I started being careful about online "friends" with Facebook. It surprises me how many people I don't know who are friends of my actual friends want to "friend" me. I'm not interested in their posts or their families, and I don't care for them to see mine, either, so I always decline. It's exactly as you said-- some people just want to collect friends. I don't get it and I won't be part of it.

I just checked my setting to make sure my email address isn't being shared with the "friend collectors" I had accepted before now.

I don't really get the appeal of collecting online friends just to have them either.
I once accepted a person like that and when I saw that they still were not reading, writing reviews, and interacting in the comments or group discussions... I knew there was a problem. I became suspicious when he began adding friends... all young and beautiful women. Nope-Nada-No-Way. I went to my settings and friends list and hit X. I dropped him like a hot potato. Life is too short for my news feed to blow up with his activity.
Got a reply from Goodreads. Here's what they said:"Hi Anji,
Thank you for your email! We've done some research and determined that these disappearing friend requests are due to spam content on the site. Since we don't tolerate spam on Goodreads we have removed these users and their associated content from the site. If you or your group members come across spam in the future, you can also flag it to our attention for removal. You'll need to visit the desktop site, as we don't currently have flagging options on our apps or mobile site. To flag a comment, click the small, gray "flag" link on the bottom right-hand side of the comment text. To flag a group, navigate to the group's homepage and click the gray "flag this group" link beneath the group's description. To flag a profile, click on the profile picture. Under the photo (next to the "Uploaded at" date), click the small, gray "flag" link. To flag a message, click on "flag" beneath the list of "message actions" on the right side of the page. To flag a friend request, click the small, gray "flag" link on the bottom right-hand side of the request.
Alternatively, feel free to email us with a link to the post and we'll take care of it. If you have any additional questions or concerns, please let us know!
Best,
Devonne"
I agree. I don’t add people just to have friends. I always check their status and see if we belong to the same reading group on GR. It is interesting to see where they are from especially on FB.
This is totally off that topic but I’m not sure if GR has a glitch because it is saying I’ve read 0% of my reading goal challenge and I’ve read over 100 books 📚 so far!!! I also checked my read list but the books are not in the order of read... the count on “read” is correct though. Anyone else have that issue? I am using the mobile version and even restarted the app & phone to no avail. 🤦🏻♂️😳😰

A while back I was getting the zero read message. It went back to my normal count the next day. I didn't report it.
Last year I had a Russian and a Ukrainian “friend” request, similarly with no photo and little to no content. I just ignored them. It’s always good to check out the person first!
I am getting a lot of those friend requests as well. Several each day it seems. The first I got, I checked out and in order to get the free book you had to add your creditcard... I just delete them.

Another possibility is that you are marking your books as read, but do not have the read dates on your page for the books.
Apparently, GR is working on something and the read dates will be back soon! There was a brown box with an alert saying as much at the top of my initial GR page. I presume that's the case for everyone, but just in case anyone overlooked the message.

They’ve come from people who look like they’ve been GR members for several years, but they have no history. Their friends all appear to be young, attractive women. No men. No one over thirty. They’ve reviewed no books, are members of no groups, have posted nothing. When given the opportunity to accept their friend request or ignore them, I clicked on ignore. Also, in the case of these few recent requests, their profiles were written in a Cyrillic language, I didn’t bother to attempt to translate it. Be wary of these requests. I can’t imagine these people are well intentioned.
Is there anyone from New York in this group that uses Overdrive or Libby to borrow ebooks or audiobooks? Someone told me that all residents of New York can add the NYC library their Overdrive account. I'm wondering if this is true, and if so, how to go about doing that.

I go to edit since I only read once and it was up to 5 I delete 4 go back it says 2 xs I edited it again and now I am back to 1 .. and my home page is up to 191 ... grrrrrrr

yeah, I have two pending "friend" requests that I'm ignoring ebcause I don't know them and it doesn't look like we read the same books. I fear GR is now like FB with trolls for adds and who knows what other information. GRR!!!

It can be very lucrative for them if they can get your credit card information. They can put all sorts of charges on it, leaving you to deal with the aftermath. I’m not sure, but through your credit card, they might also be able to glean all sorts of personal information about you. With that info, they can steal your identity and leave you with a giant headache.
I meant the spamming friends request on Goodreads it isn't an ecommerce site. You can just click ignore

To use Overdrive or the Libby app to check out books from the NYC library, you will need to get a card from the NYC library.
From the NYC library website, it looks like all New York State residents can join the NYC library. It looks like you can apply online, then email or fax a copy of your valid ID.
https://www.nypl.org/library-card
I have a remote library membership with the city of Los Angeles Public Library. (LA library is open to all residents of California, but I did have to apply in person at an LA Public Library branch.) I check out Overdrive items online via my computer or the app on my phone. I love it! It now have access to a much larger selection of electronic resources than I did from just my local library.
Are you familiar with using Overdrive? If you have more detailed questions about Overdrive, I will try to help.

