Sci-fi/Fantasy. Lower-class boy gets picked as a Wizard's apprentice in a ceremony. While training, he falls in love with the princess. Involves an alien planet. Spoiler ahead.

It takes place in this world where wizards are a big deal and this lower class boy gets picked as an apprentice in this ceremony and while he's training he falls in love with the princess. And then I don't remember much of the middle bit but he somehow ends up as a slave or something on an alien planet and there he finds a wife and I think he has a kid. And then something happens and he has to go back to his original planet to save the princess and his people and he brings his wife with him, but the princess is still into him or something. Please help me figure out what this book is its been driving me crazy!
