Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Ulcers are scary. That's what Dave had a few years ago.

I'm on my friend's balcony having a cup of coffee-like substance. The woman has no coffee making facilities in her apartment so I've had to resort to 3 in 1! She really must do better.
Sky is coming up very red. I hope the weather is okay today.
I was wakened at 4:50am by the temple over the road. My friend did warn me about it. I thought the mosque near our place was bad but the temple here is worse. Wow.
It's getting cooler here. Only got to mid 30s yesterday.

Lynne (Tigger's Mum) | 4643 comments We got home just right. The day after, the French started go slows and blockades against the huge rises in fuel. I’m not surprised, we paid €1.70 on the motorway for diesel on the way down. It was an eye watering €1.86 on the way back. He’s still chuffing! We actually got non motorway diesel for €1.50 but it’s still now dearer than U.K there’s going to be massive inflation because of it. There’s also very big problems because despite the floods in the Aude, several departments haven’t had rain since July and they’ve declared an official agricultural state of disaster in the Indre and Doubs. The fields which should now have winter wheat coming along are dust bowls. It was really noticeable on our journey.

M.T. McGuire (mtmcguire) | 8049 comments Blimey, GL really sorry to hear, that sort of thing does give you a start.
I think the new tax stuff heralds the end of my self employed ness. I’m not sure what I’ll do from now on but I’ve never really done accounts, I mean, I publish a book every three years, which means there will be an invoice for editing and for the cover. It’s about £1.50 in each month and about £3.50 out. Crazy.

Patti, one of the joys of my local church is that it doesn’t start until 11 am.

Lynne that sounds grim, we’re on our way home today, flying though.

Kelly glad it’s improving and Ro well done for NOT falling down the stairs. Sheesh!

As for Mr Green, I think an NDA for something like that means it’s almost the press’ public duty to find a way round it.

Cheers

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments Morning

Had a rotten night's sleep. I was up late making a cake for Nathan's party and then half of it stuck to the tin :o(
Then Nathan was awake for AGES! Or it felt like it. Will have to ply myself with coffee today

Going out this evening for a Twilight Night by Fairy Light event in the local park so of course it was chucking it down this morning. I hope it runs itself out and it's dry later.

Our church used to start at 11:30! They moved it to 11am in September. 11am is much better, 10:30 would be best.

Be kind to yourself today GL (well, everyday but be extra kind to yourself today), that kind of news does knock you back.

Is it bedtime yet?

Will Macmillan Jones (willmacmillanjones) | 11324 comments To ease Mary's stress a little, Making Tax Digital right now will only apply to anyone with a turnover over £ 85000. After that, the only thing that's certain is the uncertainty.

Last night K and I did our first shift as official Seal Watch volunteers at Cwmtudy. sad to see the washed up remains of one newborn, but at least the puppy that's been on that beach for a week or two is still healthy and doing well.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12603 comments Typically, as my sciatica is bad, Lucy wanted to sit on me last night! Could barely get off the sofa after that. Coco didn’t get handfed last night, I asked her to use her mouth rather than paws, and I got a claw, so put them back in the bowl. Woke up early again today, when it is a late start. Ignored ratty neighbour who knocked on the door at 7.45, hope it wasn’t too important. Cleaner is coming today, and we are doing food shopping tomorrow, so not sure what to do with all my extra time this evening. Got animal supply deliveries coming tonight, have ordered tablet flea treatment and powdered wormer for the girls, going to use lick-e-lix! Coco bless her was playing with her tail last night!! Odd weather this morning, started off drizzly, then really heavy when I was driving, then by 10 we had blue skies!

Aww, being Seal Watch volunteers sounds amazing - even if you did have a sad sight. Sorry about your sad news GL. Glad the massage helped a bit Kelly. Glad your timing was right with coming home Lynne.

M.T. McGuire (mtmcguire) | 8049 comments Thanks for the reassurance, Will, thank you. Like Tim, I doubt I will ever be troubling them. Sorry to hear about the sciatica Desley.

Huge harvest moon rise over Luton last night as we drove home from the airport. Also, came in over the coast where I grew up. Sad to leave but we had a cracking night’s sleep.

A slightly weird thing happened on holiday.

