Tracy Torres Hello, readers!

My name is Maria, and I am from a small town in southern Pennsylvania, USA. I like to read almost anything, but my favorites are books involving magic or history (or both!). I also really like to read biographies because I have a weird interest in knowing about the lives of people throughout history. I found the group in search of a way to read books with other people and discuss thoughts and feelings about it. I also really want to diversify my reading this year. I have a reading goal of 50 books, but I have already read 5 books so far, so hopefully, I can read more, but we will see!

Looking forward to getting to know you all!

I have indeed found a couple of books that have blended magic and history well. I particularly remember loving A Shadow Bright and Burning by Jessica Cluess.

Thank you for the warm welcome! I am really enjoying discovering all of the threads in this group.

message 1006: by Dawn (last edited Jan 17, 2018 04:25PM) (new)

Dawn Hello! I am just another avid reader living here in Charlotte, Michigan, USA. I also enjoy audio-books and I read about 98% as E-readers, usually Kindle. No hate on the other software, I just happened to go to Kindle first, so that is the one I know best. I belong to a book club in real life and enjoy our monthly meetings very much.
I am taking this challenge to increase my reading genre. I tend to get stuck in a rut and read the same type of book over and over. However; one guilty pleasure that I am not willing to give up is that every summer - I re-read (audio) the entire Harry Potter series. Our library has shorter hours and doing this gets me through the summer without my usual infusion of audio books. I average 5 audio books a month and three hand held (e-books) in that same month. I love sci-fi (minus dystopian, not a fan of gloom and doom) also enjoy a good mystery, history, biography/ autobio/ memoirs, and even young adult lit. I don't do spooky horror scary books. Books with a happy ending are awesome, but books that you hate to see end are even better.
I have two adult children, three adult granddaughters, three young great grandsons and one beautiful long term loving partner. Looking for getting ideas and seeing other opinions from all of you.

Blagica | 12943 comments Hi Dawn welcome I am so happy to have you join our group. I see that you have a very elastic taste in books and that is fantastic you will fit right in. I have yet to find a book club in my area and have fallen in love with listening to books in the last few months. Have you decided on how many books you will read or listen to in 2018? We have a great number of things to join, if you have questions or need anything let us know. Happy reading and best of luck with your reading endeavors this year.

Katie (littlelistmaker) | 61 comments Hi everyone! I'm Katie, and I'm really excited to have found such an active and encouraging group! I've signed up for a few challenges this year, but I really appreciate how open-ended this one is. I recently completed a master's in public administration, and now that grad school is done I finally feel like I should make a much bigger effort in my reading for leisure. I own so many books I have never read! Most of my TBR list is historical nonfiction, classical literature, or political science-related, which does not typically work well with structured challenges. My reading goal is starting pretty low, at 25 books, but I hope to go well beyond my goal. Just trying to be realistic! I look forward to getting to know people here.

Kadijah Michelle (kadmich) | 2176 comments Hello all!

Robbin and Maria! What's up neighbors? How are you enjoying the snow? I hope you love living in South Central PA as much as I do!

As always, I am overwhelmed by how international our group has become, and every time I log in, I can't believe how many members from India join our group. Goodreads must be very popular there. I'm very interested in knowing what the reading cannon is there because I'm sure it is much broader than the Western reading cannon. I'm married to a Palestinian and my best friend is Punjabi, so I've been fortunate to expand my reading horizons just from knowing them...I would love to expand them even more from knowing all of you! Welcome to the group! Please let us know your favorite books from your local cannon.

To all of our new members, I hope you find something in this group that will challenge you to become a better reader.

Thank you for your message, Suzy. I'm receiving individual notifications, but think I'll change that te digest. I'll try to take part in the turning pages group (I've kept track of the number of pages I've read for several years now) and the ABC group.
I plan to read at least 70 books, bur probably that number will be increased.
There isn't always so much time to read, because I'm also a weaver (hence my 'weaverannie' name), spinner, dye fibers and yarn, make bobbin lace, knit and do a few other crafty things. Many of them I teach, so I'm kept busy.

