Sarah | 3915 comments Buried Alive! - Owned Books Challenge

This challenge will run from 1/1/18-12/31/18 and will work in tandem with any other challenge or anything you're reading. You claim points if you own the book in print, on ebook, or on audio prior to 12/31/17, and you read them in 2018. Make sure you count the number of owned books you have so you know if you get that big, fat, juicy bonus at the end of the year.

At the end of the year everyone will give us the total number of points they earned as well as the points divided by the number of books. Reading a majority of owned books will result in a high average number of points.

Hillary Major | 127 comments Great challenge!

I'm going to be crap on estimating when I bought a book if I've had it more than a year or so. On the other hand, I know I've preordered at least a couple of 2018 books, which should rack me up some "other" points. (I'm assuming the challenge is to read the books we ALREADY own, not to increase our book-buying in the new year -- which could be dangerous, so I suppose those preorders will be only 2018 books or purchases I count toward this challenge. On the up side, that means instead of counting all my unread books, I can just keep track of whether I read any new buys to find out the ratio to see if I make the bonus.)

It looks like the big money is in series -- maybe I'll finally get around to Michelle West's Sun Sword books.

Seaby Brown | 6 comments Ummmm.... how many points for this library?

http://www.librarything.com/profile/c...

That's slightly over 10,000 volumes that my husband and I jointly own that we (mostly he) collected for decades...

Tina (teanah) | 55 comments this is exactly the perfect challenge I've been looking for. I love that it goes along with whatever other challenges I'm working on. I really want to get these books I already own read and out of my house/e-reader. I've got some shelves to organize :)

thanks for putting this one together.

I decided to be pragmatic and just track what I buy and what I read :) I can't possibly count all of my audio and ebooks.

You get points if you own it prior to 12/31/17. Or for pre-orders that were ordered before that.

CBRetriever | 6102 comments 4 bookcases of cookbooks
4 of these book cases full of Paperbacks (IKEA Billy 6 shelf 32" wide units)
2 of these book cases full of HBs (IKEA Billy 16" wide 5 shelf units)

1329 Kindle Books on one account and 61 on another account plus approx 200 Docs on my Kindle

This is gonna be a long term project to total them up point wise.

Define read in terms of cookbooks please, as i might not have read every single recipe in a book (I don't like liver, peanut butter or pickles so I didn't read those recipes).

message 11: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl (cherylllr) Yes, please, define read. I abandon books easily, but if starting to read it & then giving it a DNF gets it off my shelf, I count that as a win. Question is, do you?

message 12: by Bill's (new)

Bill's Chaos (wburris) liver peanut butter pickle sandwich

message 13: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl (cherylllr) Um, CBRetriever, I think you might be misunderstanding?
You're going to get points for the books that you will be reading through 2018.

message 14: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 3915 comments I think it's really going to be what you guys are comfortable with. I also DNF from time to time. I'd probably pick the number of points it was eligible for and then just use the percentage of book read to get points. Like if it's 10 points and I read 20% I'd give myself 2.

I would just suggest doing what is fun for you and helps you get through what you own.

CBRetriever | 6102 comments Cheryl wrote: "Um, CBRetriever, I think you might be misunderstanding?

I got that, it's that a lot of those books are unread depending on the definition of read and they were definitely purchased before the deadline:

"You claim points if you own the book in print, on ebook, or on audio prior to 12/31/17, and you read them in 2018."

It's the DTBs that are the problem as I'll have to go through them to find the ones I haven't read like:

Vietnam: A History in HB which I received as a present back in the early 70s and haven't yet read. Maybe I'll finally make it through that one
and
Italian Folktales which was another present

message 17: by Cheryl (last edited Dec 14, 2017 07:45PM) (new)

Cheryl (cherylllr) Heh. I guess, in my case, I wouldn't even consider cookbooks, and I don't get books as gifts, nor do I hold onto them if I'm not interested. And I'm only counting DTBs, myself. We're all different, so it's fun!