We met a lovely old couple there, they had grown up children of their own, from previous marriages so I’m not sure if they were late life divorcees or widowers. She, in particular, adored McMini, said he reminded of one of her own sons who had died aged 40. Her husband was recovering from having his other knee replaced after two tough and painful years waiting. She’d broken her wrist just before they flew out. They were definitely going through a tough time, I think they like to walk a lot (they live in the Lake District) and with his knees they haven’t been able to do that for a while. They were also selling a house in Portugal so maybe were sad to be doing that, too. He was a sweetheart but quite taciturn, she was even more WYSIWYG than I am. Which is going it some.

On the morning we left she took McMini and McOther aside and said she’d arrived feeling extremely unwell and sad but that watching and listening to McMini being ... well ... McMini ... had been a wonderful tonic and she felt a great deal better because seeing McMini was like going back in time and having the son she’d lost back for a few days as a nipper. Then she gave him £20 to buy an air fix model when he got home.

I left McOther and McMini in the car and went and thanked them, myself and she told me, tearfully, to bring him back next year! I promised I would, gave her a hug and told her I hoped the son wasn’t recent but that I was so sorry. She said we would never know how much we had helped her.

I don’t really know why I’m telling you all this, but I suppose it’s because McMini is a perfectly normal, mischievous little boy but he seems to touch people in some weird way and half of me puffed up with pride and half of me is slightly worried. And it’s not really the kind of thing I can bang on about to my friends who have kids of their own because it makes me look like I’m painting him as some wonderkind! Whereas you lot are all that bit removed, so those of you with wee ones of your own know I’m not! Clearly I think the sun shines out of his arse because I’m his mother and that’s my job!

I think the phrase is ‘Mary pondered these things in her heart!’ Mwahahahargh! I should probably have been prepared for it, my brother used to have this effect and to a certain extent, my husband does. I just didn’t see it coming.

Cheers

MTM

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments Yes it was a fine moon and it's a fine looking day but holy moley it is baltic out there! Not sure that I will be venturing out much more other than a foraging expedition down to the High Street for the evening repast. And a bottle of wine ;)

Looks like I won't be going down the digital tax hole with HMRC either!

Lovely story Mary.

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Wet here. And cold. So just as well we weren't planning on going out today. Chicken run dash was enough, but Mattie came out to scratch and dig. Bovvered? Nope. She'll go back in if she doesn't like it.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12603 comments Morning all, woke up at 6, was going to get a cup of tea and watch some TV, but feet were that sore I changed my mind, just getting back to sleep at 7.30 when Lucy wanted breakfast, struggled to get down the stairs to feed her, so went back to bed. Woke up a couple of times but there was no rush to get up, so I stayed in bed till 10.45. Still feel a bit tired, but glad of the rest. Need to wash clothes today, and we are supposed to be going to a large Sainsbury's, can't say I'm looking forward to it now, feet are still so sore. Might go to my neighbours this evening to watch Strictly, I do like the Halloween one. Was naughty when I went to the co-op for my milk, came back with 2 books, they had a 20p sale on for a local charity.

Aww, what a lovely story MT, how nice that you just did what you would be doing anyway but managed to help someone regardless. I think some people just have that ability and I'm really not surprised McMini does, with some of the tales you tell of him.

message 8224: by ✿Claire✿ (new)

✿Claire✿ (clairelm) | 2602 comments Morning everyone, hope you've enjoyed the extra hour! Things have been plodding along here lately, exams are slowly coming closer!
My family came up this weekend which has been lovely as it was July the last time I got home. We went to the shelter I got Narla from yesterday, I miss her so much but I'm missing having the company as well and thought going along to see how I felt was going to be the best idea. Met a very cute black cat, she had me in tears when she purred at me, thinking I might be going back next weekend to have another look around. Feel guilty about thinking about another cat already but I don't think Narla would want me to be lonely. Had a neighbour's cat come and give me cuddles about a week after I lost Narla, think she was sent round on a mission to check up on me.

message 8225: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Sounds as though you're ready for another, Claire. Don't feel guilty. Narla has taught you cat-loving. Shame to waste it.

Fox in the garden this morning! We heard Mattie giving voice early on. Big old fox trying to get into her run. It's built like Fort Knox with half-inch weldmesh and a roof. Husband rushed out in trousers but no shoes and socks, or even shirt! Foxie had gone, but we're not complacent. Sure he'll be back.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12603 comments Well, we went to Sainsbury's to find they had 25% off clothes, so came back with a dress and a top. Didn't get the cake we went for though, so went to M & S food and struggled there too! Realised last night I forgot some of the stuff from Aldi though. When I was decluttering, amongst a lot of cat toys, I found my foot warmer/massager, so tried that last night, feet aren't as sore today, although poor Lucy was puzzled by the noise. Was awake for a couple of hours during the night, then woke up at 6 by Lucy, who obviously thought it was 7. Managed to lie in bed till 10, but couldn't sleep so just watched TV. Got a wash load on, need to clean the cat room, wash up and put the recycling out, then having a soak in the bath.

There is a poem about getting another cat Claire, I have tried searching for it, but can't find it unfortunately. None of them would want us to be alone, I do hope you can find another cat - you are actually helping 2, the one you give a home to, and the one that can then be given shelter with the space created. Wow, glad you have a very secure run Kath! Hope neighbours dog quietened R.

Lynne (Tigger's Mum) | 4643 comments Lovely catch up on all your news. Enjoyed them all, Mcmini is special, I’ve never met him but I love hearing about him. Not like the little ...... in the queue yesterday to pay for Halloween sweeties. The little sod ran at a pile of sweets in tubes and bit them. Then his little sister did the same. I put mine on the counter and left. Little swines.

I'm seasonally not doing my Christmas shopping, and we've sort of got the Remembrance service sorted :-)

Oh yes, and the contractor is coming today to get the last cut of silage, late this year because of the summer

M.T. McGuire (mtmcguire) | 8049 comments Claire I think all you have to look out for is the difference between wanting a new cat and just wanting Narla back. Sounds like you genuinely want a new cat from here. ;-) And I agree with everyone else, Narla didn’t sound like the kind of cat who’d want you to be miserable on her account. ;-)

Patti, welcome home, Benjamin hope you’re feeling better soon, Desley hope the sleep you had helps, Jim, that reminds me, I need to get a poppy.

Bought a pumpkin for 80p yesterday on the way to a dig. Now we have two, one for McMini and one for me. I’m going to do a Donald Trump pumpkin, after all, it’s the right colour.

Dig went well, found a fragment of Roman something and a Venetian Soldino ... in Norfolk ... which is not as unusual an occurrence as you’d think. Dead chuffed anyway.

Cheers

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments As it's Sober October I'm off down the village shop for a big bar of chocolate! The first day of November is my auntie's funeral so that's not going to be the best day for a good slurp. Weekend, here I come!

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12603 comments Woke up at 5.30 this morning, rather than my usual 6.30, hope that doesn’t last long! Then went down to find frost on the car for the first time, typically I couldn’t find the ice scraper, although I did find the de-icer, and used the time waiting to set the clocks in the car (it has two, and they work independently!). The roofs looked very pretty though. Put my winter coat and gloves on too. Lovely blue skies though. Need to nip to the retail park after work. Not sure if it was the rest, the massager or the bath, but feet are much less painful today.

Sorry you didn’t have a proper break Patti. Hope you are flu free now Benjamin. Can you post a pic of the arch when done Kath, sounds lovely. Would love to see a pic of the pumpkin MT!

Sorry you didn’t have a proper break Patti. Hope you are flu free now Benjamin.

G J (Gaff to my friends) Reilly | 1836 comments Afternoon all! It's a crisp, fine day in the valley, and just having arrived home from St. David's and the Pembs coast, I have treated myself to a copy of Sundowners by our own, very talented, Kath Middleton. This isn't a plug for the book, by the way. If it had been, it would have looked something like:

"From the author of Top Banana, The Flesh of Trees, Beneath the Ink, Ravenfold, and more, comes the brand new Sundowners by Kath Middleton. Get yours before the spoilers hit the internet ... Do it. Do it now!!"

So, anyway, guess what I'll be doing this afternoon? That's right, I'll be drinking coffee and reading Sundowners by Kath Middleton (available to download now from your local Amazon retail site*).
