I should get up and wash the kitchen walls before it dries to concrete.

I'm not sure I'd do it if a random stranger asked me to! Its a lot different to being asked to catch a rabbit in your lunch break, downside of driving round with a cat carrier in your car! Poor thing was heavily pregnant, not sure how she outrun half a dozen people!

message 9804: by Jim (new)

Jim | 21812 comments I'm obviously a remarkably convincing random stranger ;-)

But actually I genuinely assumed she'd already held it to do what she'd done
Anyway she's a lady I've a lot of respect for, haven't a clue what her name is and I might not recognise her now if we met :-(

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4841 comments Gak! Hope you're both better by now. I don't like being sick, but I liked it a lot less when I had a sick kid.

I still worry about them.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12606 comments Morning all, had a rubbish night sleep. Got a nurse app at 9, on the way back need to pick up bread and milk for my poorly friend, and something from a different shop for my neighbour. Only other plans are to do a bit of decluttering and sort out a few appointments, but might have to have a nap

It does make you wonder how she got the weight off without touching the swan!

G J (Gaff to my friends) Reilly | 1836 comments It's warm for 6 degrees here in the valley. Very little breeze and the sun's trying to make an appearance. Let's see what the day brings!

Benjamin Appleby-Dean (benjaminappleby-dean) Morning, all. Having a 3-day week this week, so I'm looking forward to being off tomorrow.

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Morning. Food shopping to do. Husband had to do a quick repair to the back fence to stop the horses in the paddock from getting into the garden. Fence blew over in the recent high winds. It needs mending with a new one, as they say.

message 9810: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments Morning

I'd probably hold a swan or try to) but only out of ignorance of why other people wouldn't dream of it.

Nathan's appointment went really well yesterday, he was straight over to the toys, built a block tower and completed the jigsaw. I was worried that he wouldn't know what to do with the jigsaw since I don't think I've ever sat down with him to do one but he didn't let me down! We have to go back when he is about 3 to make sure his speech is coming on okay, he's a wee bit lacking in words.

Hope you get your nap Desley :o) I could do with a nap too but I'll have to make do with coffee instead. Will have to wait till 11:30 for that. Stupid meetings.

Anna Faversham (annafaversham) | 1752 comments Hold a swan - I'd love to hold a poorly swan. I'll add that to my bucket list.

I was sitting in a deck chair on the beach some years ago, on my own - only one other person on the beach, and a swan waddled up to me and sat alongside and stayed there until almost evening. I was in seventh heaven (I wonder where that is, must investigate). In recognition of its sterling service in keeping me company, I have included it in my current scribblings.

Hope everyone is getting better - whatever you have or are doing. Dentist tomorrow... haven't been for four years or so the surgery told me.

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments Morning all, it's mild here today so I've got all the windaes open for some nice fresh airing. Sadly that's letting all the building racket in as well :/

I would be very wary of swans - they're hard!

message 9814: by Will (new)

Will Macmillan Jones (willmacmillanjones) | 11324 comments I'd just got over the tax returns and then was hit by a virus that laid me out in bed for three days.

Still not right, and of course, as I start to come out of it, K goes down with it.

Better news is that the repair of the barn damaged in November's storms has finally been scheduled by the builders.

I was a complete coward, I didn't dare touch it. I wondered whether it regarded me as a wind break!

Mild here too and windows open for the same reason, Rosemary.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12606 comments Well, not sure why my doctors tell you to only discuss one thing in your appointment, the nurse wasn't concerned about the issue I went with, so wanted to do 2 reviews first. Good thing is I've lost 2lb. Didn't manage to get my friends bread but made her day by popping a couple of DVD's and some sweets in her bag, figured if she's been in bed all week she deserves a treat. Got loads done including a walk, however the shop had had a new donation of books, came home with 6 but giving one to a friend. Now chilling for the evening.

Sorry you've been ill Will, shame K has now caught it too. I did get a nap Jud

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments Morning

Feeling a bit bleary this morning, both kids woke during the night, poor Kitty was coughing for about half an hour.

Finally finished Nicholas Nickleby, 36 hours of listening, or thereabouts. Loved it though.

Hope everyone is well. I hope it's not conjunctivitis Ben and just a random gunky eye.

I forgot to have breakfast *sigh*

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12606 comments Had a bit of a shock when I left the house this morning and had to scrape both car windows, I was aware the air felt a bit cold, but not that bad! At least it was light enough at 7.30 that I could drive without lights on. Think I did too much walking yesterday though, both feet sore today. Walked in with our chairman today, and his secretary hadn’t arrived, so thought I better offer him a drink, when I went in to give it to him, he was with the CEO, so thought I better offer him one too! Server was fine for the first hour and a half, apparently IT are hoping it will be fully back to normal next week. Going back to the shop tonight for bread for poorly friend, she asked if I also minded picking up humous for her, she seemed surprised I said yes, if I’m going for one thing, two is no different. Had a lovely moment with Chanel this morning, she was rolling round gazing at me purring, but then jumped up as if she realised she was relaxing too much!

Hope your gunky eye isn't anything too bad Ben. Hope the kids sleep better tonight Jud. Absolutely no rush whatsoever to unpack Alicia.

