Really? Odd, its not showing up for me. Guess its weird all around since we got such a convivial post on our group board. Oys!

wosedwew | 440 comments Very strange -- I'll check in the morning after I boot up

Oh, just thought of something that might explain why I can't see it anymore. I did block this account from ever friending my account. Maybe that blocks me from seeing any of their posts, too. That could be problematic if they ever try to post here again though I removed them as a member. Oh well. I know a couple of us put in a flag to GR so hopefully that will do the trick.

I just checked and I don't see it anymore either -- thanks GR Librarians!

Whew! That relieves me. I want this group to be a safe haven from that sort of stuff.

Renske Bakkenes (RenskeBakkenes) Heey everyone!

I am studying literature and I am writing a paper about censorship and fanfiction.

For this subject I want to review some fanfictions (online) from Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice. I want to look for fanfictions that are controversial en maybe even banned or cesored on a platform (which means you usally can find it on another platform)

Anyone got ideas?
maybe want to discuss with me about it?

Lots of love

message 209: by Debbie (new)

Debbie (dmbrown) | 1246 comments I wasn't aware that fanfiction sites practiced censorship at all, Renske. I feel like they usually have some kind of author-suggested rating that precedes a posted story warning if there's "mature" content, but it's news to me that stories ever get removed. I'll be interested to see what you find, but I'm afraid I wouldn't be any help on the subject.

message 210: by J. W. (new)

J. W. Garrett (jeannewallacegarrett) | 1376 comments I have also responded on your other posting.

It is not within our purview to censor or ban fanfiction. We, the reader, only see what a site has posted or what books have been offered to the public. If you are referring to unpublished work on the fanfiction sites, you would need to speak to the moderators of a site and ask them what their posting policies are.

Most sites have a section that lists what they require from authors. I do know that some sites are sensitive and request that authors not post stories that display abuse to children. Perhaps this is what you are seeking? Again, you would have to go to each site and check out their posting requirements.

Good luck with your paper.

It depends on what you mean by censorship. Some sites restrict postings to stories rated PG13 or less, so no graphic sex, and they request that you post warnings for certain things that occur in your story. They also restrict frequency of postings in order to allow every author’s story time to be seen. Other sites restrict stories that include sex outside the norm or ones that are overly political. Their posting rules are made quite clear, so I’m not certain that restricting or removing stories that violate their clearly stated terms constitutes censorship.

It might help if you could better define what you mean by censorship.

I rec'd this message and appreciate the heads up that Shelley wished to share with everyone. I don't personally use Apple products, but good to know for those who do.

I just wanted to get it out there if people are using an iPad not to update to ios12.0
I updated my iPad from 11 to 12ios and lost all of my pdf files and documents. All of my stories that I saved! This is a big problem with apple. My pdf files that I thought was in the Icloud went missing and I could not retrieve them. I have been working with apple support for weeks now. If you have an iPad with documents and pdf files do not update to 12.0.
Shelley

Thank you for letting us know. This is a very bad thing. While I have most of my .docs and .pdfs backed up on my computer, finding the specific ones I wanted to read on my iPad would be difficult. I've had this happen with kindle. I updated, and it lost all of the books I had downloaded into my phone's app. I've never gotten them all put back on. I wish the software engineers would realize that our files are important to us. I usually wait several weeks to a month to do an update on most things, to make sure any kinks are worked out. Now, I think I'll just put this update on hold for as long as I possibly can. Thank you for taking the time to let us know about this. It's very much appreciated. I'm sorry all your files were lost.

