Jim | 21810 comments Someone asked me would I wear a mask if I had to travel on public transport.
I merely pointed out that being rural I was more likely to meet a dragon than a bus :-)

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12597 comments Morning all, rubbish sleep, but sun is shining. Glad I've got to be up for our team chat, the diggers have been starting at 7.45ish every day. Was happy yesterday, my mouth was much better and I could eat sweets for the first time since Mar. Just yawning hurts now. Don't know if I mentioned my work have decided rather than allowing us to carry over bank holidays, we will fet paid for them, if we were furloughed before easter we can ask for those to be backdated (I can get Easter Monday) and the late May bank holiday they are making into a week, taking 4 days off our entitlement. I wasn't sure at first, but realised 4 days full pay now would be better.

Sounds great - and like they want to keep their employees when work resumes. Bird in hand is usually better. Glad you can enjoy your food more!

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12597 comments Morning all, another sunny day. My mum had to go onto hospital again yesterday with her COPD, it isn't looking good but she is on a respiratory ward with covid patients so we aren't allowed to visit. I'd already agreed to volunteer this morning, delivering frozen airplane meals, I figured I might as well continue, will take my mind off it.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12597 comments Morning all, happy VE day, afraid I am rather grumpy. My mum is fine, but the first thing she did when she was allowed to make a phone call was to have a go at my sister, which I think is really selfish. They did threaten to send her home last night because of the bank holiday, but she is still in, so they seem to have changed their mind. Volunteering was interesting, I drove to a depot, had to wait for the delivery, but that was fine as a colleague was also volunteering, so we had a chat sat in our cars, then I had to drive to a community centre to deliver them, although the sat nav wanted me to go take an exit off a roundabout that no longer exists, so at the second time of going round in a circle, I switched it off and pulled up google maps on my phone, but that wouldn't talk to me, so had to keep pulling over to see whether I needed to go left or right, wondering how people coped without sat navs! Got close and had to ring the woman I was meeting, but eventually made it! Was going to do some food shopping on the way back, but the queue was that long I couldn't face it (and needed a wee!), so came home and went to the co-op, but was so uninspired I only came back with bread, yoghurt and ice cream, so will need to go somewhere else at some point. Did finish my book, but sat on the doorstep, which has flared my sciatica up, and this morning my knee is dodgy, so think I'll have to skip my walk and have a sofa day (although sitting is painful). We even had some rain yesterday. Cloudy today

Lynne (Tigger's Mum) | 4643 comments Sounds a busy day Desley, You put me to shame. Does your mum live near any oil seed rape fields as that’s can really give COPD sufferers a reaction. I can see some yellow fields across the waterway so although it looks lovely it can be bad for sufferers.
I’ve got new lovely neighbours. They really are quiet and thoughtful.
They are also German and I don’t want to upset them. I wouldn’t know how to broach the subject either so I’m almost glad there’s no overt street celebrations for VE Day on our road .
My daughter’s street on the other hand is the opposite. It is really decorated and they have a thriving street party community for every and any occasion. They’ve been dressing up, singing, clapping and dancing for weeks.
Have a good day all whatever you’re all up to.

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4836 comments Sciatica is no fun, Desley - I'm battling mine right this minute. Doesn't want to let me get to sleep.

I hope your daughter's neighbors are staying well apart, Lynne - a celebration isn't an occasion to catch something. We're still in total lockdown, and don't know how long it will be for, but there's no vaccine yet, and I'd rather not go quite yet. A few people I know have had the virus, and have been sick for over a month.

Lynne (Tigger's Mum) | 4643 comments They are keeping to their distances, they all have a little front garden and a wall from the street. We’ve been relatively lightly affected here being rural and distant to big cities but they are trying to keep tourists and visitors away. Not always successful though. I don’t know what will happen when everyone starts to go out again though. It’s quite a problem that some of the easing of restrictions seem unthought out. My neighbour in France is very unhappy about not seeing her grandchildren but when the school goes back she is expected to resume the sessions when the schoolchildren have a class in the garden three of them rent off the community. She said I can’t see my own but I might expected to mix with 15 strangers’s children. Her husband is immunocomoromised as he’s had a transplant kidney. I don’t know how that will work in a lot of similar situations.

M.T. McGuire (mtmcguire) | 8049 comments Desley and Alicia, another hands up here for the sciatica club! Although mine is down to a pathetic glute so I have to do some different physio exercises and it should wear off a bit. I've been walking too much. I really need to lose weight because I'm too heavy for my knees but how I do that in a way that keeps it off I don't know. Low GI works well for me, but it only keeps me where I am. I've not found anything that takes much off.

