Mwhaahahaahrgh! Ooops! I will definitely not be cutting any hair as I'm the only person in the house who can ... except my own!

I'm not bad at clipping hairy poodles. But I'm not sure it's a transferrable skillset, and am not about to start on K or the granddaughters

Katy | 2662 comments Hello, Desley and MTM! *waves*

I've been at work today and hating the rain! Looking forward to tomorrow being Friday!

I'm not sure I'd be brave enough to take the clippers to my hair, Rosemary! I have recently cut my fringe back in myself though. Husband cut his hair at the weekend. Called me in to tidy it up at the end! Looks like it does after he goes to the barber's so might do it himself in future!

Hope you're all well :)

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments Have reread your post Will, after spending some time pondering the concept of a transferable skillet...

I need to decide whether to just take the whole lot off tomorrow or carry it off as it is. I went for my weekly shop today and nobody looked at me twice. Of course perhaps they were too feart :D

message 13557: by Pam (new)

Pam Baddeley | 3334 comments Oh dear! I definitely wouldn't try to replicate that feat if I had clippers........

It bucketed down here most of the day till around 4pm and then brightened up. And a few were out at 8pm clapping again. I keep hoping more will join in but at least there are some - used to be just me!

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments We had a 2 minute rain shower this afternoon, whilst I was standing in the queue for the supermarket. That’s all, though. Everything is as dry as a stick.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12597 comments Morning all, raining again, although supposed to be sunny later, so will drop my friends parcel off and have offered to collect something for my neighbour.

Take the lot off. Then be photographed wearing a boiler suit.
Everyone will assume you're some sort of activist and on the strength of that you can see so many paintings you'll not be able to paint fast enough to keep up with demand ;-)

Will Macmillan Jones (willmacmillanjones) | 11324 comments The rain has given way to some intermittent, but very welcome, sunshine

message 13563: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Eh up! Hiya, Katy!
Potted on a lot of my tender plants yesterday - toms and peppers, squashes and cukes. Still got around three weeks here before we can safely assume no more frosts. I don't want them to get a check in too-small pots. All looking suitably lush.

message 13564: by Kelly (new)

Kelly Clayton | 1040 comments Howdy, finally have a moment to just sit back. Been catching up in the posts. there were over 200!

Raining, grey and windy. Lovely. This working from home is a nightmare. Have got next week off. We had planned to be in Spain. Instead, I have a week to work on my sideline.

We have a bank holiday on Monday - we kept the 4th as May Day, and then we have the 8th as a Bank Holiday. On Saturday 9th May it is 75 years since the Liberation of Jersey, how ironic that we celebrate in lockdown.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12597 comments Woke up and had no idea what day it was! Supposed to be dry but cloudy and cool today, so think I'll go for a walk after sorting out my bedroom.

Nice to see you Kelly, sorry you still hate working from home, think having a week off will do you good, even if you can't go anywhere, I believe you have been given a bit more freedom though? Yes, it is a shame liberation will be celebrated in lockdown.

M.T. McGuire (mtmcguire) | 8049 comments It’s sunny and not raining so I’m going to take the car for a run ... first time in six weeks, let’s hope nothing’s seized. Also finished a blog post.

Lynne (Tigger's Mum) | 4643 comments Nice to see Katy and Kelly. Don’t talk to me about cars Mary. I’ve just been rolling about on the drive under the car holding vital bits in place while OH is swearing at the front bit of the new exhaust. I haven’t done that in years. Used to spend most ‘courting’ weekends talking to his feet. He did put some cardboard down for me, how considerate! My hands are smaller than his so I get the fiddly bits to work on. It was a very tight fit but it’s on. The old exhaust was the original. Not bad for 27 years!

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments Another nice day here - we've not had any of that forecast rain bar one short snap shower. I have deployed my nematode army to deal with the slugs which i'm sure have been eyeing up my newly emerging hostas

Good luck with the gardening. I miss it. Not the nematodes, but just being able to do it.

When I get out for the trike rides, Davis, California, is absolutely gorgeous, and the honeysuckle vines make the air sweet everywhere (I think they don't usually get to invade as much!).

message 13570: by Kelly (new)

Kelly Clayton | 1040 comments The honeysuckle-sweetened air sounds gorgeous, Alicia. Hope the car was okay, MT.

