Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12594 comments Evening, mixed day at work, was terribly distracted while in the office, then IT asked to dial into my computer to fix something I reported, they gave up after an hour and said they'll need me to take it in, so that's an hour down, and then I got invited to a meeting, I normally just book these, it was quite nice to not only be invited, but have people ask me things, so I wasn't just sat there bored, I had a purpose. The meeting I should have had today is rearranged for Wed. Does feel like I didn't do much of my actual job though. Apparently I got 37% deep sleep again, but I woke up about 4ish feeling very tired and Lucy joined me, but laid against me oddly, so I couldn't move. Work are advising covid tests now, I did my first one last night and was nearly sick, so not looking forward to that, although you have to put on the signing in sheet if you have done one in the last 5 days, and a lot of people had said no, so might not be an issue if I don't. I had visions of it not working and ringing my boss saying I couldn't do them right and could I still go in the office! We ended up getting some sun yesterday so I alternated housework with sitting outside, came in every time it went cloudy, so housework done and a full book read (only 186 page childrens books), plus face and foot mask - I do really enjoy lying on the bed with a foot and face mask on while reading, will do that till it is cold enough to have a bath again.

It's good to be listened to - especially when you put in a lot of work.

It's our real teacher, reading the good stuff. Standards are set early and high.

Indeed. Although I am firmly of the opinion that there is something to be learned from reading anything, however outwardly 'trashy' it may appear.

I was nearly into a wee greasy spot with the heat today. Could hear thunder rumbling away in the distance, but no break here yet. There have been some cracking sunsets though (even if I've had to share my favourite quiet beach with a lot of randoms whilst out for my evening constitutional!)

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12594 comments I agree R - neighbour says she only likes reading things she can learn from, and I point out that you learn from everything you read (she doesn't appreciate that!)

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12594 comments Afternoon, had a nice catch up morning after yesterday. Sleep app said I only got 25% deep sleep, but I woke up at 6 feeling refreshed, it's a very unusual concept. Supposed to have hail and thunder this pm, but currently sunny. Spoke to podiatry, she was very apologetic saying they had a long waiting list, and then gave me an app on 31st August, which I thought was fairly quick actually.

There is a lot of good stuff out there that has almost been forgotten.
I discovered Saki (after knowing about him for decades I finally read some of his work) and he has a lovely turn of phrase and writes well

Here's The Unrest Cure, which is a short story of just over 2000 words

Yes, at the very least you can experience the sense of liberation that comes from abandoning a book :-) As Dorothy Parker, among others, said, "“This is not a novel to be tossed aside lightly. It should be thrown with great force.”"

Thanks for that Jim. Have never got round to reading Saki before - interesting!

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12594 comments Evening, was supposed to have a webinar this morning, but couldn't access the link, gave up after 15 mins, 5 mins later the client e-mailed to say that they had technical issues, so they are doing them tomorrow and Fri. I was supposed to be off tomorrow so thought I was going to have to do 3 meetings on Fri, but the neighbours we were taking out went to see their family in Liverpool and the husband overdid it, so isn't up to going out tomorrow - as the weather is rubbish, I've cancelled my holiday, so can do a meeting tomorrow instead. We've had quite a bit of thunder today. Got hold of the hairdresser today, they have got me in on 12th August, I really wanted it before my bro came on 7th, but didn't want to put them out, it's my fault for not booking it earlier.

Very interesting when you think that it's written in 1912. He sadly died in 1916

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12594 comments Evening, was glad I went to work today actually, the webinar this morning went over, so would have struggled if that had been tomorrow! I sent an article to a couple of people this pm including a director, who replied with 'well done' - was quite pleased to get such a good response to just sending an article out. Also managed to do more prep for one of tomorrow's meeting than expected, so feel quite happy.

A lot of men did. My own Grandfather volunteered in 1914 even though he was married with two daughters. Being a miner as well, he'd never have been conscripted but he went before they even invited him.
He arrived home in 1920 having served an extra year in Afghanistan as well!

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12594 comments Evening, felt chilly last night so went to bed with socks, weighted blanket and fluffy blanket (and quilt!) - woke up to find one sock on the bed and one on the floor, so must have been warm during the night! Enjoyed both meetings, colleagues had a reminisce in the afternoon one. Then had to do food shopping after work, but so many empty shelves, I wasn't too bad, but couldn't get most of what neighbour wanted. Cleaner is still too poorly to work, she did offer to fit me in before the end of next month, but I said I'd be fine, didn't want to put too much on her. Doubt I'll do it in the two hours she does though!

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12594 comments Evening, didn't get for a walk today as walking friend didn't get up till 2pm! Not a bad thing though as my foot wasn't good today, and I had housework to do (did save two rooms for tomorrow, in case she messaged for a walk). Had to go to chemist this morning, had a random red vein in my bad eye this week, but the test the eye doctor gave me wasn't indicating iritis, but it has been really itchy, last night it was red (although I was shattered after the shopping yesterday), and still red this morning, so as it was red and itchy, thought I'd see if they could give me some conjunctivitis treatment in case it is that, and within half an hour of the first dose, it wasn't itchy, so fingers crossed. Then ended up going to Morrisons with neighbour and managed to get some of the things I couldn't get yesterday, and also came home with a cardigan that was reduced to £8, I've been looking for a new one for work for a while, so happy about that.

Jim | 21809 comments It does sound as if you're going through the wars a bit :-(

Do you get a lot of conjunctivitis?

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12594 comments Thanks Jim - never had much conjunctivitis, but often get itchy eyes (apparently you can get allergy conjunctivitis, which doesn't have a discharge), it is less red today, but still swollen (which isn't a sign of iritis) and things do seem a bit paler if I close my good eye, so not sure whether I need to get it looked at. On the upside, no rain forecast today and foot is much better.

Anna Faversham (annafaversham) | 1752 comments Once again, I echo Jim, Desley.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12594 comments Yeah, just hope I don't get the awkward ward sister again, who dismisses me as they aren't the typical iritis symptoms, I did contemplate ringing Specsavers instead. It has much improved today, as the redness has been going down, which is positive.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12594 comments Evening, made an app with Specsavers (they do a Minor Eye Service for the NHS, it's more limited than pre covid, but they can check for certain conditions and then refer if necessary), as I told the woman, if it isn't iritis, they can find out what it is, the hospital will just say it isn't and dismiss me, as the section I go to only have the machine for iritis, can't get in till Wed, but as it feels perfectly fine (and more comfortable now the conjunctivitis drops have stopped the itching, which the allergy drops didn't), I've said I'll wait, but if it starts getting painful, or any other symptoms, I'll ring the hospital and get seen. The cloudy vision is weird, I only notice it when I close my other eye and things are a bit paler. Nice day today, so chilled on the bed reading after work, am racing through books, which is a good thing with how many I own, and that I can't stop buying!

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4836 comments Why is the medical world so incapable of fixing things? It gets to me sometimes, and not just about the ME/CFS.

You are being very patient, Desley.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12594 comments Urgh so I woke up and my eye was painful to touch (although not iritis pain), and watering, so I rang the hospital when they opened at 8, even though it had stopped watering by that point. Luckily got a nice nurse, who got me an app this pm, she did admit that I was right to try conjunctivitis drops first as red and itchy might not have been taken as seriously. Got there and thought great, only one person in the waiting room, however it turned out it was her baby that was the patient, and she wasn't obliging, so I got seen nearly an hour after my app time. It is indeed iritis, so had to go to the hospital pharmacy for prescription, who took nearly half an hour to dispense, so I wasn't back in time for work. So on drops for nearly 7 weeks, she has told me to stop the conjunctivitis drops, which is a pain as now I have itchy eyes again. Bizarrely, despite her saying it was moderate iritis, the slit lamp didn't make me flinch, and I have no light sensitivity, pain, just red and cloudy vision - but I can only tell that when I shut my good eye, I can see perfectly well.

L.A. Kent | 3925 comments Tricky things eyes. Better safe than sorry though I think, but its a pain when you've got to wait for ages for appointments. Always have this problem myself. Hope the poorly one recovers soon. Mine react badly to drops (and dilation drops when being examined) with preservatives, but as you'd stopped the drops that wasn't the problem obviously. Hope you get to the bottom of it soon.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12594 comments Evening, eye is much less red today, even though hourly drops are a nuisance. Was supposed to rain today, but has been dry all day, which is good.

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4836 comments Anyone else been getting GR Friend requests or Follows from bitcoin traders with ridiculous profiles?

I've blocked two this week.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12594 comments Evening, got some quite heavy rain last night.

It is linked to my arthritis Jim, it happens when my immune system decides to attack itself, so there are no triggers. Ironically though I increased my medication after I injured my foot, so it should be well controlled. No Alicia, but I've gone from not getting GR notifications to getting blank ones!

I get a lot of friend requests and messages from ex-US military gentlemen, on both FB and instagram. They never mention their Bitcoin interests, though.