Anyway, hope we all feel a lot better soon. I'm going to sit in the sun this avo while I have the chance!

Cheers

Let us know when you find the effective magic potion that removes excess weight (the body's responsibility, not mine) painlessly while we sleep. I'm so tired of it being MY job.

message 13613: by Kelly (new)

Kelly Clayton | 1040 comments Sorry about your mum, Desley. Good re the 4 days extra pay. Lynne, so right re the warmer weather.

Had a bit of an accident on Thursday night. Our kitchen is going to get redone at some point, it's really old and possibly hasn't changed since the '70s.

The units are heavy wood, really heavy. There is a large door that covers and is sort of attached to the fridge door. I opened said door and the damn things fell off its hinges and smashed against my little toe. Oh!!!

Looks like a little fat bruised chipolata. The pain! The skin and nail are bust and it looks terrible. At least I don't have to try and wear a work shoe. Think positively.

message 13614: by Alicia (new)

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4836 comments Ouch, Kelly!

Hope nothing is broken, bone-wise.

Here they don't even splint little toes, but I think it helps a lot if you gently tape it to the next toe or toes, so it doesn't get jiggled around and cause pain every time you move.

message 13615: by Kelly (new)

Kelly Clayton | 1040 comments That's a good idea, Alicia. Thanks. Looks slightly more like a toe today, albeit a chewed up one!

It's Liberation Day today - 75 years since the island (Jersey) was liberated from the occupying forces. Usually a huge celebration, re-enaction of the flag being hoisted etc Much to be grateful for but we'll all celebrate quietly at home.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12597 comments Morning all, tried having a sofa day yesterday and got bored, luckily I remembered it is my friends birthday today, so wrapped her presents and asked if I could drop them off yesterday, we sat in her garden at the correct distance apart to have a chat, much to her husbands annoyance! She is halfway between my house and Lidl, so called there after, got some fresh food and fruit. Unfortunately got home to discover I only had a pint of milk left, so pulled the last bottle of frozen milk out. Phone says its currently 17! Supposed to be cloudy this pm but they said that yesterday and it was lovely, so hopefully will be sat out reading this pm. They sent my mum home last night, but my sis has been warned this will become a regular occurrence. Not sure if I mentioned last week, I got an e-mail from the energy company saying they'd assessed my final bill so will be reducing my payments by £15 a month, so swapping has halved my gas/electric bill, fantastic timing.

I'm surprised my walking hasn't affected mine MT, it was foolishly sitting on the doorstep. Sorry you two are both having sciatica issues, it really is no fun. Sorry you have injured your toe Kelly, do hope it heals quickly, but do keep a close eye on it, with your diabetes.

Jim | 21810 comments Desley (Cat fosterer) wrote: "Morning all, tried having a sofa day yesterday and got bored,.."

reminds me of years ago a bunch of us were on a cycling holiday in Southern Spain and we stopped for a rest day, deciding to have a 'beach day.'
After an hour lying on the beach reading we got bored and hired a pedalo and 'cycled' out on that and went swimming from it :-)

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12597 comments I would have no issues lying on a beach reading :)

message 13619: by M.T. (new)

M.T. McGuire (mtmcguire) | 8049 comments Lordy, Kelly hope the toe recovers. I'm like Desley I can sit on a beach and look at the different grains of sand for hours. Then again, I suppose weird is part of my job.

I went for a bike ride today, expecting to come close to dieing as I rode up the hill but ... nothing. Likewise I rode all around town at a fair clip without feeling particularly knackered. When I got home I discovered I'd done some fairly vigorous exercise but I still don't feel that stiff or knackered. Such are the benefits of 40 minutes walking without stopping every day. It gets you really fit. I'd forgotten how well it works.

Hope everyone is having a lovely weekend.

Cheers

MTM

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4836 comments Riding may be easier on the knees, MT.

I can't walk or stand, but love my excursions on the trike - and the fact that I can slow down or stop any time I want to, without dismounting.

And it keeps the joints limber.

Definitely. I've been walking because the garden is too small to ride the bike but just 40 minutes a day without stopping while I talk to my mum is enough. It's amazing.

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments Morning all. Bit of a change in the weather today - spent most of yesterday outdoors working in the garden. Gales from the north today and temp has dropped 15 degrees! They've got snow further north too. Ne'er cast a clout till May be out, right enough

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12597 comments Morning all. We had 22 yesterday and today is forecast high of 9! Was woken up about 6.30 with the wind. Plan to take advantage of a cooler day to clean the microwave and oven, then going to treat myself to a pamper in the bath, see if the colour shampoo still works (it's rather old!) and finish my book. Not sure what news we will get this evening, but appears a lot of people don't want any changes making. Was watching a medical show from the early 20th century this morning, eugenics was making an appearance, I find it very troubling.