Desley, yes, we can now be outside for up to 4 hours a day and meet up with two people from outside our household. I find it highly suspicious that the Nightingale hospital opens on Tuesday! However, The Government in Jersey aren't hiding anything from us - we are repeatedly told that many more of us need to catch the dreaded beast and that there will be more fatalities. I may moan about the difficulty of working from home but am grateful that I am able to do so, especially as a Type 1 diabetic.

Weather is shocking. Rain, sunshine, cold, colder, more rain. And that's just this afternoon.

Planted lettuce etc a few weeks ago then got busy and forgot all about them. They're actually doing okay!

Funny how easy everyone finds it to throw us under the bus, isn't it? As if they've just been tolerating us all along, hoping for a chance at eugenics.

Thing is, each one of us is as interested in continuing living AND contributing to the world as much as they are. They will be the first to complain when Life hands them their ticket, and they are no longer the in group, but one of us.

Civilized societies help those who need a little help because we are all in it together. None of us would be happy with a system which discards its flawed members.

The mark of civilization is that Type 1 diabetics can function fine in it. Did you ever read Lucifer's Hammer? A diabetic has an actual choice in a post-apocalyptic world. Stuck with me all these years.

message 13572: by Jim (new)

Jim | 21811 comments The difficulty is that people have to go out and work to ensure that life is safe for those who are vulnerable.
Here in the UK, we still have telephone engineers fixing the wires, making sure people have connectivity and broadband.
We still have people not merely growing food but working in plants processing and packing it, hauling it, moving it round warehouses, delivering it, putting it on shelves, selling it.
And we've got those who work for the utilities making sure that we still have electricity, water, and that the sewage does actually flow.
Without these people we wouldn't have a civilisation never mind an NHS. We'd have a lot of people huddled in the dark, rationing the battery of their transistor radio as they desperately tried to discover what was going on

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12597 comments Morning all, sunny again, so think I'll go for a walk again, went in a different direction yesterday and noticed a few interesting footpaths, so will investigate those this week. I noticed yesterday that there seemed to be more flowers than normal Alicia,

message 13574: by Lynne (Tigger's Mum) (last edited May 03, 2020 02:38AM) (new)

Lynne (Tigger's Mum) | 4643 comments I’ve experienced first hand one if the ‘ us and them ‘ situations. My daughter has officially finished with her company. The offer to accept a termination on ill health grounds had to be done by a solicitor. It was done and sent to HR before the deadline date given. A week after it hadn’t been received, another copy was generated and posted recorded delivery. At this point we were told they did not accept email. The recorded delivery item is still to this day in transit. They have now allowed an email version.
The irony is unbelievable. The HR staff are working from home to protect themselves from possibly contaminated mail. Who has to deliver all the mail and the parcels - the foot soldiers - the postmen and women who work for them.
Adding insult to injury the unused clean testing kits for the virus are sent out via another agency, once used they are collected by Royal Mail in the post. (Like the bowel cancer kits ). They really value their workers dont they!

✿Claire✿ (clairelm) | 2602 comments Morning all, nice to see you back Katy and Kelly.

Had a few days off after night shifts, back to work tomorrow. Spent yesterday baking bread and clearing out kitchen cupboards, felt good to be productive! Going to tackle another cupboard today I think.

Back in work tomorrow. I have a new mask as I'm allergic to surgical ones.... I now look like a monster from Dr Who!! It's getting some laughs when I'm at work!

I'm going to look up that book, Alicia. That's always been one of my fears - when my imagination is on overdrive - as to how I'd survive in a post-apocalyptic world (I know, I know! just can't help it.)

couldn't agree more, Jim. There are a huge number of people we (as a general community) cannot survive without - and hopefully, they will finally get the recognition they deserve and, crucially, be protected in this time.

message 13578: by Kelly (new)

Kelly Clayton | 1040 comments A misty day here and the rain is lurking. Got some bamboo to plant and will need to do it today, as too busy the rest of the week.

message 13579: by M.T. (new)

M.T. McGuire (mtmcguire) | 8049 comments Hello all, agree with Jim. I keep meaning to do a thing for our window but it needs to include posties, dustmen, farmers, pickers, BT folks, power workers sewage workers, the people who are still out fixing the street lights and the lovely people who are still working in our supermarkets, many of whom are older and at higher risk. They’re all epic.

Cheers

I think Lynne's comment puts the tin hat on it to be honest!
HR must be a very special place

Lynne (Tigger's Mum) | 4643 comments Waiting for Tesco delivery. Whoop whoop. Had to laugh last night it’s OHs birthday next week so I needed to put ingredients for his cake etc on today’s delivery. No SR flour available- they had only strong bread. coconut or even chapati flour but nothing for cake.
I think I’ve got enough flour but he helpfully suggested if he can’t have a birthday cake he’d be happy with an apple pie. Hmmmm don’t know what he thinks is in pastry :o). I’ll knit him one.

