Loved Less Than Zero! Such a good book! Definitely one of his best.

message 703: by Nadia (new)

Nadia A (bagambo) Just finished A Visit from the Goon Squad and loved it! Such a good read - definitely can see why it won the Pulitzer. And I also just finished Bossypants and it was a funny read - wasn't wowed by it, but definitely enjoyed it.

Shelli The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle....strange, but interesting and compelling.

Wake....quick and unique...started it one day...finished the next.

message 705: by Laura (new)

Laura | 1 comments Ravens by George Dawes Green, really slow-paced and not a lot happened but it was beautifully written. I usually drop books a few chapters in if nothing happens but I loved this :)

Susan I just finished The Spellman Files by Lisa Lutz and loved it!! Can't wait to read the rest of this series!!

Kara (karasmannequin) | 2 comments I just finished Russian Winter by Daphne Kalotay. And Sisterhood Everlasting by Anne Brascheres (sp)? They're
both fantastic.

message 719: by Diane (new)

Diane (dianedj) Kara, I read Russian Winter quite a few months ago and I loved it too!

message 720: by Nikki (new)

Nikki (nkua) | 3 comments I just finished reading The Art of Racing in the Rain and I loved it. The story was from the point of view of a dog and I loved how witty and philosophical Enzo (the dog) was. What he felt, I felt as well. I had this feeling of watching a movie while reading the book. When I wasn't reading, I couldn't wait to find out what happens next.

message 721: by Diane (new)

Diane (dianedj) Nikki, glad you loved the "Enzo book" :) One of my all-time favorites!!

April Just finished The Thirteenth Tale. It is amazing!

message 724: by Doug (new)

Doug Bradshaw Sarah wrote: "I finished Slammerkin the other day and really enjoyed it."

Slammerkin was a little lugubrious for me. Her writing is excellent.

message 725: by Shelli (new)

Shelli You just love to say that word...lol!!

message 726: by Doug (new)

Doug Bradshaw LOL. You are so correct, Shelli. Makes me feel less lugubrious.

message 727: by Nikki (new)

Nikki (nkua) | 3 comments I finished the book, "The Last Summer (of You and Me)" by Ann Brashares. While reading the book, I felt bittersweet. And I loved the characters and how conflicted they are!

message 728: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) I finished Wilderness today & it was fantastic. "Wilderness" is a western about 2 early mountain men; John Colter and Hugh Glass. These are fictionalized accounts but firmly based on the historical facts. The book alternates chapters, starting with Colter & then switching to Glass. Zelazny obviously wrote in the dream scenes which highlight the incredible stress of the situation & the determination of the men who managed to survive them against all odds.

Colter is known for his infamous run from 100 Indians in 1808, while Glass is known for surviving a bear attack almost 2 decades later & then making his way back to civilization after being stripped & left for dead by his companions who were sure he was about to die. Their stories are stranger than fiction & I find it amusing that the fictionalized account is actually tamer in some ways than the true stories. That any humans could have done what they did is just incredible.

My review is here:

Sounds like a great book. I tried to befriend you but wasn't smart enough to come up with the right answer

message 730: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Thanks, Doug. I thought any answer except 'no' would do. 'Yes' is perfect. I sent you a friend request.
;-)
(My friending question is "Do we share books in common?" or something like that.)

"Wilderness" was great. One of the underlying themes is 'truth', done in a way that only Zelazny could pull off.

message 731: by Doug (new)

Doug Bradshaw Jim, I had answered that we have 46 books in common with an 80% match and that I had joined this book club. The answer I received was this wasn't an adequate answer. LOL.

message 732: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) I'm sorry I had to put in a question at all, but I kept getting friend invites from young, mid eastern young ladies who were apparently enthralled by me. Since putting in that question, I haven't gotten any more. Makes me think that maybe they weren't real. Can you imagine?!!!
;-)

message 733: by Shelli (new)

message 737: by Shelli (new)

Shelli Will do!

message 738: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) I just finished Synergy by M.D. Benoit. It was a really good SF thriller & way different than her previous novel that I'd read. She reminds me of Harry Harrison, kind of. I don't often see that sort of range in an author any more.

It was long....however, I listened to it and took my time....2 months almost....I found it was a bit overly wordy in spots, but overall I really enjoyed it.....I never lost interest.

I loved the other two books but just could not get into the third book. I'm giving it some time and thinking I might go back later and read it.