Wow, can't believe places have snow R! Happy Anniversary Alicia, nice that they made you a nice meal and cake.

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments There are a few flakes of snow falling here now :(

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Take care of that toe, Kelly!

Chilly now after such a gorgeous day yesterday. Fleeced up the toms and peppers tonight. They're still in pots so we've moved them to a double glazed garden room and covered them over.

Waiting to hear what Boffers has in store for us next. Lumme!

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12597 comments Morning all, its just started raining here. Ironing this morning, then going to do my hair, was too late last night. Supposed to be going for a walk this afternoon, I do need Lidl as my neighbour forgot to get sugar for me on sat. Might have to watch a film instead.

Lynne (Tigger's Mum) | 4643 comments We’ve been really lucky with weather we were the warmest place in Wales yesterday. 21° we set the table outside to eat, but it got too windy for the parasol and too sunny without it so we came inside to eat. - as I came in I heard the weather forecast and that there was snow in some parts of Scotland. It’s colder today but still sunny. It’s husbands birthday today so got to get my act together and do a nice lunch. He wants an apple pie for pudding so that’s my morning main job. Have a good day all.

M.T. McGuire (mtmcguire) | 8049 comments Really windy here, have just downloaded some stuff for McMini - track for him to play drums along with. Also started a model yesterday. So lovely to be building one of my own rather than fixing up one McMini has abandoned. Spent an hour and a half on the phone to my Mum. Blimey. But she loves to chat and I can make her laugh. Beginning to think that there is potential for a comedy sketch in the conversations we have ... think I might write it up.

Cheers

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments It was supposed to be another freezy cold windy day today, but it wasn't, so I was outside again.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12597 comments Am hoping for a better day today, my sister had to get the COPD team out again yesterday, when they discovered my mum's oxygen sats were down to 50, they rang an emergency ambulance, but were horrified to find she had been discharged on Fri, they said they would be questioning why that happened. She was being awkward again, she was snappy at my nephew, who refused to stay in the same room as her, but after she was taken to hospital, was in tears because something she said made him think it was his fault. We were told yet again that there was a chance she wouldn't be coming home, in the afternoon were told it was a severe chest infection. At teatime, we had a drama, she was trying to self discharge because she wanted a fag and was refusing treatment, even though they told her she only had hours left without it. They found a nicotine patch which seems to have worked, I've not heard anything since, so hoping that means she is still in! Between that and finding out one of my online friends had died, motivation was lacking yesterday and I felt drained by 6pm.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12597 comments And worse as shes on a respiratory ward with covid patients, so we aren't allowed to visit even if it gets to end of life care. She tested negative last week but I'm concerned all this yoyo'ing will put her at higher risk

Grey and chilly here today - and that's only me! Must get into the veg plot and do some weeding before the weeds are taller than the broad beans.

All take care.

message 13639: by Lynne (Tigger's Mum) (new)

Lynne (Tigger's Mum) | 4643 comments Hope your mum settles a bit more and they can get her better Desley. I think we inadvertently broke the law yesterday. All was well till they changed the rules and daughter came over to wish her dad a happy birthday. We stayed in the front garden but i did have a big hug from the grandson. He nearly bowled me over. He’s grown a bit more - he’s such a big lad for 5. Hes really missing his little friends and his wider family. It’s hard for the little ones. They all hug each other so I don’t know how social distancing can possibly work in primary schools even if they halve the classes and alternate days like they suggested in France.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12597 comments Day got worse, they decided that as my mums oxygen levels were back at 86, they would send her home if she tested negative, even though my sis was concerned she'd only be back by the end of the week. Unfortunately, she was smoking when the ambulance arrived and refused to put her cigarette out so they made a complaint due to the kids, which has been passed to social services. Test was negative but patient transport have refused to bring her home, so she has been transferred to a clean ward and waiting to hear what the plan is.

So sorry, Desley. I'm glad they took your mum seriously and found her a nicotine patch - withdrawal is very hard on people even when they do it on purpose to themselves. That shows some compassion.

The low O2 sats are scary - and can explain a lot of erratic behavior. I also can't see how they could have sent her home.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12597 comments Well, appears she is still in hospital, just have to see what today brings. Nicer day so should get out for a walk and got my befriendee so will get in touch with them today, see how often they want a call.

Problem is, when I was a lot younger I worked with some of these men. Their idea of health and safety was based on "nobody is actively trying to kill us so it's probably safe' :-)
