Finally made it over to fill my new prescription for glasses - I got it two months ago, and haven't had the energy to go back! One more off the to do list.

Next one: acquiring a California Driver's license - a bit of a problem because I have no car to drive to the DMV, Ubers and Lyfts are not available/not reliable yet, and everything is more complicated when you're disabled. I had the (to me) brilliant idea of letting a local driving school give me a short refresher course, take me to the test and bring me back - I have a message out to them. They usually do teenagers getting their first license, so I should be easy.

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4836 comments I'd absolutely love to be able to go on one of those real walks. The last time I made the major effort, with walking sticks and a backpack with a tiny camp stool, was in December of 2014, among the giant redwoods at Muir Woods just north of San Francisco across the Golden Gate Bridge. There is a one mile asphalt paved loop, flat, for wheelchairs and small children, and I did it by walking short distances and then sitting. I have to figure out a way to do that again. They're absolutely gorgeous, unimaginably huge.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12594 comments Morning, baby shower went better than expected, although we had to leave before the end as neighbours back was too bad - although we did miss the game we were dreading - charades, but like pretending to give birth and breastfeeding. As we got there early, I got half an hour with ex colleague, that was really nice. Afternoon tea wasn't great, some of the vegi sandwiches were salad sandwiches, had to eat lots of cake to feel full. Hopefully going for a walk today, sun is currently shining, but grey clouds.

Stuart Ayris (stuayris) | 2614 comments Back from lovely camping trip to the Scilly Isles. What an amazing place! So amazing in fact that it more than made up for the return journey that saw us take 6 hours to drive from Penzance to Bath, necessitating an overnight stop at a mate's house and a mad three hour drive back to Essex for cricket!

Hope everyone's ok and still being wonderful!

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12594 comments Evening, what a day! I did hit my end of June deadline, although it did mean working an extra hour (and we don't get paid overtime or time in lieu), but had to as one of the other directors gave me 3 tasks yesterday and he needs them before his meeting next Mon! Plus IT have made some of the changes from the meeting we had at the beginning of the month, so need to start those as well. Better than being bored! Nipped to the candle shop at lunch, and had to drop some stuff off at a friends after work, then the Ocado order arrived early, so had to take neighbours stuff over. Think turning down Chinese was probably a bad idea, as I need to cook yet.

M.T. McGuire (mtmcguire) | 8049 comments Bleargh. Knackered this morning. Went to Mum's. Had to go the long way. 80 miles longer because the M11 was borked. Coming back I had to take a detour because the M25 was borked. Somewhere round Chipping Ongar in the middle of said detour my gearstick fell off just as I was changing gear. I was going about 20 up a hill so didn't really manage to get to the side. I made my own two mile tail back; a big red line on Google maps. Got home eventually with the aid of a kind man in a tow truck but ... let's just say it was an interesting day.

Could only happen to you MT!!

message 15660: by Kelly (new)

Kelly Clayton | 1040 comments MT, wow - that certainly was an interesting day. Glad you got home okay. Had the day off work, and we went out for lunch to celebrate the in-laws 60th wedding anniversary. Spent the morning rushing around and then delivering the cake and balloons to the restaurant, before dashing home, slinging on a dress and a slap of makeup and heading back to the restaurant. We had a lovely day.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12594 comments Morning, rubbish night sleep. Hoping to go for a walk, and then there is a food and artisan fayre again, so will pop to that, and take some books to the charity shop that give them away, while I normally favour animal charities, I like the idea of helping people read even if they are struggling financially. Hopefully won't come home with any myself! Raining and thunderstorms forecast this morning, as much as I love a good thunderstorm, I don't like driving in them, so hoping to get everything done and home before it starts.

Glad you got to properly celebrate the in-laws wedding anniversary Kelly, wasn't there a drama around last years?

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12594 comments Morning, we went for a walk despite the rain, I tried a lightweight waterproof jacket I forgot I owned, it isn't very waterproof, I was wet to my skin! Still went to the food fayre, although it wasn't much more interesting than last month. The charity shop not only took my books, but they were being put on the shelves before I left!! I did come back with books, one I was going to pay 99p for the kindle version, so that was a bonus. After tea we went to the candle shop for ice cream, tried rhubarb and custard, was lovely. Bad night sleep again though. Luckily not much on today

You have all my sympathy Desley, the 'lightweight' ones are always like that aren't they? I bought one to got metal detecting. First time I wore it I got soaked through. It cost the same price as the Bergaus ones I usually buy that work really well. I just wanted something I could wear on warmer summer days.

