Lynne (Tigger's Mum) | 4643 comments Home safe and sound, there were so few cars on the motorway Sunday morning in France it was eerie. We stopped at a Tesco near Ashford and I stocked up. We are obeying the letter of the law and doing quarantine but I searched to see if stopping en route wasn’t allowed and it made no mention. It was difficult to find a space for the shopping - if he’d have had to brake hard I’d have been wearing eggs and salad. He does strap luggage to the seats as he’s safety conscious, I can’t put anything anywhere - it irritates him big time.
The weather was vile and worse in Wales. The 30mph speed limit on the M4 presumably because it was wet and windy blew his last fuse though.
It wasn’t even particularly wet or windy on that section.
There didn’t seem to be a lot difference in the volume of traffic here though. There were more cars last night on a foul night in Pembrokeshire than we saw all morning from Troyes to Calais and we have the idea that the French don’t obey the rules? 😁

M.T. McGuire (mtmcguire) | 8049 comments Hello everyone, sounds like things are eventful. Desley, hope the foot is less sore, Lynne glad you got home. Knee is done. It’s an improvement in some ways but the aftermath is grim. The leg is about four inches bigger round than it should be and is literally purple. It is unbelievably sore at the moment, I’m either doing too much physio or not enough but at least the first appointment is on Thursday. Also think it will be a lot more pleasant with the clamps out, they go on Friday. At the moment it’s too sore to be able to sleep more than about 20 minutes at a time which makes the nights a bit hellish but otherwise, it’s coming on, which is the important thing. It’s very stiff because of the bruising.

Anyway, morning all. :-)

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12595 comments So pleased to hear from you MT, hope it reduces enough for you to get some proper sleep

Surely they should be able to tell you whether you're doing too much or too little PT?

Still cheering - the operation part is over.

I think it's a fairly inexact science. While I was in there, I was progressing extremely quickly but well. They couldn't find an extra zimmer frame for me so I suggested I had a go at crutches and was fine. I've used crutches so much I'm fairly comfortable with them so it wasn't that difficult. Anyway, I've just gone on from there and assumed I'm doing more of the same. Working up to three lots of physio, four if I can, doing three short walks each day - but let them get bigger as we go.

I was offered physio yesterday but McOther's big work thing was on for then so I went for Thursday. Needless to say the buggers have hit a snag so the work thing isn't happening yet and I could have gone yesterday after all! Needless to say we don't know when the work thing will happen - so my money is on Thursday at 2.00 because that's when I am supposed to be at physiotherapy. Mwahahargh ... and I can walk to have the stitches out on Friday.

Cheers

MTM

Holy smokes yes! Me too. McOther has finally admitted that he'll have to sleep in the spare room. I've been offering to sleep there, myself since I got home. I woke him at 5.00 am this morning ... on the up side, I didn't wake him when I had to get up and move about at 12.00, 12.20, 1.15, 2.30, 3.00 or 4.00 so there's an upside to everything! Mwahahahrgh!

Cheers

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12595 comments Blimey, we very briefly got up to 10 degrees yesterday, by the time I got to work this morning, my car had the ice alert as it was down to 3! We got back 10 mins before the heavy wind and rain started yesterday, so that was handy. Did have some slight flooding on the drive to the vets though. Checked with the secretary, we are still working as usual despite lockdown, which means I need to come in once a week just to print off a document, so will just come in for half a day. It does make me despair and think that the lockdown will have to be extended as so many places are trying to get round it.

I'm impressed he's managed so long before caving in MT!

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12595 comments Finally got a date for the funeral, Wed 18th at 9am – downside is the funeral place use a crematorium that is 17.7 miles away. Don’t even know how lockdown affects funeral numbers. Started the day with a 1.5 hour insurance meeting, luckily it was over teams, so I could do some work in the boring bits! Had my eye check up today, one of the quickest ones, lovely doc today. Inflammation better than last time, and got to go back in 3 weeks. Docs have rang, my iron is a bit low so they have sent a prescription to the chemist. First time since being vegi that’s happened, even though I take supplements. Neighbour is a bit concerned in case it’s the new anti-inflams, I just think it’s my diet not being great during lockdown, I said last week I needed to do something after my birthday. Might explain my tiredness though.

Thanks MT, she seems back to normal now, and doing well on the new form of gabapentin, which was £12 for 2 months, compared to the liquid at £94 which was supposed to be used within 3 months (I ignored that and used it till it was empty, as I'd only used half!)

