Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments Morning,

There were 197 new posts so I haven't read them all.

I got my application in by the skin of my teeth, so fingers crossed. I start work in a local nursing home on Monday as well. Eeep.

Definitely the right decision Jim. I skid on a patch of ice on Tuesday and the car is possibly a write off, it's going to the garage today to be looked at. I'm okay, it was a very gentle accident from a passenger point of view, thought I'd be a little stiff after but I wasn't so all okay, kids weren't with me so I count it as a bit of quality reading time!

Happy Valentines to all.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12598 comments Didn’t have a good evening, I started feeling a bit unwell mid afternoon but decided to go to the co-op anyway, I got all the way to the till before realising I didn’t have a purse! Luckily it’s only about 800 yards away so I went home, got it, window cleaner found me on the way so I had to pay him, and then went back to the co-op. If it’d been just stuff for me I’d have left it, but neighbour wanted things too. Even with the extra trip, I still didn’t get my step count in! Lucy was very quiet this morning, was just contemplating whether I should give her an anti-sickness med as she came in and was sick! I might give her one tonight, they have a date of end Dec, but am sure they will be fine. Was going to try and get a new kettle after work, but still don’t feel great, so am going to leave it, I’m off on Mon, was supposed to take my neighbour to the hospital, but it’s been changed, so I can do it then instead. I’ll just nip to Lidl to get some fruit to last the weekend as I might not want to go out tomorrow. Had a card this morning from Zooplus, a Valentines card signed by Lucy!

Nice to see you Jud, do hope the car isn't a write off, glad you are OK though. You've reminded me, I need to ring about mine on the way home.

Will Macmillan Jones (willmacmillanjones) | 11324 comments Glad your Ok Jud. Car is just a car, at the end of it. Easier to fix than people.

Spent the morning working on compliance rubbish, and was delighted on checking to find that one of my clients has moved to

I'm tempted to set it up the business head office there, (and have stuff forwarded to me) on the grounds I'm sure it would cut down the amount of bumpf you get sent

Sorry to hear about your 'Bambi on ice' impersonation, glad everybody is OK
Hope the nursing home job goes well

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12598 comments Well, that did not go as planned! Neighbour asked if I wanted to do retail park and cheap shop, as rubbish as I feel, it meant I could get my new kettle and a few bits, we even got to call in at Lidl on the way home, so I got my stuff from there, so I'm good for the weekend. Ironically, I've been struggling for ages getting yellow things for my kitchen, had to buy a green kettle from Argos that looked more yellow. Next Thu Lidl have a load of kitchen stuff that comes in yellow! Had an issue with my amazon order, some of my friends' vegan milk had burst in transit, he thinks it's as easy as declaring it damaged and he'll be back with another, do hope so!

Sorry Jud, didn't notice you had a job, good luck.

Pam Baddeley | 3334 comments Yes good luck Jud. Sorry to hear about your car but at least you weren't hurt.

message 12958: by Will (new)

Will Macmillan Jones (willmacmillanjones) | 11324 comments If the milk burst in transit, Desley, what else got damaged?

Storm Dennis is arriving here. All the animals have sought out warm comfy spots and have settled in for the day

Morning all
The latest Frog News... St Valentine's day, as usual, and they are 'at it'! that'll be all through half term week so educational for the little grandchildren!! At least they have a nice wet and relatively mild day today.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12598 comments Think I've twinged my back from sorting out the parcels yesterday, storm has arrived. I feel better though, so might get the freezer and the tin cupboard sorted out, as I don't have much on and 3 days to do it in.

Fortunately not Will, my friend has 3 lots of milk, which gets split into two parcels, and it was the 1 lot by itself that was damaged, although when I opened the other box they were a bit battered.

message 12961: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Morning, all. Storm very quiet here till I went to the loo in the night and it was all blowing from that side of the house - the west. Our east-facing bedroom was lovely and quiet. Bit of the chicken-run roof blew off. It's fixable.

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4836 comments The pictures are not good - hope no one is under water.

Thinking of you all battening down the hatches.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12598 comments Bit windy here, but nothing compared to some of the pictures I've seen around Wales. Not sure we need this supercomputer, surely that money could be spent on flood defences. Off work today, left myself some housework for the morning, going seeing one of the rescue volunteers this afternoon with the tombola prizes I've been collecting and food shopping on the way home.

