Kaaram | 1 comments Hi! I recently released my first self-published poetry book. This is an invitation into my personal process of reflection and elevation past certain, old phases in my life.

I would love to receive feedback from as many as possible on the content of the book! Thank you in advance.

PattyMacDotComma Just finished Mick Herron”s London Rules, his latest visit to the Slow Horses of Slough House. Still an entertaining bunch of demoted (“demented”?) spooks.

PattyMacDotComma I learned something myself from a couple of vividly illustrated, picture book biographies for young kids. I expect more than a few parents and teachers could benefit from these. I included a few pictures so you can see what they're like.

Bonyo Bonyo by Vanita Oelschlager is the true story of a poor Kenyan village boy with dreams of becoming a doctor.

Harriet Tubman by Isabel Sanchez Vegara is the story of a young girl who escaped slavery and joined the Underground Railroad. (And we're still waiting to see if she'll be on a new $20 bill!)

Kathleen | 401 comments Chrissie, I am so glad you enjoyed Their Eyes Were Watching God. What you said in your review is so true, that it must be experienced. I love that book SO much.

I'd like to recommend a book of poetry: Best Poems of the Brontë Sisters. For anyone who has enjoyed their novels, reading their verse is enlightening and it's interesting to compare to their prose. This is a thin little collection and quick to browse through. My review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

Durrant DEAD BAD a gripping crime mystery full of twists by Helen H. Durrant I didn't think that this was quite as good as the rest of the series, but is still a good read. Leslie | 16369 comments Too many posts since I last checked in for me to catch up on :/

I recently finished listening to the audiobook of Strangers on a Train. I have seen the Hitchcock film of this several times but the book was actually quite different. That surprised me a little but upon reflection, it shouldn't have as the book was more in line with Highsmith's style. In any case, it is a "must read" for any fan of mystery/crime books!

Chrissie I absolutely adored The Maytrees by Annie Dillard. I have given both this and her An American Childhood five stars. That doesn't mean you will necessarily like her writing as much as I do.

message 1689: by Petra (new)

Petra | 3324 comments I finished reading The Summer Book by Tove Jansson.
I enjoyed the writing and the Grandmother's character. Some of these stories were particularly touching. However, for me, these were short stories about Sophia and her grandmother; not a novel.
The stories were lovely insights into island life for these 2 characters but there wasn't a plot, per se.

PattyMacDotComma A terrific read for anyone interested in old Australia - and I mean OLD. Academic, but easy. (Footnotes are unobtrusively at the back.)
Deep Time Dreaming: Uncovering Ancient Australia by Aussie author Billy Griffiths does what it says - uncovers some wonderful history, archaeological and cultural.