Yeah, I have the Kindle. I've never quite trusted things so I always store on an external drive after one memorable loss a few years back.

message 218: by James (new)

James S | 12 comments I read a variation years ago and can’t remember the book or author. The plot had Lydia and Kitty going to London with Wickham and Denny. The girls end up in a hospital. Anyone remember what story that might have been?

message 219: by wosedwew (new)

wosedwew | 440 comments I have read that too but can't name it now.

message 220: by Elin (new)

Elin Eriksen (vaarin) | 545 comments I haven't but I would like to. Hopefully someone else will be more helpful than me...

message 221: by wosedwew (new)

wosedwew | 440 comments James -- I copied your request to a FB group. I'll let you know if someone can identify this book.

message 222: by wosedwew (new)

wosedwew | 440 comments Several people remembered reading that scene but so far only one book mentioned:

Darcy Chooses - Part 1
Darcy Chooses - Part 2
Darcy Chooses Prequels
Darcy Chooses - The Complete Novel

I have read those but don't remember the plot well.

Here's a quote from Sheila's review:
Lydia and Kitty remain true to their colors...silly, teasing and naive. They pay dearly for their ignorance.

So … maybe?

message 223: by James (new)

James S | 12 comments Wows, thank you.

message 224: by James (new)

James S | 12 comments I’ll check out Shelia’s idea

message 225: by James (new)

James S | 12 comments ‘Carol’ posted a review mentioning the scene. Now I have to figure if I want to buy the book. Must have been a Kindle Unlimited when I read it. 🤔

message 226: by wosedwew (new)

wosedwew | 440 comments I will check Carol's review. It doesn't appear to be available at Amazon in is various parts -- just the re-issued "complete novel" which is about $10 Kindle. I agree -- I probably read it as KU

But at least we can sleep tonight without puzzling over this!

message 227: by James (new)

James S | 12 comments $10 is to steep for me. I’ll wait until Christmas and see if I receive Andy Amazon money cards in my stocking. 😀

message 228: by wosedwew (new)

wosedwew | 440 comments If you're planning to get this --
The Darcy and Elizabeth Collection: Pride and Prejudice Variations
is on sale for $4.99 until 12-11.

Blurb says it contains all the Darcy Chooses as well as The Women of Longbourn; Attending a Ball; and Elizabeth's Choice

James S | 12 comments Thanks for that info. These groups are saving me all sorts of money. 👍🏻

Marlene | 307 comments Hey, everyone! I'm very sad to realize that I do not have an e-mail showing me what my year in books has looked like! I've looked at the last four December e-mails, and I've always received them in mid-December. So.... I'm guessing that it has to do with my e-mail settings. I've played around with them to minimize what I get via e-mail. But could any of you confirm that you received yours, and if anyone knows which setting would turn off receiving that e-mail, could you let me know that? Thanks!

message 231: by Sophia (new)

Sophia (sophiarose) | 917 comments Mod
Oh, that is no fun. I can confirm that yes, I got the email some time ago. But, sadly, I'm not sure what particular setting allowed for this. Is there one specific just for GR communication to come through to you?

message 232: by Marlene (new)

Marlene | 307 comments Sophia, I clicked on "monthly newsletters" so that hopefully I'll get them in the future. I don't know for sure if that's the right one.

Is there anyone with any suggestions on how I can request the e-mail listing what I read in 2019??

message 233: by Sophia (new)

Sophia (sophiarose) | 917 comments Mod
I don't know about sending an email for the listing, but I just went to the Home page and scrolled through my friends' posts until I came across their 'year in books' and by clicking on theirs, it took me to mine. Maybe you can try that, too.

message 234: by J. W. (new)

J. W. Garrett (jeannewallacegarrett) | 1376 comments Marlene, I clicked on my profile picture and it gave me several listing below it. It had my Reading Challenge and when I clicked on it... showed my book. I hope that gives you what you wanted.

message 235: by Marlene (new)

Marlene | 307 comments Not quite what I'm looking for. Thanks, ladies. I want an e-mail in my inbox which includes the images of the books. Someone commented on my year in books on the page that has a link taking me to that page, I'm very happy to say. I'd still like the e-mail, though. Thank you and Sophia for trying! :-)

It comes in an email from GR. That's what Marlene was just asking about.
If you didn't get the email, then you will need to go to the top of the page, click 'my books', then at the top in small print on the right click 'stats', then for 2018 click 'details'. There will be a box off to the right that will break down longest read and other stats for you.
Not as cool as the email version, but the same stuff. :)