What you have to remember Desley is that a lot of flood defences are actually erected on the day of the storm itself. The country has a lot of flood gates that need to be closed and 'demountable' barriers that have to be erected
When the Environment Agency gets the warning from the weather forecasters, their staff are out there getting everything ready

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12598 comments I'm talking more about the permanent ones in West Yorkshire that still arent complete after 18 months, I read an article saying there was a hole in the partly built one in Mytholmroyd which is why they were so badly affected last week. One of the book shops in Hebden Bridge have had a new sign that is a flood barrier, very clever.

M.T. McGuire (mtmcguire) | 8049 comments Dennis may have done its worst but Gareth finished the audio. He hasn't rendered it so I haven't got it yet but it's done. Hoping I can manage to score Gareth some more work too.

We were on the quiet side of the house but everyone else found it was quite loud. I had a great night's sleep though. Shrewsbury was definitely moist today though.

Cheers

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments How do? Still cold here, but then, it's only February. I expect every month to do its best but some just don't pull their weight. At least we haven't had the floods. Those poor souls who've been flooded twice in four months must be cheesed off.

Will Macmillan Jones (willmacmillanjones) | 11324 comments The old barn here didn't cope with Dennis as well as it did with Ciara. So come the weekend I've a nice roofing project to manage

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12598 comments Well, completely different day than planned! Neighbour text at 9.50 to ask if I wanted a drive out to the hospital, she was setting off at 10.30! So had to quickly shower etc to be ready, amazing how much I can do in half an hour when I need to! Treated us to sandwiches from M & S, then we nipped to the retail park and cheap shop on the way home, got back 15 mins before I needed to set off to see my friend, who only had 45 mins, so I ended up nipping to home bargains, and still haven't finished the housework! But did have a nice day, and need to go back and see my friend when we have longer to catch up. Supposed to have snow at 9, will see, it has gone very cold.

Good luck sorting the barn roof Will, hope we don't have another flood this weekend as they said last week!

Jim | 21811 comments Will wrote: "The old barn here didn't cope with Dennis as well as it did with Ciara. So come the weekend I've a nice roofing project to manage"

Dennis seems to have hit different areas harder than Ciara
For us the big issue was Ciara hit at the same time as some really high tides and came in from just the right direction to drive the sea even higher into Morecambe Bay than it would have been without the wind

message 12971: by Kelly (new)

Kelly Clayton | 1040 comments Hope the job is going well, Jud.

Ah well, that 'll be a whole new garden fence needed thanks to Ciara, Dennis and whoever the one in between was that swished over us from France. Raining continuously, but what's new. Feels like it's been raining since September. (I've been counting - see what happens when you've got work being done on the house!).

message 12972: by Will (new)

Will Macmillan Jones (willmacmillanjones) | 11324 comments It was nice here yesterday. Tomorrow sounds like it might be wet again. I've put back erecting two small polytunnels until this burst of windy weather moves on

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments We had a fence go over on Sunday night too, but to be fair the posts were rotten at the base. So far this part of the country has got off very lightly - the snow was really bad ten miles inland last week but we had none. It's been windy but not much worse than we usually get this time of year, and when all those poor sods were getting flooded this weekend we had sunshine.

message 12974: by M.T. (new)

M.T. McGuire (mtmcguire) | 8049 comments It's a bit squally here in Melrose but that makes for some lovely rainbows.

message 12975: by Jim (new)

Jim | 21811 comments It's just windy, grey and occasional showers which hit hard when they come

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12598 comments Snow didn’t happen, but we did get a lot of hail. Forgot to mention, spoke to the estimator at the garage yesterday, he can’t see why my car would be written off, but couldn’t say how long it would take, so need to get round to speaking to the customer service bit to get it booked in.

Sorry you need a new garden fence Kelly, my neighbour only said last night she doesn’t think we’ve had such a wet winter before. I don’t mind rain at this time of year, as the alternative is snow. Sounds a wise plan Will!

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4836 comments Hope your car is fixed quickly, Desley. It's so inconvenient not to have it.

We still haven't bought one - husband isn't planning on it - but I'm finding myself unwilling to just get an Uber and go, even though I know it's much less expensive for the amount of travel I do.

Weird side effect of the move.

message 12978: by M.T. (new)

M.T. McGuire (mtmcguire) | 8049 comments Hope the car is sorted soon Desley.

