I read a book in grade school (late 70s, early 80s) but I think it was an older book. The story was about a tomboy who writes the class play about a king. She intends to play the part of the king but is cast as the princess instead. She has to wear a pink dress and maybe develops a crush on the boy who ends up in the role of the king.

No, I don't remember the cover or location. For time, I would guess the 50s, but that's a guess. I think her name might have been Sara. That causes problems when I try to search for it because most results are for A Little Princess. Good book but not the one I'm searching for.
This book is too recent, but I'll mention it just in case you're interested - Marty McGuire by Kate Messner.
Sara: The Story of a Girl Who Falls in Love with the Theater by Louise Lee Floethe? Sara is twelve, just beginning to accept her feminine role. She has always been the class playwright— and is again, but has to cede the role of the king to the detested Norton. Sara finds that Norton thinks of her as a girl . . . and reluctantly she admits to herself that he has brains and charm. Set in New York in 1925, the story has period and background interest.
