SIL is home but no real diagnosis, it isn't meningitis but it's apparently 3 different viruses back to back with a post viral cough and fatigue. She'll be recovering for 3-6 months. Which reminds me, I must text her.

I've hardly slept the last few nights, really feeling it this morning. I need coffee.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12605 comments Hmm, got an e-mail at 4.06 telling me that my Yodel delivery had been delivered, and one at 4.15 saying it had been delayed – well, it should have been there by 15.24, so kind of right. At least my neighbour was back to take it in. Had a funny evening, was sorting out the pet food delivery when had a text from ratty neighbour asking if she could borrow my washing machine, as hers was broken, but I ignored it as I was busy, so she came over to my neighbours to ask her! I agreed to let her use it (not sure I’d have asked personally, as we have a launderette less than a 5 min walk away!), she brought it round but ‘forgot’ to bring the washing powder/fabric conditioner with her! Then she was chatting away while poor Lucy was walking round crying for her tea, and she was oblivious, I was willing Lucy to hit her, but she was well behaved. Then had to nip to the co-op and came back with more than I needed. By 9pm I was really stiff and couldn’t work out why – as soon as I got in bed I realised I hadn’t taken my tablets, I have an anti-inflammatory on a Thu, so no wonder! Couldn’t be bothered to walk back down the stairs though. Of course, as Fri is my late start, I was awake at 6.30! VetUK order is coming between 4 and 5, so I’ll be home by then, after that arrives I’ll wander round to Lidl for a few bits – was going to make up some lunches this weekend, but bought two reduced meals in Co-op so not sure I have enough freezer space, need a week of eating freezer food.

Glad you are feeling brighter Will. Sorry that SIL has got such a vague diagnosis Jud, hope she recovers quickly

Lynne (Tigger's Mum) | 4643 comments My dog’s daddy has just won the CC at Crufts and gone best of breed. His sister got the bitch CC and they also got the two reserves. His litter brother got the junior class and his grandma got the veteran. Dog royalty, whoop whoop.
Lovely and sunny here but quite cool and windy.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12605 comments That's impressive Lynne

Lynne (Tigger's Mum) | 4643 comments Yes they are really lovely dogs. Their temperament is excellent. He’s won for the last three years and the same bitch was best of breed last year. I’m so lucky to have had one of their pups.

You certainly lead a busy life, Desley!

I keep little spare caches of the critical pills, for travel or in my purse; maybe you could keep one downstairs. With paper and pen, and the purpose of replacing anything asap if you have to dig into the reserve. I do - I'm very careful to make a big deal over doing anything non-standard - don't want to take two of my prescriptions meds.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12605 comments Morning, so wild outside that I'm glad I have no plans! neighbour did invite me to Blackpool to see her granddaughter, but granddaughter wants to do some activity, not recovered from the last time! Have saved myself some chores so I have something to do, and will alternate that with watching TV and playing games I think. The sun is starting to come out now, so might be able to go for a bit of walk this afternoon. Got home last night to a parcel, was rather confused - was the spoon I won in the auction that was sent before Christmas!! DPD arrived and also had a parcel for ratty neighbour which I agreed to take in for her! Locking Lucy in my bedroom went quite well, she went under the bed when I shut the door, but came out quickly, and didn't fuss until 6.20. Will try this all week before letting the girls out overnight.

Funnily enough Alicia, since getting a weekly pill thingy, I've been really good, not sure what happened on Thu! before then I was really bad at forgetting to order so would always keep a couple of spares in my desk drawer for emergencies.

Took a while to get that package!

I remember British mysteries and detective stories that depended on the morning and afternoon post - and the postman brought social invitations. I guess there were fewer inhabitants back then.

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments Morning and second post are nothing - my neighbour when I was growing up in the late seventies, told me how when she had her first job as a junior in Aberdeen, she used to be able to send her mother a note home BY POST to tell her whether she would be home in time for her tea. There were four Royal Mail deliveries a day then. That must have been during the twenties. Who needs email?
Blowing a hoolie here, but threatened sleety precipitation has yet to make an appearance.

message 10116: by Jim (new)

Jim | 21812 comments I'm sure I remember one of the Sherlock Holmes stories where the great detective receives a letter, sends a reply, receives a reply back, contemplates and sends an invitation to join him. The person then joins him