It's been windy here and a bit squally - there was snow yesterday but only for a little while and it didn't sit. On the downside, as we were leaving the house to come away, I dropped my ipad and smashd the screen. On the upside, it's working and the finished fourth audiobook has landed in my in box! Woot! On the downside, I can't really start proofing it until Monday.

Cheers

In the UK it's recognised that for rural households where there is no public transport, a family pretty much needs two cars. But I have two daughters who live in major cities and neither have any interest in purchasing a car and haven't even taken the driving test.

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments My two daughters are non-driving city dwellers too Jim. When we lived in Edinburgh twenty five years ago we didn't have a car, it would have just been a nuisance and an unnecessary expense. In fact I didn't learn to drive until I was forty when husband lost his sight. (although as a youngster I was mobile on two (motorised) wheels!)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Good morning world!
I've found myself in the position of requesting, over the last month or so, four books from Netgalley. I heard no more. Yesterday they were all approved - so I'd better get my head down and read! I'd forgotten about one, given up hope on the other, but the last two were more recent.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12598 comments Will post properly later, had an all day meeting and we are only getting a half hour lunch break! Good job I bring food with me. I had driving lessons when I was 17 and hated it, so stopped, but then it was a condition of my current job, took me over 12 months to learn mind!

I suspect we'll all have to have our own. I also wonder what they'll do about tractors and similar. It would make far more sense for rural vehicles to be powered by biodiesel
After all particulates are only an issue in over concentrated urban areas

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12598 comments Well, that was a long day, and have a headache from not having my usual amount of drinks and snacks! Some of what we brought up in brainstorming was things that have been brought up numerous times over the years, will see if things change this time. A colleague asked yesterday if I wanted some books for the charity, I said yes, even though I don't technically volunteer anymore, will take them at the next fair. There is 3 less though, I haven't read those!

I agree Jim, it turns out my problem is gears, I'm fine in an automatic car!

I always have automatics, Desley. Much easier, and in many ways safer.

Jim, My parents took 13 and 14 test attempts respectively to pass in the 1960s. Whilst waiting to achieve a UK licence, they both drove around, quite legally, on legally obtained Irish driving licences. (They cost £ 5 each over the counter of a butcher's shop visited on a holiday to Eire. Available to UK or Eire citizens with no driving test required. Ah, happy, less regulated, days)

message 12990: by Jim (new)

Jim | 21811 comments Both my parents actually did do driving tests, indeed they did them even though they'd both have been given a licence for wartime driving :-)

But on a totally different topic, I was chatting to a lady last night, and she was flicking through her kindle app and pointing out books she had very much enjoyed. One was

Muriel's Bear

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Well, that's a lovely thing to read of a wet Thursday morning! :)
And it is wet :(

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12598 comments Wet and windy again, with a bit of hail occasionally. Had a letter from the doc saying I need a rheumatoid review and to make two apps, one for bloods, one to discuss, so need to ring and ask if I really need to, after seeing the rheumatologist twice last year and having at least 4 blood tests! Must also ring the car people to book it in. Lidl are doing the kitchen stuff today, so need to go on the way home to see how much I can get in yellow, although I’m thinking of getting the scales and some crockery in ‘blue’ – it looks more like my green worktops, the green is more apple green.

I never thought of automatics being safer Will. Never heard of being able to buy a driving licence, or being given one for wartime driving!

Will Macmillan Jones (willmacmillanjones) | 11324 comments Well you don't need to use your left hand to change gear all the time. Instead you can employ it in eating sweets, drinking coffee, changing the CD or as a last resort, steering.

Because they suspended driving tests etc during the war people were given provision licences
On 18 February 1947, a period of 1 year was granted for wartime provisional licences to be converted into full licence without passing the test.

Stocks seem fine here as its wet and windy again

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12598 comments Wet and windy again. Got everything I wanted and a bit more in Lidl last night! Couldn’t however get any milk, so need to go to the c-op after work, as well as the chemist as my brown inhaler was empty this morning, normally have to wait, but they did it as a one off. Might even get round to taking all the new stuff out of the car, and set it up in the kitchen. Got an e-mail from NowTV offering me a new deal, might use the free months that came with the box and the 2 month pass I bought last year at some point!

Thanks for the info Jim, learnt something new.
