I thought the same thing! Wasn't he 25 when it was first published? Unbelievable! I have I Am the Messenger on my TBR list and will get to it soon.

Shelli Divergent....really great YA that I would highly recommend!

Angela (bookangel2) | 220 comments Finished In Cold Blood last night. A brilliant, if chilling, book!

message 804: by Doug (new)

Doug Bradshaw Angela, it really took you right right there, didn't it? It took me a while to get it out of my head.

I read it years and years ago, and still remember how chilling it was...another book that really stayed with and freaked me out was The Stranger Beside Me: Ted Bundy The Shocking Inside Story....I still get a little freaked when walking in the state park alone....especially if I see a normal looking guy on a bike!!!

Angela (bookangel2) | 220 comments I don't usually read "true crime" books, although, strangely enough I love thrillers and mystery.I'm so glad I read In Cold Blood: A True Account of a Multiple Murder and Its Consequences though - the writing was superb.

message 807: by Shelli (new)

Shelli Sunshine...I really liked it.

message 808: by Diane (new)

Diane (dianedj) Rules of Civility by Amor Towles - by far my favorite book of 2011. It's like stepping back in time to New York of the 1930's. I felt like I was part of all the characters' inner circle. This is a book I will re-read a couple of times I'm sure.

message 809: by Clementine (new)

Clementine (silentreverie) | 5 comments It's a pity I've just read Looking for Alaska yesterday. I should have bought that book earlier. I'm late, I know, I know.

But I love it. So much.

Doug Bradshaw I finished River of Smoke and it is one of the most remarkable works of historical fiction I have read. I place it a touch above "Master and Commander" which is saying a lot. Now, I'm on to Tatiana and Alexander which is the follow up book to The Bronze Horseman, a great read, but certainly not quite in the lofty sphere of River of Smoke.

Angela (bookangel2) | 220 comments I finished Winter in Madrid yesterday. A very good book; C.J. Sansom creates atmosphere and characters so well.

River of Smoke looks very good - another addition to my huge TBR list, I think!

Doug....this has really made me want to get to Sea of Poppies early in 2012....I started Tatiana and Alexander because I loved The Bronze Horseman.....you won't believe it....I never do this....I got frustrated and went to about 100 pages from the end and started reading there!!! I cheated! I never went back and finished either!!!

message 818: by Jannene (new)

Jannene I just finished Smokin' Seventeen (Stephanie Plum, #17) by Janet Evanovich . This book was so much better than the previous. I was dreading reading this book because the previous ones weren't as good as te earlier ones. This was great and I loved the story line. I laughed many times like I did with the earlier books. I was pleasantly surprised.

Shelli Finished A Storm of Swords...loved it!

I'm 3/4 of the way through it & dying to finish it. I'm hoping to get in quality reading time, but keep tripping over family.

;-)

message 821: by Shelli (new)

Shelli Jim...I hope you get some reading time over the Holidays! It seemed to go a lot quicker than the first two for me!

message 822: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) I'll get in some time this morning. I got woken up at 4:25am by the power going out. Our UPS's were beeping. All the neighbors to the south still had power, so I got dressed & checked outside at the pole. The neighbors to the north had no power, so I called it in. I had just laid back down when the power came on. Got up, turned off the few lights & went back to bed. A few minutes later & the phone rang. It was the power company asking if our power was back on. Yes! Thanks! But there is no way I can go back to sleep now.

message 823: by Shelli (new)

Shelli Wow....what a morning....hope you weren't too tired to read!!!

message 824: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) No, I actually got in a couple of hours before going out to the shop. I'm a morning person & that's my normal time to get up for work. I just got to bed kind of late last night (a little after 10pm) & was looking forward to sleeping in some.

message 825: by Doug (new)

Doug Bradshaw Jim, a little after 10:00 is late? You're becoming a dang geezer.

message 826: by Doug (new)

Doug Bradshaw I just finished Tatiana and Alexander. Tougher read for me than Bronze Horseman but I'm glad I read it. Aren't you glad you weren't a Russian or German in the second world war?