Defining 'read' by a percentage, where applicable, works for me. I'll figure something fair out for the others, too. Thank you both for helping me think through issues!

message 18: by Bill (new)

Bill | 197 comments Do we need to make a list prior to the challenge or can we add as we read them?

message 19: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 3915 comments You get to add them as you go. I'm planning on choosing a book and then seeing how many points I can get with it.

in my case it depends on who gave me the book and how often they visit or if, in the case of the fairy tales, the person is my husband....

and then there were those fancy bound book club classic books....

Rachel | 1405 comments Oh this looks fun and different!! I’m excited- I’ll get these old Hugo winners read!!

message 22: by Meghan (last edited Dec 16, 2017 06:16AM) (new)

Meghan | 9 comments Ok this looks like fun. I've pretty much stopped buying books, and nowadays read library books. However, I have shelves of books, acquired years ago and many never really read (too many years of bad reading habits as a grad student). So if I understand the challenge correctly, any of my owned books (all bought pre-2017) will qualify, if I read them in 2018. Here's a question: I'm currently doing a lot of audiobook reading. If I own a book in print, but then listen to it as an audiobook, can I count it as owned & read?

This challenge will also motivate me to finish cataloging all my owned DTBs in LibraryThing. Hooray x 2!

message 23: by Trike (new)

Trike I uploaded this photo in April 2013. I already owned most of those books for years and have only bought more. Plus twice as many in ebook.

I kinda think I've pre-won this. :p

Yep, it's for print, ebook, and audio. There's even a 25 point bonus if you do at least one in all three formats.

Trike wrote: "I kinda think I've pre-won this. :p..."

Well, you do have to read them.

message 25: by Maxine (new)

Maxine Robinson Ooh I like this, thank you sir much for putting together an awesome challenge. Next year I’m really hoping to make a decent dent in the books I already own and i love a competition, so yay!

Sorry to be a bit dense but just to super clarify, if I read an audiobook I DON'T own with the same title/author as a print book I DO own but WON'T read in paper, this still counts as reading something I own? I'm thinking maybe not?

message 27: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 3915 comments I hadn't thought of it so I'm not sure. I would stick with the idea of not spending money on anything but I think its entirely up to you. There's going to be a lot of personal opinions and judgment going into this, I think.

message 28: by Anna (new)

Anna (vegfic) | 10434 comments I was going to ask the same question. I own two paperbacks of Tales from Earthsea and I just bought the audiobook. I've read the ebook, but haven't read either of the paperbacks. So to get points for those (I'm thinking of this as purely a physical books challenge), I would have to actually pick up the paperback? But do re-reads even count? I'd think not.

Anyway, thank you! I'm going to use this to try and motivate myself to read some of my unread physical books. I already checked that many of them are available from the library as ebooks or e-audios, so I might choose those instead, but as long as I'm reading things I've bought years ago, I'm happy.

I sort of view this challange as encouraging me to read the books I thought were going to be good at one time and just haven't got around to finding out. So if you bought a dead tree book and have now decided audio will make it easier for you to start/finish I would count it.

I definitely want to hit the 50+ owned books read. It seems silly/wasteful/slacker-esque to acquire a book and make no attempt to read it.

message 32: by Hank (new)

Hank (hankenstein) | 1230 comments Sarah Anne wrote: "You get points if you own it prior to 12/31/17. Or for pre-orders that were ordered before that."

One serious problemm with that is we still have 2 weeks left to do more hoarding...or maybe that was your goal...is Amazon slipping you envelopes full of cash when we aren't looking?

message 33: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 3915 comments Yeah, I kinda already did that one, Hank... I had an audiobook in my Amazon cart that I've wanted for months. Well, I own it now ;)

message 34: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 3915 comments I would do this challenge any way that works for you. I've been debating about rereads myself. We're doing Touch in Jan so it would be points for it being a group read, but it's like my fourth read. If I don't count it then it will bring my year end average down...

Kristin B. Bodreau (krissy22247) | 726 comments This should be interesting. I don't have a ton of DTB's. But I'll try to clear some out. I'll be totally guessing on the dates of those.

message 36: by Amanda (new)

Amanda | 53 comments At the end of the year, are we dividing the points by the number of books read or the total number of books owned?

message 37: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 3915 comments We divide the total number of points by the total number books we read in 2018.