The problem is, as Aunty Wainwright used to say on Last of the Summer Wine, "Lightweight? Oh you mean shoddy" :-)

message 15666: by Alicia (new)

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4836 comments That's funny, Jim.

My backpacking kids are good at finding lightweight and good, but it's always more expensive. Worth it, if it keeps you from hypothermia in the back country.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12594 comments Evening, had good news today, we did a raffle for the walking competition at work, and I won one of the prizes - I never win anything!! £50 voucher, from any of the retailers on our discount platform. Was hoping to get some walking sandals, but not sure any of the retailers on there sell them. Didn't really want to do a supermarket, as we have just done a big Ocado order, so got some 'treat' things from there. Contemplating either Primark or a pub chain, as my bro is able to come over next month and I could treat us to lunch. Although my plan was to treat us to ice cream. Wet again today.

Well-remembered, Desley! It was my mother-in-law's 80th a couple of years ago and she fell down the stairs as she was about to leave the house on the way to her party.

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments Well we've had some rain!! But not as much as Edinburgh which temporarily gained a number of extra rivers. And various other water features.

We had a fantastic half term holiday with daughter, s-i-l and two teenaged grandchildren. We saw more of young grandson on Saturday than we did of the girls in a week! A phase, I hope, or they'll wear out their beds.

Stuart Ayris (stuayris) | 2614 comments Hi all!

My wife has finally coerced me into helping her with a travel blog that she intends to use to document our escapades over the next few years as we traipse around the universe. Will be launching some time this week I think. It's called On The Run For Fun! and starts with our recent trip to Knepp followed later by our sojourn in the Scilly Isles. Scotland will follow and then who knows where we'll be come September!

Anyway, hope all you lovely people are all good!

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12594 comments Evening, we had a brief interlude from the rain, luckily just as I was finishing work, so had a little walk round the park and some time lying on the bed reading in the sun.

Ah yes, I remember now Kelly. Don't ask what I had for my tea last night though!! Sounds like Edinburgh had a lot of rain R!! Glad you have had some nice family time Kath. Sounds interesting Stuart, you'll have to share a link

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Exactly, Rosemary.
Lovely day here - the first for quite a while. Hoping to get some of the flourishing weeds out of the veg patch later.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12594 comments Evening all, nice sunny day so have been taking advantage of the weather. Didn't enjoy tea much last night, not sure if they have new staff, or as they were short staffed, the decent chef was off, but it wasn't up to the normal standard.

As much as I'm not a big football fan, I was happy with the result and think one of the pundits was right when he said that we needed such positivity after the last 16 months (even though I do think we'll see a spike as it appears a lot of people through the rules out of the window, with hugging etc)

I've never had the Goodreads app but I'm sure I remember people saying it was rubbish. Perhaps you haven't used it for a reason :-)

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12594 comments Yes, you aren't missing much not using the Goodreads app Kelly, it is awful for the forum part of the site, the only thing I use it for is adding books, I did enjoy scanning barcodes last year but discovered some of my books are too old to have barcodes!!

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12594 comments Evening, nice day today, weather has stayed dry, if muggy and humid. Went to a farm stall and candle shop at lunch, I'd met the farm people at the food fayre last week and they said they were in our village every Fri, so I had a look, as they had limited stock last week due to other stockholders, they had some nice stuff. Then went to the retail park and Aldi after work.

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments One lovely day of sun yesterday and today the haar was back. Not good for the Scottish Open golf being held along the road - I doubt there was enough visibility for the spectators

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12594 comments Morning, had a rubbish night sleep. Not sure if we are walking today, got a very cryptic response when I asked last night, although as it is raining, I won't be bothered if she says no.

message 15688: by Kelly (new)

Kelly Clayton | 1040 comments Ahhh, thank you, Jim and Desley. I recall some talk about the app now. I tried to update what I'd finished reading in the Just Finished thread and couldn't tag the book or author details, so the app isn't much use to me!

Rainy day in Jersey. Am staying at home in front of the laptop. Have a great day, All, whatever you're up to.