message 827: by Shelli (new)

Shelli Yes!! I finished Nefertiti a few days ago.....really good! I also finished At Grave's End which was a bit raunchy in the beginning, but the story picked up about halfway through!!

message 828: by Shelli (new)

Shelli I finished The Greatest Knight...in a word...Fantastic!!!

message 829: by Jannene (new)

Jannene I just finished The Son of Neptune (Heroes of Olympus, #2) by Rick Riordan . I loved this book. It had a great story and I love how well thought out it seemed to be. I adored the characters and the conflict that they had to endure.

Jim....did you ever finish this? How did you like it?

message 831: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) I finished both A Storm of Swords & it was great. Then I read the 4th & 5th - not happy. They were good, but the story has gotten so big that Martin split one book into 2. Especially the last one just didn't seem to go anywhere. If you look at the status of the characters at the beginning & ends of the book, then look at the 1000 pages in between, you realize it was kind of a waste of time. Too much trivia, not enough story advancement.

My reviews are here in order #3 - 5.

Wow Jim...I'll have to check these out!

Angela (bookangel2) | 220 comments I finished Rivers of London by Ben Aaronovitch a couple of days ago. I really enjoyed the mixture of crime and the supernatural - well worth reading!

message 835: by Jannene (new)

Jannene I just finished O is for Outlaw (Kinsey Millhone, #15) by Sue Grafton . I enjoyed this book. The background of Kinsey's first marriage was a twist. I felt sad at the end but love how she ties everything up in a bow. There is no guessing what happened.

message 836: by Shelli (new)

Shelli Saving CeeCee Honeycutt...really enjoyed it.

message 837: by Jannene (new)

Jannene I just finished Fatal Voyage (Temperance Brennan, #4) by Kathy Reichs . I couldn't put this book down. I stayed up until 12:30 am hoping to finish it. I called it quits and woke up early to finish it. The book immediately sucked me in. I had to keep reading to see what was going on and why Tempe was in so much trouble. It was a very suspenseful book and I had no idea how it was going to end.

message 838: by Shelli (new)

Shelli The Night Circus....great!!

message 839: by David (new)

David Riddley Walker, a novel without hope or god, though surprisingly upbeat, and reading it was like reading Chaucer in the original though I don't like to show off :). A very earthy language, better than Burgess's in A Clockwork Orange and full of touching nuances. It's bleak but gives you a sense of what it must be like to be completely alone but at the same time clinging to something, even if you don't know what that something is... Clutching at straws, and desperate...

message 840: by Karen (new)

Karen (kazzakrisanna) Just finished 11/22/63 by Stephen King and absolutely loved it

message 841: by Jannene (new)

Jannene I just finished Heat Rises (Nikki Heat, #3) by Richard Castle . Again another wonderful book in this series. I loved it. During some of the action packed scenes I visualized myself as Nikki running and trying to figure a way out of those situations. The ending, well, that was just plain sad.

message 842: by Shelli (new)

Shelli The Secret History....3 stars.

I loved this too!!

message 846: by Doug (new)

Doug Bradshaw Lorena and Shelli, do we know if there's a follow-up book or a movie coming? Right now when I get people asking what book to read, it's my first book to mention. Kind of a fresh type of writing. Very enjoyable.

message 847: by Shelli (new)

Shelli I heard there is going to be a movie...not sure about another book.

message 848: by Doug (new)

Doug Bradshaw The The Winter Rose was a great read. Kind of long, but worth it. It is not really a follow-up book. It stands on its own although there are characters from the first book. Have any of you read the third?

message 849: by Karen (new)

Karen (kazzakrisanna) Just finished That Which Should Not Be by Brett J. Talley Very good read for anyone who enjoys Lovecraftian horror, I loved it!!!

message 850: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) I just finished The Gun Seller by Hugh Laurie - Dr. House, himself. Fabulous! My review is here:
