Debbie (dmbrown) | 1246 comments Has not been on my radar, but I gather, from skimming through the GR reviews, that it's a modernization of Persuasion. Although some reviewers did like it, the negative reviews make it sound pretty scattered. It's sure not going into my TBR pile!

I see that our Abigail really liked it, based on her review. It's in my TBR pile, but I haven't gotten to it yet myself.

Loved the book, Patricia! Its a lovely heartwarming and sometimes heartbreaking story about a small piece of WWII history that isn't as well known.

i am watching youtube videos and reading directions online but still unable to figurethi s out. i am a bit hopeless when it comes to electronics

message 158: by wosedwew (new)

wosedwew | 440 comments You should be able to e-mail that Mobi file to your Kindle.

Your Kindle e-mail address is probably the e-mail you use at
Amazon with @kindle.com -- at least mine works that way.

Begin an e-mail
Address it as (example) ColbyD@kindle.com
Attach the Mobi file

Send

If you go into the settings on your kindle, you'll probably find the email to use. I think you can also find it online in your Manage Devices.

Just attach the file to the email and send it to the @kindle,com address. It will take several minutes for it to process though, but it will eventually show up. Last time I did this, it took close to half an hour for the file to show up on my Paperwhite.

message 164: by Debbie (last edited Aug 27, 2018 01:27PM) (new)

Debbie (dmbrown) | 1246 comments Ok. Let's start at the beginning, then.

From your Home page (the one listing all your books), hit the Menu key.

Scroll down to Settings and click.

Turn pages until you see the Send-to-Kindle E-Mail heading.

That's where you'll find the correct email address to send your book to.

Note that it also gives directions there that you need to go to www.amazon.com/myk to adjust your setting THERE so it will accept attachments from your usual email address.

Hope this helps.

Debbie (dmbrown) | 1246 comments Huh. Always shows up right on top for me. Is your list set to "Most Recent First"?

And, yes, I should've mentioned that it's not usually instantaneous when you email it. Sometimes takes 15-30 minutes.

Patricia | 86 comments is there an easier way to find files you download to kindle? i think i had to do this before with another book on kindle

SOS | 8 comments Patricia wrote: "is there an easier way to find files you download to kindle? i think i had to do this before with another book on kindle"

Not that I know of. Once downloaded, you might be able to put them into a collection, but I’ve never tried to do that.

message 173: by Anji (new)

Anji | 291 comments Another way to find books is to sort them either by author or title. It can still be a bit laborious to find them if, like me, you've hundreds of titles on your Kindle. I do try to make an effort to add new titles to the various collections I've set up, which are somewhat similar to the shelves I've set up here.

I don't know if you've already seen this, Patricia, but maybe this might help find some stories, too. I noticed that some of my stories were a different type of file (not Kindle .mobi) so they ended up in the Document section rather than the Book section. You can have both show by searching 'all'. Still, might be worth it to check your Document folder for books that you can't find, too.

Go to Amazon.com, your account, scroll down and click on 'Content and Devices'. Make sure you are in the 'Content' folder and at the top left it will say 'Books', but give you some arrows for other options. If you scroll down, it will include 'Docs'. Check there in documents to see if some of your other non-Amazon books show up.

Patricia | 86 comments I am reading Sir Walter takes a wife on beyond austen.com. I do not see it on goodreads.

could I still add it to my list even though I do not see it on goodreads?

message 176: by wosedwew (new)

wosedwew | 440 comments Yes, add it to your list. I always add a link to the on-line posting when I add something like that; but I think this one will be deleted soon. It is to be included in a short-story anthology later, I think.

I doubt the author wants it listed separately on GR

yeah I think I have until midnight to finish reading it.
I am liking it a lot so far!

message 178: by Anji (new)

Anji | 291 comments A question for those who read a lot more unpublished works than I do. I've very recently read Behind the Metadata Wall; a Pride & Prejudice Vignette by Lady Jaeza. It seemed familiar, as though I might have read it before, but in my memory, it was longer and had more characters from Austen and Austenesque fiction in it.

Can anyone tell me if they've read another story like that, or is my age and currently fevered (but thankfully improving) brain playing tricks on me?

message 179: by Anji (new)

Anji | 291 comments Another question. The battery on my Kindle is slowly giving up the ghost. It'll only hold charge for a couple of days now if I don't totally switch it off. I would send it off to a place I know that does excellent repairs (they did a new screen for me about three years ago) but after it took a dive out of my work bag (my own stupid fault!), it needs another new screen. It's still readable if I have the font set large enough as most of the damage is at the top. It's proably going to be cheaper to get a new one than pay for two repairs.

The model I have is one of the older ones with the keyboard at the bottom and a portrait of Jane Austen as one of the lock screen pictures and it was a birthday gift from my husband. So there are several reasons why I don't really want to replace it. However, that day is coming, probably sooner rather than later, and I was wondering what recommendations for a replacement my friends here have. I have the Kindle app on my phone and this (also elderly) iPad, so I'm not without something to read my ebooks on, but I much prefer reading on my Kindle. It's much closer to reading a real book.

So, suggestions, please?

Jack Caldwell -- Backstage at Pride & Prejudice

I had the same feeling when I read "Metadata" and searched for it.

I have and LOVE that model. I also have an Amazon Fire, which I don't like nearly as much. My original Kindle got killed by salwater (what can I say? I was reading it at the beach, went for a nice walk, and didn't realize that the tide came in so quickly while I was away from my stuff. Killed my cell phone, too!) I got a replacement of the same model using eBay, and I contacted an Amazon customer service tech, who walked me through the process of moving the content from my dead kindle to new.

eBay! Get another one!

Thanks Rose, that's the one! Just read it again - it's so funny. Wouldn't it be fantastic to see the cast of P&P 1995, as they were then, playing that one out? That's what I was imagining inside my fevered brain as I read it! One more to add to the list for this year. I don't think I counted it in last year's totals.

You can try going into your account to 'Manage Content and Devices' and choose the action to have it sent to specific devices. It doesn't always work and sometimes you're stuck only being able to read it on the default device when it wasn't a Kindle mobi file in the first place, but just a .mobi file that can be read on Kindle (I know that might seem confusing, but its how the file is formatted that will make the difference).

message 190: by Debbie (new)

Debbie (dmbrown) | 1246 comments Also, each device probably uses a slightly different email address. My Amazon fire has a different email address for me to send files to than my old basic Kindle. You can find what email address your device uses by checking under its Settings.

Debbie (dmbrown) | 1246 comments Oh, good grief! How did THAT get on here!

message 192: by Marlene (last edited Oct 02, 2018 10:21AM) (new)

Marlene | 307 comments Patricia wrote: "Ok so it's appear ing only on my one kindle but not the others. Not even on my phone app"

As Sophia said, sometimes it works to go to more than one device, and sometimes it does. Usually it does. I tend to have the most trouble with a doc (something I didn't get from Amazon but that I forwarded to my Kindle by e-mailing an attachment to my Kindle e-mail address).

I'd recommend pushing sync on the device that you have it, and then check your other devices. Sometimes I can't even find it with a search, so I go the list of books I have under documents rather than books, and sometimes it'll be there. Perhaps that's because it is filed under my e-mail address rather than the author, as one of the other ladies said may happen.

Hope that helps.