My daughter has had to get used to that :-)
Mind you, being brought up on the side of Morecambe Bay she's used to the tide going out properly, not sort of fluctuating a bit :-)

Jim | 21809 comments Alicia wrote: "Ah! Learner a new word. Lovely. Much more exciting than the description 'fog.'

Nobody is quite sure, the origin I've seen is from Old Norse hárr ‘hoar, hoary’.

Well they were pirates at times :-)

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments And further down the coast it's called a sea fret, which possibly comes from German.
However you cry it, it lifted yesterday in the late morning and we ended up with a beautiful day. My extremities are now nut brown, whilst clothed parts are still that particular shade of white Scottish skin that has a tinge of blue through it :D

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12594 comments Morning, we did get to go for a walk yesterday, it was bouncing down on the drive to my friends, but fortunately it slowed down as I pulled up outside her house, and then stopped part way along the walk, was very humid though. Did treat myself to a blondie on the way home, was very enjoyable while finishing my book, as the sun did kind of come out in the afternoon. Had a rubbish night sleep again, was disturbed at 3, 5.30 and 7, did manage to get another couple of hours. Luckily not much housework today.

wow must have got warm R!

message 15694: by Stuart (new)

Stuart Ayris (stuayris) | 2614 comments Morning all! Sorry to hear about your poor sleep Desley. Hope it improves.

Aching this morning after another monumental cricket loss but did pick up three wickets and scored 14 runs - a real man of the match performance in our team!

Lots of writing planned for today and then the footie. 105 days without alcohol now and definitely broken the back of that old fiend I reckon!

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12594 comments Friend messaged and asked if I wanted to go for a walk to Costa and get some food, so I said yes, whoever said my neighbour might be jealous certainly has a point. Me and walking friend are going to a local market town and she is struggling for a Sat, so suggested a Fri, and it didn't go down well with neighbour, even though she was only telling me on Fri I need to start booking some days off, and the only day I've taken this hol year was to go to said market town with her, and some of last years hols were taking her to the hospital, as will some of this years (she doesn't need more surgery, but does need more injections), so she should think herself lucky I'm willing to use my holidays for her apps, not everyone would (or could)

Jim | 21809 comments your neighbour is starting to look needy and controlling!

message 15697: by M.T. (last edited Jul 12, 2021 03:21AM) (new)

M.T. McGuire (mtmcguire) | 8049 comments Desley, I agree with Jim about your neighbour, I did suggest she was jealous, but am sure there were others who did, too.
Ro, I can confirm it's called a sea fret along the South Coast.

I'm knackered I slept in this morning. Didn't wake up until nine o'clock. Off out to see my friends from the Gym in a while. It was an absolute pisser when that closed. Also off for a walk with a friend on Tuesday. Hmm ... it's a busy week all of us are going to Mum's on Wed as my Uncle and Aunt are going to be there, also have to go back down again on the Friday for the funeral of one of Mum's carers ... I think I'm going to get Thursday off!

Michael, I watched the footie last night, too. Bummer of a result but at the same time, it's not something I expected to see in my life time so it was still exciting and still a fine effort. Pickford did alright too, two saves each, so parity with the best goalie in the world at the moment who also appeared to be twice the height of anyone else on the pitch! Mwahahahaaaargh!

Cheers

MTM

Stuart Ayris (stuayris) | 2614 comments Beaten by the better side. I'm certainly more philosophical where football is concerned since I knocked the alcohol on the head!

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12594 comments Morning, think the weather is reflecting people's moods again today! Disappointed with the result, but we fought to the end, we didn't let them win easily. Shame people are ruining it with racism and vandalism though. I did enjoy putting a foot mask on and chilling with a book yesterday, might be my new Sunday thing when it is too warm to have a bath.

Walking friend's description while walking was that neighbour is getting bossy and trying to act like my mum! I think she is getting needy because her back is restricting her, so it's hard to just say FU, but it makes her hard to be round.

Yeh, I should have mentioned that! I think Italy were the better side and it was a decent game, lots of skill and I think our lads have plenty to be proud of. Shame about all the aftermath crap. Adds fuel to the utterly depressing 'English people are all racists' stuff all over the internet.

Walked a mile and a half to lunch and discovered that I'd got the wrong day. Doh!