Lynne (Tigger's Mum) | 4643 comments It’s nice to be back even though it’s colder and wetter. Three days of quarantine done. It’s no problem at the moment as there’s plenty to do. Will you be OK for the funeral Desley.
How’s the knee Mary? Will it set your metal detector off when your out detecting?

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4836 comments Had our monthly lunch with the women here who are 75 and under - many new people have moved into our retirement community even with a pandemic on.

The patio was gorgeous, sunny, warm, protected - except for the construction team updating an apartment for a new resident using power tools.

I don't always go, but was happy to get out today (no sleep last night due to elections), and enjoy meeting the new women. I had just finished a scene and a chapter, and was feeling like celebrating a bit.

Got a chance to show Maggie off to the newbies. I'm such a ham!

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12595 comments Well, good job I am working from home today, we had a power cut in the office that has wiped out our server and internet, fortunately as I’m at home, I can do the internet part of my job, although I had some non internet stuff to do this morning. At least I can do something, I wouldn’t have been able to in the office. Forgot to say, I had to drop some shopping off for my sis on the way home from work on Tue, and a house round the corner had all the outside Christmas decs up, first one I’ve seen this year.

Glad you managed to have your monthly lunch Alicia.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Christmas decorations were all over the place when we went out last weekend.
I'm not complaining. I reckon we need all the cheer we can get these days.
Still no update on my paperwork. I went into school yesterday to arrange volunteering once a week. I'll go in Wednesdays to give extra language support to some of the KS2 kids.
I need to do something or my brain will completely turn to mush.

Lynne (Tigger's Mum) | 4643 comments I saw Christmas decorations on a house when we came home on Sunday night it made me laugh too.
The practicalities of ‘house arrest’ have just had a fight with new technology advances. We’ve got to send cheques by post - no they don’t want a direct payment into the bank so that’s ruled out.
We can print a stamp, and stick it on the envelope, no problem printing it but we haven’t any glue in the house and then we cant go to the postbox at the end of the road if we are being strictly legal.
Yes I might be able to borrow glue from my neighbours and get someone to post it but it’s bizarre to have technology solutions and be dependant on the banal trivia to support it in action

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12595 comments Urgh, woke up about 2.45 and didn’t really get back to sleep. Managed to splash my face with dirty water putting the food bin out last night, bad eye seems a bit more sore and red today, hope I haven’t aggravated anything. At least my meeting has been cancelled. Poor Lucy was that bothered with fireworks last night that she didn't come down for her tea and then didn't want to come out for supper, I got some of it in her at 3.30am.

My colleagues have that opinion Patti, but they like Christmas enough to talk about it from July! How annoying they haven’t sorted out your paperwork, glad you have found some voluntary stuff to do. Impressive that you can print a stamp Lynne, no good here though, no printer! Glad that son-in-law was able to collect.

That's the way to do it, don't let them grind you down.

Here, in this town, because most people cannot work from home, and with parents doing the school run, the lock down isn't a major thing

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4836 comments Another staff case - so staff is quarantining at home, and the two residents exposed will not be allowed out of their apartment for two weeks (will be interesting - the staff person is required for them, so don't know how that will be handled).

And we went to dinner with friends last Friday, and will do so again tomorrow - kings and queens have been negotiated into marriage with less fuss.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments My best friend and her family have finally made it into Qatar. Thank gawd.
They've been drifting around the UK since they left their job in India, trying to get visas to get in to start their new jobs in Doha. Not easy with two little boys.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12595 comments Lovely sunny day, so am going for a socially distanced walk as that is allowed this time! I do feel like we are just playing at a lockdown this time and that it won't have the desired effect so it will go on longer, despite certain people being adamant, I think that is utterly foolish. Eye feels better today.

Sorry that you have had more cases Alicia, but glad that you have been able to have dinner with friends, it's the little things that will help us get through this. Glad you best friend has got something Patti.

message 14577: by Alicia (new)

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4836 comments We get another dinner with friends tonight! We have been approved (otherwise we'd just eat the same meal, separately, in our own apartments) to go to the dining room and sit at the same table (distanced from other tables, and with masked staff).

We are being as careful as possible - negotiations ahead of time were necessary - but I hope all four of us will survive.

Compared to what some people out there are doing, it is safe, but I will worry anyway. At our ages (combined is at least 300 years), it is wise to be careful.