M.T. McGuire (mtmcguire) | 8049 comments Bleargh, hello all. Have had a pissy week. McMini was ill on Monday and Tuesday and was off school. Then he was well and went back yesterday so I drove 150 miles to look after more people; my parents. That was sad and miserable so I was looking forward to going to the gym today, a quick trip to the mechanics to look at an annoying glitch with my car and then chilling out, catching up on stuff I have to do and generally having a day to myself. No such luck. McMini has some mystery ague which affects his calves and he literally can't walk, to the point where I took him to the Doctor who established that the pain was genuine, not swinging the lead, but nothing more. He's now walking in such a weird way that once, whatever ails him goes, it'll be weeks more to get his calves to unknit and for him to be able to put his feet flat on the floor again. I've told him that if he still has it at the end of next half term week he will just have to start using crutches and go back to school. It's hard to be sympathetic when it probably hurts a lot less than my knee did the entire time at his age.

Meanwhile Dad has come back to us. He is himself, he knew who I was in hospital, asked after McOther and asked after McMini, but if he goes home to Mum, he'll just stop sleeping and go psychotic again so he has to go into a home. It's ages since he knew that the house he was in was his actual home, he thought home was the house he was born in.

When the time comes, it's not going to be pretty. I reckon I'll get half an hour's warning, tops, before he's discharged and transported over there. He needs it arranged so we can have carers with him, so someone he knows hands him over. He needs stuff he recognises around him because anything else is inhuman. Not that the system gives a shit about that sort of rubbish. Compassion? Fuck off! And the nurses don't see him as human, they see him as that shouty sweary pain in the arse as I witnessed when I suggested they use my presence to help dress him and change his nappy and five frightened nurses came to help me. I hate the system. There's no fucking compassion because no bastard has time for it; not for Dad and certainly not for us.

So life is a chuffing joy at the moment. And now to cap it all, I have to drive my car with the headlights on at all times or the front right indicator won't work. Electrical fault. Undiagnosed as yet. And if it's the light unit it's going to cost £999.99 for the part. The mechanic said that if that's what it comes down to he suggests I just drive with the lights on and not do the work until I come to sell it. My kind of mechanic.

On the upside, I got out into the garden this afternoon and did some planting and trimming with a great deal of assistance from the cat. He does like to chase traily bits of stuff as they are carried to the bin.

Cheers

MTM

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4841 comments Good morning, all.

Sorry your kids are sick, Jud. I know they have to develop immunities, but it was always scary and exhausting to have a sick kid - especially when it goes on like that.

Thanks, Desley. But I've promised myself I'll get help if the unpacking keeps not happening. Problem is there is less room here to have someone in. But I can't live like this very long - I've been living out of a suitcase since last May!

MT, so sorry about your dad. That's hard. I hope they find a place convenient for you. And don't let them put you off about McMini - children need to be taken seriously. That sounds very worrisome.

Happy Valentine's Day!

Anna Faversham (annafaversham) | 1752 comments Oh, Mary, my m-i-l had to be put in a home too and we watched her deteriorate from a woman who helped others into one who was very, very needy and kept trying to break out. My sympathy, and we don't mind at all that you tell us all about it.

It's as good a place to dump it as any
And dumping it in your blog is doing a lot of good, giving a lot of people the invaluable support of discovering they're not on their own
With your father it's obvious he has to be in a home.
With regard the nurses situation, it is a nightmare, I think too many people can become hardened to it all. Strangely I've seen less of that in care homes than hospitals. But I've talked to nurses and to them, the purpose of a hospital is to get well and leave. They know they struggle to cope with people who will never be well

message 9838: by Kelly (new)

Kelly Clayton | 1040 comments Mary, it's not dumping, it's sharing with people who care what you say. Yours is a path my husband and I may have to go down with his parents, so I selfishly soak up all you say.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12606 comments Oh no, Whittards have released two lovely sounding limited edition hot chocs – I might just cave, I’ve been so rubbish this month at being frugal that I might as well continue till pay day and try harder next month. My friend text me to thank me for picking her stuff up and told me I was a special person for happily putting myself out for others as easily and often as I do, I really don’t think there is anything special about picking up meds and a few bits from the shop for a poorly friend. On the way back, bumped into a neighbours nephew who is a similar age to me, he asked if I’d had a good Valentines day and when I said it was just a day, he gave me a hug, that was sweet. Had lovely blue skies this morning but needed to scrape the car again. Going to pick something up for my friend from the retail park and do a bit of food shopping on the way home.

So sorry that life has been so shit this week MT, do hope that McMini’s legs ease off quickly – could it be some kind of odd growing pains? Glad your dad is back to himself, and I hope when the time comes, it’s better than you currently imagine. Glad the mechanic has at least given you a workaround rather than charging you a load of money, my mechanic is like that too. You must be mad to be excited about 4 kids under the age of 5 Jud!

2. Tsundoku
Love buying books, but not too hot on actually reading them? Then you’re guilty of “tsundoku”.

The Japanese word describes a love of collecting reading materials but letting them pile up in your house without ever getting through them.

“Tsundoku” is a combination of numerous Japanese words: “tsunde,” which means to stack things; “oku,” which means to leave for a while; and “doku,” which means to read.