Thank you very much! :-D
I am familiar with Overdrive, so that part is all good. :-)
This isn't a question, it's just an FYI in case this headline affects anyone:1st edition NOOK eReaders to stop working in a month
Yipes!!!
Hi Patricia,Overdrive is a service that libraries use for managing ebooks, audiobooks, and online videos. Overdrive maintains a catalog, and local libraries purchase the rights to specific books.
To use Overdrive you need a library card at a library that uses the Overdrive service. Not all libraries use Overdrive. Here is a link to find libraries do:
https://www.overdrive.com/account/sel...
To check out a book, you sign in to the Overdrive site via your local library, using your library card number to login. You can access the site via your PC or via the Overdrive or Libby app. You can browse available books by category or search for a specific author or title.
The customers check out the books for free. The libraries pay for each copy of an ebook or audiobook, just like they would a physical book. If a library has only one Overdrive copy of a book, and 5 people want to read it, one person checks the book out at a time, the other people wait in a Hold queue for the book.
If a book you desire is available, you can immediately check it out online, and download it to your phone or tablet through the app or to your PC. You can choose the format for book to be downloaded, either epub or Kindle (routed through your Amazon account), or you can read online through your browser.
Audiobooks are downloaded as MP3 files and you can listen to them through the app, or through itunes, or through your PC.
The checkout period is either 14 or 21 days. When the checkout period is over, the book is automatically removed from your account and device. No overdue fees!
Also, all libraries do not have the same Overdrive collection. Different libraries make different purchasing decisions a due to different budgets, different reader preferences, etc.
Your library may possibly use Hoopla, cloudLibrary, or RBdigital, which are competing ebook systems to Overdrive. I haven't used those systems, and can't comment on those.
I'm trying to find Austen books that have characters from her stories interact with each other. I recall there was a few but can't remember titles of them

Do you mean books that have Austen characters from separate novels brought together?
If so, I just read one. Miss Darcy's Beaux by Eliza Shearer. Joana Starnes does a couple that mash up Austen's novels, too. Maria Grace's winter-themed novella has a mash-up of characters. And, of course Carrie Bebris' Mr and Mrs. Darcy mysteries have the Darcy's encountering all the other novels' characters.

I love mashups!Joana Starnes' couple are: The Subsequent Proposal (P&P and Persuasion) and The Second Chance (P&P and S&S). Both are excellent books.
Maria Grace's is Snowbound at Hartfield: A Sweet Tea Novella; Pride and Prejudice sequel - Emma, Persuasion and P&P. Another excellent read, with Elizabeth Elliot as the unlikely heroine.
There’s a really old one—maybe even one written by a member of her family?—that uses characters from all the novels. It’s set in Highbury and centered on Mrs Goddard. It may be Old Friends and New Fancies. Do any of the resident experts recall? I don’t have access to my library right now.

Abigail wrote: "There’s a really old one—maybe even one written by a member of her family?—that uses characters from all the novels. It’s set in Highbury and centered on Mrs Goddard. It may be Old Friends and New ..."I read it 3 plus yrs ago. It was ok.
My phone forced me to get a new version of the GR app. I am extremely unhappy. It is now showing me every little thing that people are doing rather than my Taylor made list even though my web browser is still doing it correctly. Any help? If I can't fix this issue, I'm kicking GR off my phone!
Your update probably changed your settings... or didn't carry forward your former settings. This may or may not help but... here is one suggestion. I don't know if you can do it from your phone or will have to go to your computer but here are a couple of suggestions:
Click on your profile icon... at the bottom of the list is 'account settings.' Click on that and you now have several option tabs. You can look under your 'feeds' icon and make sure everything is as you want it. You can look under the 'email' icon and verify all is as you wish.
Next you can leave 'profile' and check out your 'friends' icon. Click on that... just above the pictures of your friends and just to the right is the 'edit' icon. Click on that and each friend will have an option for 'top friends.' Every friend with a check mark means you will get a news feed from whatever they are doing. You can uncheck and limit news feeds activity from them.
I think that might help with the blowing up of your phone and overcrowding your newsfeeds. If not... someone else may have a better or easier plan.
Hmm. I can do that on my laptop, but not on my phone. :-( The phone app only has VERY basic settings, and I looked all over the settings. Nothing as sophisticated as what you're detailing.
I'm not using a browser, but the GR app. I don't like using the browser on my phone because I have enlarge things to read it. Ick.
Right. But on my computer, my GR feed is not messed up. Only on my app. I think the app is forcing me to see everything. :-(
Yes, but it seems to be an abbreviated version of the list of settings. Which I know makes sense to a certain extent, but it's extremely irritating that the settings do not at all include information about what I want in my news feed. :-(
Well, I've removed the app and am using the browser. For whatever reason, it looks much better than it had previously. 🙄. Thanks for the help!
No problem, J.W. I really appreciate your effort to help. It SEEMS like it should be possible to make it work the way I want to, which is why I asked. So after trying three times to use the browser on my phone - which looks really good - until I try to view the alerts. When I try to view my alerts, it brings up a screen to reinstall the app. In other words - I can do most thing son the browser, but not view alerts. Argh! I give up. On my laptop only from now on!!!!
For a last resort, I think I'll go over to my one other group to ask them if anyone has had a similar experience and whether they've found a workaround. But I think this is it. Ugh.
Hey -- I posted in another group, and one person in that group is a member of a group that discusses GR issues, and here is her response:"I checked and appearantly they are aware of the newsfeed problem and will be working on it. (Another matter entirely is When it will be fixed."
So I am not crazy!!! :-)
