Stacey Kennedy Week 2: Jaw and necklace
I read Outtakes from a Marriage by Ann Leary
Finished- 7/20/14
rating: 4 stars (seems like I'm rating most things 4 stars!)

Jaw: When I tilted my head up to sharpen the angle of my jaw- pg 49
Yellow: sending small yellow wads of snow and dirt all over his teammates and me. pg- 79
Wind: I pulled my fur-trimmed collar up against my ears and bent my head into the wind. Pg 91.
Emerald: - a pale emerald haze that seemed to hang in the air. pg 12.
Champagne: We sipped our champagne and even smoked a little.. pg 224.

Review- I liked this book a lot more than the Good House. I admit I did picture the characters of Julia and Joe as Ann and Denis Leary- I tried not to! But they kept slipping back in...

Julia is the stay at home wife of Joe Ferraro- currently and actor on a popular NBC tv series who is nominated for a Golden Globe. While out to dinner she accidentally dials into her husbands voicemail and is shocked when she hears a dirty message from a young woman. Reeling with the realization that her husband is having an affair, she begins to stalk him to gather more info before confronting him. This event sends her into a spin; second guessing her own life as well as her marriage. What is she doing with her life? a stay at home mom with a full time nanny/housekeeper with no time to write a book as she planned? Where did her life focus go? She continues to reel, the stress leading her to say and do things she normally wouldn't do- both a good and bad thing- as she tries to figure out who Joe is cheating with and how she will handle this. When she does confront him he almost gets her to believe the story that he isn't cheating but, in the end, he really is. The big, egotistical dope.

I really enjoyed Julia- she was very funny, even with the shocking revelation and how it will rock her world she kept her humor intact- it really worked. Her character was believable- I really connect to where she is in life as a mother and wife and how we do start to reflect on the 'outtakes' of our lives at some point, if we allow ourselves to be honest anyway.

I was fine with the unresolved nature of their relationship at the end- she had a lot to think about and two kids at home. I do wish there was a little more to the ending however- the big climactic confrontation seemed a little anticlimactic. And I could have used a little more about how she was feeling- she did seem to find some inner strength and advocate for herself and her kids during the book which was good so even a little more of that to Joe before she jetted back home would have been great! Go Julia!

Yes we are!

Jennifer I've been including the half point for those words found by at least two of our team members. Is that okay, or would you prefer I take it out, and not enter any points until all four have found the word?

Jennifer H It doesn't make a difference. Which ever you think is best is fine with me :)

jingles | 639 comments Yes Stacey--that is perfect!

Last week I claimed 'egg' because you and Jennifer had covered it the week before and I couldn't find 'champagne'. Since I've already covered 'egg', this week I will hopefully find 'champagne'.

jingles | 639 comments The Paris Wife|Paula McLain - WEEK 3
The Paris Wife by Paula McLain

Read from 07/25/14 - 07/26/14
Rating: ★★★★

Brief Review
This is an intriguing story that follows the first few years of married life of Hadley Richardson and Ernest Hemingway. Both of them having endured difficult childhoods, they seem to be drawn to one another from the very beginning. It's a heartbreaking story told from the point of view of the "forgotten" wife of a very troubled but talented writer.

1. Called Ocean/Sea: (page 276)
There was the deep middle of the sea off an ocean liner at night, with only the stars as witness.

2. Bonus - Brown: (page 4)
When I look up again, he has his brown eyes locked on me.

3. Pearl: (page 181)
I promise not to drape her in pearls or meringue.

4. Champagne: (page 108)
When we won, we had champagne , and sometimes when we lost too, because we were happy to be there and be together, and what was money to us anyway?

5. Skull: (page 27)
Downstairs, behind the locked doors of his study, she found my father lying on the carpet in a pool of blood, his skull shattered.

Skull: ..pushing them back into his eyes- pg 162

Review- Joy Humbolt is young and lost, in a job she hates and looking for something to be passionate about. After breaking up with her boyfriend and getting fired, she impulsively gets a huge dog, Blue, and takes over a dog walking business from a woman who seems anxious to get out of town. She did not realize how much these decisions would change her life until a client's dog finds a faceless body in an alley and which lands Joy in the middle of a murder investigation. Although being repeatedly told to stay out of it by both good and bad guys, she persists- she feels compelled to help solve the crime. And she doesn't realize the danger until it's too late...

What I liked: Joy! I really liked her- she is funny, smart, sassy, and tougher than she realizes. I enjoyed all the characters- they were believable and interacted well with each other. I especially enjoyed the sibling connection between Joy and James.. The plot was good and I enjoyed the writing style as well.

What I didn't love: The book cover! It's actually confusing to me! The dog played a sporadic but important part in the story but it was a little disconnected for me.
Although I understand the serious nature of what Joy was getting into, even when she seemed naive or cavalier about it, I was sad with how permanent the consequences were and am not sure that was essential. Also, coming from an alcoholic mother, the siblings drank an awful lot- way more than I thought necessary- and it did not add to the story. She is accused of 'faking' alcoholism at one point but I didn't think so- she drank way too much. And there were way too many perfectly timed coincidences that were the perfect clues to solving the mystery but, hey, it's a fictional novel right?
All in all a fun read.

Jennifer H Week 3: Ocean & Brown

The Other Boleyn Girl (The Tudor Court, #2) by Philippa Gregory
The Other Boleyn Girl by Phillpa Gregory
Finished: 7/28/14
Rating: ♥♥♥♥♥

Ocean/Sea: across the seas (p. 121)
Pearl: embroidered with pearls (p. 78)
Flag: flying a greenwood flag (p. 141)
Skull: at the base of her skull (p. 33)
Brown: had faded to brown (p. 11)

Not only could I "not put it down," I couldn't stop thinking about it. I was utterly lost in the world, the drama and the intrigue of these characters that I carried the book everywhere I went just in case I'd have a free second to delve back in. The characters of Mary and Anne Boelyn are so fascinating. You feel so sympathetic toward both despite Anne's cruel ambition and Mary's inclination to perpetually forgive her sister's terrible betrayals. Ultimately, the story is about two women who attempt different paths toward gaining freedom and independence as women both trapped in a man's world. It was just riveting. Highly recommended!