Spicedmama Where are you from? I am in North Carolina.

What kinds of books do you like to read? I like a wide variety of topics, however, due to limited time I have resorted to listening to audiobooks during my daily commute to/from work and all in between. So far, so good.

How did you find our group? Tooling/Fooling around on Good Reads.

What's your reading goal? This year I set it for 15 books, but will more than likely up the goal because listening to audiobooks is a faster way to "read."

message 1032: by Hanča (new)

Hanča (citron) | 94 comments Hi, I'm Hana from Prague, Czech republic.
I just found this group today while browsing on random people's profiles. To be honest I am usually not super active group member, especially if it's a giant group like this one, because the number of posts is just overwhelming. But I decided to give it a try anyways, I am especially interested in the buddy reads (last year I tried to find me a buddy and didn't know where to turn to).

I've been going through a massive reading slump for years while in Uni, I basically went from reading over hundred books to reading maybe 5 in a whole year, but finding goodreads, booktube and the community as a whole really helped me go from around 20 books (in 2014) to 60 books in the last years challenge. This year I put my goal to 40 books just to be on the safe side. Don't want to stress too much :).

I used to be a huge fantasy reader and I still ocasionally read fantasy/sci-fi, but more often from the YA genre, even tho I am not in the age group anymore for a few years (sue me :D). I read a lot of contemporary, but I'm trying to reach out to other genres as well. One day I want to read a book from every country in the world, but I am not working on this challenge for real tbh. It's more of a bucket list thing.

Shout out to those who read till the end :D

TLDR: Hana, 25, Czechia, YA, fantasy, here for the buddy reads.

Welcome Spicedmama!
How I wish I could listen to audiobooks! That would certainly help me get more books read. But (maybe because English isn't my first language) I can't concentrate on what they're saying, often don't even know what they're saying but most books I'm interested in aren't available in Dutch...

Welcome to the group Hanca! (I don't know how to write the right "c", sorry....

Buddy reads, I looove buddy reads!
Have a look at the buddy reads that are planned for this year:
https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...#
And if you want to suggest a book for a buddy read, you can do that here:
https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...
We also do twin reads where you get paired with 1 other member and you choose a book that is on both your TBR lists. You can sign up for February here:
https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...
And here are some general rules and questions about twin reads:
https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

Same here!
For me, joining this group in 2017 was a real help to get back into reading after a reading slump of many years. I started out with a tentative goal of 12 books, upped it to 24 during the year and ended up reading 46 books!!! All thanks to this group, the great challenges, the awesome group and buddy reads and last but certainly not least, the amazing group members who were always supportive, motivating and encouraging. I hope you'll have a similar experience.

I used to be a huge fantasy reader and I still ocasionally read fantasy/sci-fi, but more often from the YA genre, even tho I am not in the age group anymore for a few years (sue me :D).

I think everybody should read what he or she enjoys most so no, I won't sue you lol
Besides I think YA can be interesting for all ages (including mine ;p)

I read a lot of contemporary, but I'm trying to reach out to other genres as well. One day I want to read a book from every country in the world, but I am not working on this challenge for real tbh. It's more of a bucket list thing.

Shout out to those who read till the end :D

Shout back lol

TLDR: Hana, 25, Czechia, YA, fantasy, here for the buddy reads. "

Hope to see you at some of the buddy reads!
Have fun and if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask!!

Kaitlyn (wizardkait) | 3 comments Hi everyone! My names Kaitlyn and I'm from New Mexico. I love reading from a lot of different genres like dystopian, fantasy, history, YA, thriller, horror, etc.
I am new to Goodreads and wanted to join some groups to maybe make some friends and discuss our love for books as a lot of people around me don't read or find it boring. But I realized how many books are out there and couldn't help but be really excited to read as much I can. My current main interests in fantasy and history because I love the surrealism both of them that come from a new world and what use to be our world.
My current reading goal is 50 books because I want to make a dent in the number of books I own ^^;
Of course, I hope to surpass that goal and read as much as I can while developing better habits to read and enjoy the books I read.
I hope we all reach our goals and it's nice to meet all of you!