My lady wife has been watching the cases as they are reported. In the North the number of cases is falling in many areas and certainly there is no sign of an 'exponential rise'
My guess is that just as the first lockdown happened as cases had peaked and were starting to drop, so this one's the same. If you look at the 'excess deaths' graphs for all European countries, they show the same curve pretty much whatever they did.

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments One of my daughter's flatmates has just tested positive. She now has a couple of symptoms and is waiting for a home test to arrive. I can't see how she won't have it, despite working and travelling across London throughout I don't know how you avoid it when you're in the same house. Sitting up here watching my husband's little remaining eyesight worsen I don't know I've got enough worry to go round

A ray of sunshine in this bleak year.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12595 comments Morning all, was woken up at 3am by what sounded like the neighbours smoke alarm going off, needless to say I didn't properly get back to sleep after. So feel drained and headachy and quite a bit of housework to do, might have to work out what is essential and what can wait till tomorrow. We had a firework set off at 10.30 am yesterday, I was just glad that Lucy was in at the time. Had a nice walk with my friend, she had an interesting theory that we are going to see cases drop as she feels the biggest cases are in schools and there are only so many people it can pass round, as clearly not everyone coming into contact is getting it. Pleased to hear the presidential election results, some good news in this dreadful year.

Glad you managed to get another meal with friends Alicia, how do you feel about the results? Sorry that your daughter is having to wait for test results R, and that you have the worry about husband's eye sight.

Lynne (Tigger's Mum) | 4643 comments I’m halfway through my quarantine, I think I’ll make Christmas puddings if I’ve got everything needed. If not I’ll still make them. They aren’t really critical. It’s just stodge with fruit in. I usually resent having to stay hours watching them steam but as I’ve got nothing else to do I may as well. Husband loves Christmas pudding. I make a couple of bigger ones and lots of individual ones in ramekins.
Concerning the USA elections. I don’t know why but the phrase ‘Be careful what you wish for’ keeps coming uninvited into my thoughts. I’m not impressed by all of the candidates both sides. I honestly don’t think I could have voted.
Keep trucking Rosie, this year has been such a horror it’s got to get better.
We had fireworks nearby too last night Desley. That’s three nights running. I just can’t tell where they are coming from but I know where I’d like the next one to be put.
Take care all. X

Lynne (Tigger's Mum) | 4643 comments I sincerely hope the political situation improves for all my American friends. They all, without exception, wanted this change. I’m just so pessimistic at the moment as many politicians worldwide seem totally unfit for office.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12595 comments Nice and sunny here, which means working in the office is aggravating my light sensitivity, good job I’d only planned to do half a day. My telephone friend has Covid, she feels dreadful with it, and worryingly she is high risk. Tempted to increase checking in on her to every day, but then you don’t always want to speak when you are feeling ill, especially as she has a really sore throat. We had fireworks again last night, getting so fed up of them, they were earlier last night just as Lucy had braved going out.

Let’s hope Biden can help Alicia. I think Covid went against Trump.

message 14589: by Alicia (new)

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4836 comments Thanks, Desley. I hope your friend has the support she will need. I know what it's like to KNOW you're high risk.

45 never rose to the level of someone who could handle covid.

Biden has already created an advisory team with actual experts.

He inherits a huge mess, but he knows that. Now we need to make sure ALL Americans benefit, not just those with connections, and Biden still has to battle McConnell in the Senate.

But I can do nothing, and so I withdraw, ready to follow instructions when a vaccine is available, and using precautions to try to ensure I'll be here to benefit.

Stay safe out there.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12595 comments Urgh, what a frustrating morning, I had an 8am meeting that I wasn’t sure how it was going to go, so of course I didn’t sleep well! Something made me switch the computer on early, and it was a good job as I couldn’t get on e-mails, which meant I couldn’t have done a teams meeting, so had to ring our IT guy at 7.45! Then we had some other technical issues, so it’s been a frustrating morning, I’ve now got some extra work to do but struggling to get my head in gear. Wish I was Lucy today, she is just curled up asleep on the bed!

Sadly, I think she is struggling support wise Alicia, she lives alone and the person who has been going into help is the person who has passed it on. Hope Biden’s advisors help.

message 14591: by Alicia (new)

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4836 comments That would terrify me - being home alone with something that can turn any instant, and also not having my usual support.

Biden won't be in charge until after Jan. 21, 2021 - that's way too long for way too many people. Even if he hits the ground running, which he intends to do.