I found this

Victorian London - Communications - Post - Delivery Times and Postal Regulations

Regulations of the Twopenny Post Office.- The principal office is at the General Post Office, St. Martin's-le-Grand There are, besides, upwards of 400 receiving houses for letters, both in town and country. There are seven collections and deliveries of letters in town daily, and five deliveries daily at all places in the environs of London, situate within a circle of three miles' distance from the head establishment in St. Martin's le Grand, that having been determined as the limits of the Post Office. The country delivery, as it is called, extends to a distance of twelve miles from the metropolis, and most places within that limit have four despatches and four deliveries daily (Sundays excepted). The hours by which letters should be put into the receiving houses in town for each delivery are as follow - For delivery in town,
Over night by eight o'clock, for the first delivery.
Morning by eight o'clock, for the second delivery.
Morning by ten o'clock, for the third delivery.
Morning by twelve o'clock, for the fourth delivery.
Afternoon by two o'clock, for the fifth delivery.
Afternoon by four o'clock, for the sixth delivery.
Afternoon by six o'clock, for the seventh delivery. For delivery in the country,
The preceding evening by six o'clock, for the first delivery,
Morning by eight o'clock, for the second delivery.
Morning by twelve o'clock, for the third delivery.
Afternoon by two o'clock, for the fourth delivery.

Remember our population density made this sort of thing viable, rather than a small population.

Kelly Clayton | 1040 comments As a kid I remember the postman delivering the mail before I left for school. It's interesting to think how we've gone from communicating by letter, to landline, to mobile, to text to social media and video chats. What's next, I wonder?

message 10124: by Jim (new)

Jim | 21812 comments apparently we're supposed to have rain AND hail today

With regard communications, a lot of people seem to be moving away from email to messenger and whatsap
It's now getting even more difficult to contact people. I now have people I contact on their landline, people I contact on their mobile number, people I contact through facebook messenger, and people I contact through email.
Talking to one daughter and her comment was that it's only people of an older generation who actually talk to her on the phone, the rest just do messages
I suspect our communications systems are going to get more diverse as companies all try and get us to use theirs

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments Morning all

We are to get some sleet today I fear

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12605 comments Morning, have been tossing and turning since 4, hoping I might get a nap in a bit. Wet at the moment, but we are supposed to have sleet and snow. Not sure I'll leave the house today, got my usual Sunday chores. Struggled with having a chill day yesterday, luckily a friend popped round with the gin I left last weekend, so we had a natter then I went to Lidl for some milk.

Not sure I like the idea of mobile phone implants! It will be interesting to see how technology changes communication. I used to get excited by post, now I can go days without getting any!

Kelly Clayton | 1040 comments Eh that was a stormy night. We're by the sea so little protection in front of us. Had to get up and lock the cats in about 4.30am as it was blowing a hoolie. The back of the house is usually relatively protected, but not last night. Still gusting away.

My husband's phone connects with his smartwatch, and it's funny to see him answering his phone, on his watch. We live in Star Trek times.

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments I can see snow, over the water on the hills of Fife, but we’ve just had a wee bit rain so far

Lynne (Tigger's Mum) | 4643 comments Lovely and warm here but windy. It is warm enough to eat outside if it’s sheltered. Damn processionary caterpillars are hatching. They can be lethal for dogs and ours managed to walk over a line of the dreadful things. They are moving northwards as we saw some in the champagne region just outside Troyes. Kids are fascinated by them but for them as well they are so urticant they can be blinded if hairs go in their eyes or lungs damaged if you breath in the hairs in the wind. Bugger!

I stayed up late last night to sew a dress, it isn't quite finished yet but I'm really pleased with the result. I haven't tried it on yet though so I might change my mind when I do!

We had horrendous weather at the weekend, it didn't know what it wanted to do. There was thunder and lightning yesterday with the hail. Today seems to be nice and sunny although cold and blowy.

I hope everyone is well :o)

OH tinkering with his car for a change 🙄 I’m off to live the highlife and take the rubbish to the communal bin and recycle bins. There’s no collections from the door just bins and recycling thingies at strategic points. Seems to work quite well in a small village. I’ll take little dog with me so that’s another job done.

I think I'm alright with the idea of mobile implants. I spend far too much time 'self-editing' what I'm saying that more often than not I can overthink things and lose the momentum of a chat, so my instant gut shot reaction being put out there might make life more interesting!

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12605 comments Well, turns out it’s a good thing the plumber has been too busy to come out, the cold water tap on the bath has now started to act up, so my bath was too hot last night, which meant my foot was really painful in bed, then Lucy laid on me and made it go to sleep! So had quite a disturbed night sleep, but Lucy stayed on the bed till the alarm went off. Weather much better today, but hand and foot are sore. Had another e-mail from the energy company, still has the wrong direct debit amount on it, tempted to leave it, I’ve already pointed out to them once that it is wrong, but I may end up owing them money at the end of the year!

Hope you like the dress when you try it on Jud! Hope the kids let you sleep better tonight Ben. Glad the dentist got you in and you got the optician rearranged Kath.

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments I feel your pain Ben. Our bed was blissfully child free last night but over the weekend we had both of them in! I'm very glad we opted for a king size when we moved. Fingers crossed you sleep better tonight.