Our Fringe by the Sea festival starts tomorrow and we currently have all sorts of weather warnings pinging. Although everything is "under cover" it's all pretty much just canvas roofs so it will will be well ventilated! But the whole town is buzzing and no doubt we'll all be able to hear Basement Jaxx and Lulu doing their stuff.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12594 comments Morning, my brother landed last night, we are having a family meal at lunch, then he is coming here to watch a film this evening, before he flies back tomorrow morning. As he's the first person to properly be in the house for 18 months, will have to do some different type of tidying! At least my drops are only every 2 hours today, cloudy vision is practically gone, just got loads of floaters, but I had this last year and it cleared up, so not overly concerned. Unfortunately it's supposed to rain, which is a shame as we are eating at a pub across from a park, would have been nice for my nephew to have a play on it.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12594 comments Morning, had a nice day yesterday despite the weather, food was good even though my portion was so large I couldn't finish it. Suggested taking them to the candle shop for dessert, which went down well. It was very strange walking into the pub we were eating in to be the only one wearing a mask! Bro came round for a few hours in the evening, we were going to watch a film, but just ended up chatting instead, was good to have a catch up, and Lucy was nice to him. My sister gave us some of our school reports, she'd found, one from just before my 7th birthday said 'She's a quiet, well behaved child whose main interest is reading rather than playing with others' - not much change then!! As I did so much housework yesterday, I haven't got much left to do, but rain forecast all day, so might just have to watch TV for a bit, then have my usual pamper session in the afternoon.

Stuart Ayris (stuayris) | 2614 comments Hi! Just returned from mind blowing two weeks of wild camping in Scotland. What an astonishing place! Still trying to get my fool head around just how stunning is that scenery and how gorgeous are the folk up there. Finding out a couple of weeks before we arrived that Ayris actually means "son of Ayr" and that our DNA is 48% Scottish made it all even more thrilling. Certainly goes some way to making sense of my innate life long loathing of injustice and authority! ;-)

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12594 comments Evening, bit of a frustrating day, IT were trying to fix a problem on my computer that they had been unable to remotely, thought it would take an hour - 3 hours later, they had to say 'when are you next in?, so I asked when they would like me back in, and they asked me to come in again in the morning, warned me this time it might take until 12! Candle shop are 7 today, so were doing a bit of a celebration, with free ice cream, so I popped round (ironically I went to get eggs for me and ice pops for neighbour!) and did get persuaded to try birthday cake ice cream, it was really good. Was talking to a random person as we were both sheltering, she's an animal lover too, so a nice conversation

Glad you had a good time camping Stuart

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12594 comments Evening, bit of a mixed day, there were loads of people in today, some I haven't seen for a while, and one who I see most weeks, but he was really chatty today, so I had a nice socialisation morning, but didn't get as much done as I'd like. IT decided the way to fix my computer was to give me a new one, but they didn't tell me till I went down at 12.30, so I hadn't managed to warn them of some of the things I needed transferring! So have spent part of the afternoon trying to set up all my links, as about 95% of my work is done through links, so I'm not forever searching for docs, and I keep e-mails open till I know they are dealt with, lost those, so I actually felt very lost, and am sure something will have been forgotten till I get shouted at for not doing it! Am hoping tomorrow I can just crack on with things with no interruptions, as I have lost a bit of time this week, and I have meetings Thu and Fri. Was raining when I left, but got nice and warm, so have managed to get the washing done

My wife inherited a system where everything automatically went onto the cloud and she automatically saves stuff on her machine now :-)

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12594 comments Well, IT bloke came up with a solution this morning, it is my Wed pm task, unfortunately the back up he'd found gave me stuff dating back to 2008, so what is normally a half hour to an hour job I gave up on after 2 hours, will have to have another look at that tomorrow, so haven't actually done one of the jobs I really wanted to get finished this week, and I have meetings tomorrow and Fri! Oh well, at least the coffee shop have made bakewell blondies and putting one to one side for me to pick up at lunch tomorrow, so that will help make up for the rubbish week!

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12594 comments Evening, I've had a surreal hairdresser app that made me realise what a small village I live in! The owner's daughter puts my colour on, she was asking about work, and it turns out her other half is bricklayer on one of our sites, fortunately he is happy there! Then when I was having my hair washed, a customer came in and I thought the voice sounded familiar - turned out it is my next door neighbour! When I commented that I thought he did his hair himself, the hairdresser replied with 'he does sometimes'!! Then the owners 14 year old granddaughter came over, which made me realise I've been going there more than that, as I remember her going on maternity leave with her!! Another frustrating day at work, started the day with a 1.5 hour meeting (but at least I got to sit with the girls, so don't have to worry they haven't had enough time with me being home late), new laptop likes to open things randomly, minimize teams calls when it feels like, so hopefully we won't have any technical issues for tomorrow's meeting as I do all the document sharing, so that could be fun! Oh, and I'd gone to the coffee shop for some lunch (and cake), the card machine wasn't working, so went to a cashpoint and bumped into my colleague!
