Feel free to ask if you are not sure about something related to the Group, navigating GoodReads, or beyond. Anyone can respond and are encouraged to do so.

Tarissa (inthebookcase) | 6 comments For "works about the Jane Austen period", what years approximately would this cover? And does this mean other historical fiction that just happens to take place during that setting, but otherwise has nothing to do with Jane Austen?

message 3: by Abigail (new)

Abigail Bok (regency_reader) Hi, Tarissa! Designated nerd of the group here, so I’ll take a stab at your question. Jane Austen was born in 1775 and died in 1817, so those years would definitely be included! But when scholars of British history are dividing up into segments, they tend to think of 1750 to 1830 as a bloc—because of legal and economic changes that began in the second half of the 18th century and ended with the death of King George IV (the one who was Regent in the period so favored by romance writers, the Regency). So I would say that anything in that broader period should count.

All that said, this group is very loose about how any member interprets such things. Basically it’s open to your own interpretation! If it feels like Jane to you, then it’s Jane.

Great question, Tarissa!

Abigail covered the time period question and the spirit of the challenge perfectly.

I would add though that not just Regency period fiction- only if it has a feel of Austen's writing, her plots, or her characters. Hope that helps.

Tarissa (inthebookcase) | 6 comments Abigail & Sophia, THANKS!! That was sooo helpful.

I'm new to both Austen and this challenge, so I'm still figuring it all out, and deciding which of my TBR books would count. I'm excited!

Anji | 291 comments Don't know if anyone can answer this one or not. From what I've read in some threads, some the authors of unpublished fan fiction posted on websites such as fanfiction.net, dwiggie or A Happy Assembly don't want entries ceated here and/or reviews posted. How do we find out who these authors are? I'd hate to create a title and add an author here by mistake. Most of the ff I've read (which isn't much) has come from following recommendations by my friends here, but I'd also like it to count towards my overall GR Reading Challenge if possible.

This is coming from someone who doesn't visit the sites, but I did check on GR's policy about adding FF. GR's stance is that the site you are adding from must not have a registration for accessing site and the book/story you're adding has to be already complete.
Now, as to knowing who will or won't wish you to post their book on GR, I remember reading someone say that the authors have to indicate this. You would probably need to thoroughly check in the policies or rules for that site where the story is or if that author has a page or note on the story to see if they have given direction about their story.
I hope that helped a little.

Anji | 291 comments Sophia, my answer to the question you posed about tracking challenge books once read is this. Although I don't know of a way of doing it automatically a book is marked as read, I've created a shelf specifically for each year I've taken part. So this year, my shelf is called 2018 JAFF challenge and I add the book to that shelf when I mark it as read. Perhaps one of our dear friends here can come up with a better idea?

Yes, that has been my way as well and I do alright, but she is in another challenge group and I guess they have a different way. I took a look at what they were doing, but couldn't make heads or tails of it. It looked something like what people are doing in their tracker threads or what people do with creating shelves. Yeah, I have no idea how to help her. LOL

Victoria | 54 comments I have a quick question. Do re-reads count? I have a bunch of JAFF that I have read, but I never reviewed (because I read them before I joined Goodreads in 2011). We need to condense our bookshelves (baby on the way, need room) so I was going to read and review them and only hold on to the ones that I loved.

Will those count towards my count?

Yes!!! They will definitely count, Victoria. And congrats on the reason you need to condense your shelves. :)

I do hope she loves JA as much as I do, and I do have a a couple of P&P board books already. My favourite being the cozy classic version!

Quick question!

Has anyone posted to Darcy's Library Level since Jan. 17th? Lenora has and her post didn't show up. I want to see if it happened to others. In the meantime, I'm going to do a test post to see if its showing up.

Okay, my post showed up, but can someone else do it so I can see if a non-moderator post will show up on the Mr. Darcy level?

EDIT:
Abigail's post showed up so its working now. But, I'd still like to know if we lost any posts so could others check in if they posted after the 17th? Thanks a bunch!

J. W. Garrett (jeannewallacegarrett) | 1376 comments I have a question for the group.

Has anyone had problems posting reviews to Amazon? I posted a review days ago and it has yet to show up in the reviews. I attempted to post again [I've had that happen before and it was there waiting for me for some reason]. However, that was not the case this time. When I clicked like I was going to post again... the book doesn't even show up in my list of books to be reviewed. So... it is out there... in the cosmos somewhere and I can't find it.

It was a book from the author... I thought perhaps they were only showing reviews of verified purchases. That is not the case because several of the reviews on file reflected that they were ARCs and books from the author. Not sure what to do now. Any clues????

message 18: by Abigail (new)

Abigail Bok (regency_reader) I don’t have much to contribute except that the last review I wrote for Amazon took two days to post instead of the usual fifteen minutes or so. It was of a book I have owned for years and did not buy from Amazon. Maybe they’re having technical difficulties.

It might just be a delayed posting for some reason. I've had some take a few days. It wouldn't show back on your 'to be rated/reviewed' list if you already submitted it. If Amazon doesn't accept a review, they send an email, so since you didn't hear from them, its probably just delayed.