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Eh up! The Belted Galloways have been turned out on the farm behind us. I thought there was a lot off kerfuffle yesterday, mooing etc. They have a new trio of ginger belties, bought in from a Dales farm. They're in the field by the main road - lovely things.

Making crisps again this afternoon. Might try a little garlic in the oil I brush them with. Keeps the evil spirits away. Allegedly.

Now dealing with panicked technology averse clients who have been told that the only way for them to claim for their self employment assistance grant is online - and that I'm not allowed to help them or do it for them!

We run into problems with businesses (families) who aren't as much technology adverse as have no broadband and up until now they have been told by government that they'll just have to drive to an agent and have them do it

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12597 comments Well, that was an interesting walk, started in Lancashire, then went into Yorkshire, i do forget sometimes how close to the border I live! Found two reservoirs, the second had sand! I also managed to bump into a neighbour! Not only were we about 10 foot away from each other we were at different heights, so was interesting, but i said I'm glad I've finally walked round there, I don't think I'll look back on this and wish I'd done more cleaning, I need enjoyable things and fresh air, even if I had to put my hood up at one point cos the wind was hurting my ear! Bizarrely, my knee coped really well with the longest walk in a long time, but struggled kneeling to get something out of the cupboard under the sink! Used my reading spot when i got home too.

message 13590: by Alicia (new)

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4836 comments Went out for trike ride, and now my brain is mush. Typical.

Have to see if I can wake it up.

Davis is beautiful - flowers everywhere - but I have to go out before it gets too hot, which in this part of the year means before noon.

The heat is dry, but I can't take the garage part - it gets so hot I can't function safely to get the trike in and out in the afternoon.

I may try it, though - since I have my own trike I do get in and out a whole lot faster than I used to. I hate losing a writing day because of a mushy brain, but the body needs some exercise.

Last night I rode Maggie2 (the new Airwheel S8) out to the rose garden, but couldn't just sit there because too many residents had their windows open and their TVs blaring (deaf?).

Had fun demonstrating Maggie2 for residents who hadn't seen her.

And I took a shower first and wore a new dress - just because.

Hope everyone is safe. I worry about older workers who are vulnerable but who must work to eat and pay their bills.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Hi all

Sorry I've not checked in for a while. Goodreads has been acting up for me when I've tried to load it and we've also been manic with remote teaching.
I'm suspicious that the gov't had blocked goodreads for a while. dunno.
Anyway, I've got news.
We've accepted jobs in Madrid for September.
It's a properly run, well established school, which is exactly what we were looking for. Working there will also get on the road to getting permanent EU residency. So a good move, all in all.
Stay safe all. I miss you.

That's great news Patti.

message 13596: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Morning! Good news, Patti and Dave.

Still cold here in spite of the forecast. I'm going to hang on to my beans in the greenhouse before planting out. I was going to do it this week but forecasts of wintry showers put the wind up me!

Making fabric face masks today. I found a tutorial on Facebook - three layers, the middle one a close-weave flannel. Elastic was round the ears but I adapted it so it crosses over the back of your head. I'd be wanting to rip my ears off after ten minutes. They are washable, reversible (though himself wants the same fabric both sides... I'm having foxes on one side and chicks on the other. Just cos I can. I made one last week for my sister as she goes out into the big world to do our shopping. Don't think she wears it :( It makes you look like The Lone Ranger, admittedly, but if they say we can go out with one on, I'll have one.

message 13597: by Lynne (Tigger's Mum) (new)

Lynne (Tigger's Mum) | 4643 comments I’ve been making masks too, I put foam covered garden tie wire
(narrow not thick) for the nose shape it works a treat. Husband wanted tapes not elastic as he’s got a hearing aid and glasses already on his ears. There’s a lot on YouTube and it’s compulsory next week in France (and Spain - Pattii) on public transport and communal places so it may well be worth getting used to it.
Dobie, dobbed the hedgehog last night. Ouch! He only looked a bit too close, he’s a really good dog and the hedgehog scuttled off.

Lynne (Tigger's Mum) | 4643 comments No I’m not that talented Kelly, it’s only a bit of wire you can bend to keep it taut on your nose. It’s going to be warm wearing the things though in summer if we have to.