The only way the number of books owns matters is for the 500 point bonus of having fewer unread than you do at the start of the year.

message 38: by Rachel (new)

Rachel | 1405 comments So all we have to do is not add or buy any books in 2018 haha

message 39: by Anna (last edited Dec 15, 2017 12:17PM) (new)

Anna (vegfic) | 10434 comments Haha, I was looking at the points list and the last one caught my eye:

"Read with a cup of tea or coffee -5 points/book"

My brain told me that means I'd get minus points for tea, and I thought that's it, I'm not going to get any points at all!

Are we keeping score in this thread? I think I'm going to make myself a spreadsheet.

message 40: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 3915 comments I think I'm going to say "Hey, look how many points this book got me!" but then do official tracking on my own. I have to track what I buy and read because I can't possibly count all of my audio and ebooks.

message 41: by Anna (new)

Anna (vegfic) | 10434 comments Ooh, I just realized, if I add all of my owned (physical) books to a spreadsheet and fill in the points data, then I can sneakily motivate myself to read some of them based on maximum points! I can do this because I have so few physical books, but I'm sure most people would have to spend all year typing.

message 42: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 3915 comments Yes! That would be really cool. As a nerd I think it would be a blast to research all of that info, too.

I have visions of hours at the computer... They're lovely.

message 43: by Trike (new)

Trike As you can see in the photo link I posted, I have "oops, bought it twice" sewed up. Hard Spell clearly intrigued me twice.

Omnibus editions are going to be big ticket items. Jump Gate Twist is 750 pages with extras (150 points), and I've owned it since new, which is almost 8 years now. Since 8 is closer to 10 than it is to 5, that's another 150 points. It comprises the first two books in a series, too (15 points). By an author I've never read (10 points.) That's 325 points by itself! Oh boy!

Man, I almost read it this year as one of my two "J" books, too. Ha!

message 44: by Anna (new)

Anna (vegfic) | 10434 comments Yeah I'm already taking this onto a dangerous level. I mean I'm thinking about BUYING some books to get those sweet points.

message 45: by Rachel (new)

Rachel | 1405 comments Ha yeah I have oops bought twice for a Hugo winner ; the diamond age!

message 46: by Trike (new)

Trike Anna wrote: "Yeah I'm already taking this onto a dangerous level. I mean I'm thinking about BUYING some books to get those sweet points."

I also have The Great Book of Amber omnibus which has 10 books in it and is 1300 pages long, which I've also had for 8-9 years. I didn't like the first book so I set it aside, but maybe I'll read it just for the points. So many points.

I think the series list should be updated, too. Maybe add 5 points for each subsequent book in the series?

Sarah Anne wrote: "
First book in a series - 5 points
Second, or any subsequent book in a series - 10 points
Fifth book in a series - 20 points
Tenth book in a series - 30 points
Finish a series - 15 points"

Becomes
1 - 5 pts
2 - 10
3 - 15
4 - 20
5 - 25
...etc.

message 47: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 3915 comments Umm... the second one there says the second, or any subsequent book in the series.

message 48: by CBRetriever (new)

CBRetriever | 6102 comments and what about series that continue on? Mystery series often go on and on and on with a new complete book coming out every year or so...

message 49: by Patricia (new)

Patricia | 38 comments I read this as each book in a series is 5 points. So, if you read say, 4 books in a series it’s a total of 20 points and as you continue the series you just add 5 points for each book. Am I way off on this?
Also, just finished counting my TBR books. Total of 314 includes paper, audio and kindle. I didn’t count research books; cookbooks, garden books, travel, or game books, how-to’s, or spiritual books.
I was surprised about how few books I want to actually sit down and read that I have!

message 50: by Anna (new)

Anna (vegfic) | 10434 comments So I went through my shelves and I can't believe there are only 54 unread books! I thought there were more, but it seems the majority of the books I've kept are ones I've already read and liked enough to keep through several "everything must go" purges. Of the 54 I think the majority are books my Mom has given me, and honestly I have no interest in them whatsoever. But there are several that actually sound interesting and I'd forgotten I had them.

I also marked unread some scifi I've read before, but I was so young I didn't really understand anything and can't remember much, so I don't think they count as re-reads. And I'm going to read the original English editions for all the ones that are translated, but I'll count them anyway.
