Amber omnibus which has 10 books in it and is 1300 pages long, which I've also had for 8-9 years. I didn't like the first book so I set it aside, but maybe I'll read it just for the points. So many points.
I think the series list should be updated, too. Maybe add 5 points for each subsequent book in the series?

Becomes
1 - 5 pts
2 - 10
3 - 15
4 - 20
5 - 25
...etc.

Also, just finished counting my TBR books. Total of 314 includes paper, audio and kindle. I didn’t count research books; cookbooks, garden books, travel, or game books, how-to’s, or spiritual books.
I was surprised about how few books I want to actually sit down and read that I have!

I also marked unread some scifi I've read before, but I was so young I didn't really understand anything and can't remember much, so I don't think they count as re-reads. And I'm going to read the original English editions for all the ones that are translated, but I'll count them anyway.

This challenge will run from 1/1/18-12/31/18 and will work in tandem with any other challenge or anything you're reading. You claim points if you own the book in print, on ebook, or on audio prior to 12/31/17, and you read them in 2018. Make sure you count the number of owned books you have so you know if you get that big, fat, juicy bonus at the end of the year.
At the end of the year everyone will give us the total number of points they earned as well as the points divided by the number of books. Reading a majority of owned books will result in a high average number of points.