This administration is making things as hard as it possibly can.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12595 comments Our h & s guy rang me just after our meeting yesterday for a catch up, so I grumbled to him about my meeting (basically I have to re do the majority of some work I was doing in March and April!!), so this morning he left a bag of sweets and chocolate on my doorstep! Good timing, another colleague had annoyed me just before he did that. Rang my telephone friend last night, she had rang an ambulance on Mon as she had such a bad coughing fit, but they said her sats were fine so she was best off at home. She’s had friends drop off food and supplies for her, but everyone kept coming at once, so she was rather tired.

Yes, it is my concern too Alicia. How come there is such a delay in the presidency? Hopefully he won’t cause too much damage.

M.T. McGuire (mtmcguire) | 8049 comments Blimey everyone sounds like you folks are all having a rough ride. Hope things even out soon. I’m not doing brilliantly with the knee. It stiffens up so much at night that I hardly get any sleep. Days are ok but nights are really hard. It’s really tight so bending it is tricky and it’ll go flat at night so I can lie on my back but only if I stretch it out pretty much all day. I knew it would be tough and it’s full of scar tissue from other ops before we start which doesn’t help. But ugh. It’s so frustrating trying to balance enough exercise with too much.

We’re getting there slowly but ... it’s taking so. bloody. long. Head desk.

Oh for a decent night’s sleep. I fantasise about sleeping more than four hours and sleeping through without waking up.

Never mind, a few more interminable weeks will slip by and it’ll happen. I’m just at the wrong end of the recovery curve.

Morning all!

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12595 comments Woke up at 2am, decided when I was still awake at 5am that I better re-set the alarm, as I don’t need as much time to get ready working from home. We are currently trying to gather more data, which means things are taking twice as long for me, I hadn’t got through everything yesterday and switched my e-mails on to find loads more that needs doing, so felt a bit stressed as well as tired! Oh well, better to be busy in the current climate, and as much as certain things are now taking longer, I’m actually quite excited as people are actually taking notice of some of the things I input now, so doesn’t feel wasted anymore. And as if the house wasn’t untidy enough, Amazon have sent this months subscribe and save early again, so have to store stuff till I can get it distributed. Had a letter from maxilla facial department last night, wondered what on earth it was for till I realised it must be my triage app for the referral in March, ironically that is part of what had me up in the middle of the night, it was really throbbing. That ended up being an interesting lunch break, had to put neighbours cat in and other neighbour had a friend round, who pointed out my suspicion that my tyre is going flat again, it’s due for an MOT next month, so just going to buy a new one. Turns out he is a semi-retired plumber, so he’s going to fix my leaking kitchen tap, he’s always seemed standoffish, but was really friendly and chatty today.

Glad that grandson has only twisted his ankle Lynne, must have been a worry for you. Sorry to hear your knee isn’t doing so well MT, I do hope it settles soon for you.

Lynne (Tigger's Mum) | 4643 comments I’ve just spent three hours trying to get a Tesco delivery for Christmas. I’m so glad I’m a valued customer with preferential treatment - what a farce!
I got one for the Sunday anyway - before not after, I hope. I got really confused. I think the site crashed. Anyway we shan’t starve.
I actually chose to base my office at home I really enjoyed the freedom and the cost saving was important Desley.
Mary my bunion op took me off my feet completely for 6 weeks but there’s was no physio or exercise of any sort. Purely rest. I did that well. My OH looked after me totally.
Little lad had a lovely birthday - we FaceTimed him and had some video clips of him, his ankle seemed to hold up well when he was jumping for joy opening his gifts.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12595 comments Didn’t get woken up till 6am today. Turns out my brother definitely can’t come to the funeral, as nephew has come into contact with someone so they are self isolating, you have to have 2 negative tests in Jersey, the first has come back negative fortunately.

Glad that grandson didn’t let a sore foot stop him enjoying his birthday! Now that I have a more relaxed boss I'm enjoying the freedom Lynne, but not sure about cost savings, realised how much milk I drink! Wow, that has put me off wanting my bunion operated on!

Lynne (Tigger's Mum) | 4643 comments No driving for months after the op either Desley. You think it’s s small op but they reposition the long bones in the foot as they distort the joint it’s not just the toe that points in the wrong way.
I had about 20 stitches in each foot and staples and screws, it’s quite a feat of engineering. Scuse the pun 😁