Debbie (dmbrown) | 1246 comments I just got a notice from Amazon a couple of hours ago that a book I reviewed there last SATURDAY (it's now Wednesday morning here) is finally posted. I also sent them reviews for two books this morning. One of the two was an ARC directly from the author. Got an acknowledgement from Amazon almost immediately.

Yep, something's been weird at Amazon. Maybe it's fixed?

message 21: by Marlene (new)

Marlene | 307 comments I have had problems and continue to have problems. Random books -though mostly older ones, it seems - don't post AND I don't get the "we're reviewing your review..." message. I never get anything at all. I've tried posting some books for times to no avail. Someone says I'm doing something to break their rules. That could be it, but I have actually received a couple of emails in the past explicitly starting that my review was rejected. I then went back to find the offence - generally a link - repost and then have success. But for the books In having trouble with... I have NEVER Gotten a single email about it. I eventually contacted customer support. Gave them the info they asked for. And never heard anything again.

Marlene | 307 comments Marlene wrote: " I eventually contacted customer support. Gave them the info they asked for. And never heard anything again..."

I'm glad it worked itself out, J.W. Your message prompted me to send them a follow-up message since I hadn't gotten one. A different person asked me to send the same information the previous person did, to which request I forwarded the last e-mail I sent with information about which item it was, what my OS is, etc. Sigh.

On the upside, a review that I have posted since then was posted. ?????? Oh, well. I've decided to try to keep posting on both sites, because my Amazon account is my back-up in case GR ever eats one of my reviews. I've never had that happen, thankfully.

Hey, all!

About the Amazon review posting slowdown. I just discovered that they were doing a major overhaul that might have played a role in snafus all around for the last week or so. They just tweaked how you can sort your wishlist shelves (brought back the ability to sort by sale books) and a few other features plus they just put a ton of ebooks on sale to thank customers for dealing with the 'in flux' situation of the last few weeks. This type of thing would most certainly have the ability to affect review posting.
And hey, go check out what made it in for sales. :)

Not a soul, but I wish I did. Haha! I'm part of a blogger group and some of them know some people. I saw the announcement on our forum. The announcement was about the book sales, but the explanation made me realize that all the modifications in features was probably the reason for the review loading slow down.

Does that seem workable?

Yes, I thought that might be the case. It is a bummer. You'd think they'd at least set it up for withing UK Amazon users or other Amazons to share in their own groups.

Ceri | 29 comments I wish we could gift from Amazon UK too, Anji. I could do more giveaways then. But if people outside US can no longer accept kindle gifts then it'd probably only be for UK readers and I'd be no better off.

Marlene | 307 comments In an article/blog/whatever I read online about Persuasion, the following was stated:

"Sir Walter also discovers that his cousin, Viscountess Dalrymple, has arrived in Bath. Because of a past misunderstanding – he had ignored the news of her husband’s death – he lost contact with her."

Is this accurate? The statement doesn't make any sense to me. When I read Persuasion recently, it was by audio book, and this is the sorry of detail that night pass me by. Can anyone clarify? It's not important - I'm just curious.

Yes, they did lose contact when he neglected to send a note on the death of her husband and she, then, sent no note on the death of Lady Elliot. I'm not sure, but I think Austen was illustrating the personalities of these two people with such a disclosure.

I can't remember if it ever says. I want to say Sir Walter was somewhat vague on what had him preoccupied and didn't send the note. There wasn't really a misunderstanding as such, to my knowledge.

J. W. Garrett (jeannewallacegarrett) | 1376 comments In the movie [80] I think he mentioned that he had been ill when the Viscount died and no condolences were sent... a grievous oversight. So then when Lady Elliot died... no condolences were received from the Viscountess... thus ending discourse between the families. Even the appearance of a snub had weighty consequences.

message 46: by Ceri (new)

Ceri | 29 comments From Chapter 16:

"Sir Walter had once been in company with the late viscount, but had never seen any of the rest of the family; and the difficulties of the case arose from there having been a suspension of all intercourse by letters of ceremony, ever since the death of that said late viscount, when, in consequence of a dangerous illness of Sir Walter's at the same time, there had been an unlucky omission at Kellynch. No letter of condolence had been sent to Ireland. The neglect had been visited on the head of the sinner; for when poor Lady Elliot died herself, no letter of condolence was received at Kellynch, and, consequently, there was but too much reason to apprehend that the Dalrymples considered the relationship as closed."

Marlene | 307 comments Hello again!

By the way, I didn't see a film adaptation topic. Am I missing it, or is there not one?

My husband and watched Love and Friendship last night, and I was delighted! I thought the introduction of the characters was hilarious. I had to pay VERY CLOSE ATTENTION to understand the plot. It's been so long since I've read Lady Susan that I only remembered my impression that she's a nasty piece of work!

LOVED Kate Beckinsale in the role!

Austen is so clever. I've got to read it again some time.

So.... Here's a question. What's up with the ladies wearing their hair partway down? Was this in a different period?

OK. So I answered my own question, but I'm going to post this anyway.

Jane Austen's World shows similar hairstyles for 1780/90. Wikipedia indicates that the setting for the movie Love and Friendship is 1790. Tada, for anyone who wanted to know. ;-)
