Jenny (jeoblivion) | 4893 comments I've finished a few books last week. My favourite was Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi which I found extraordinary in more ways than one, especially given the fact that this is her first novel.
I wrote a brief review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

I've also finished At Play in the Fields of the Lord by Peter Matthiessen who is slowly becoming one of my favourite authors, despite the fact that it usually takes me quite a while to get into a novel of his. I've seen this book compared to Heart of Darkness by Conrad and The Poisonwood Bible . I haven't read the latter so I can't compare it, but in a contest between Matthiessen and Conrad, Matthiessen would always win for me.

Last but not least: The Vegetarian by by Han Kang. I've listened to the German audio book of this one, and almost abandoned it after 10 minutes as the first narrator did such a dreadful job, but as the story is told from multiple perspectives and therefore different narrators it got better after that and I am glad I stuck with it. Very interesting portrait of what it means to struggle for autonomy.

Tamara Agha-Jaffar | 1426 comments I read The Member of the Wedding by Carson McCullers.

I loved it! I thought the language was beautiful, the characterization flawless, and her depiction of a young girl's confused emotions impeccable.

Thank you so much to Chrissie for recommending it.

Leslie | 16369 comments @Jenny - I had heard good things about The Vegetarian during last year's Tournament of Books. Glad that the audio improved as you went along!

Leslie | 16369 comments I finished Don DeLillo's Underworld. While I didn't have any trouble reading it, the structure of the book didn't really work for me and I ended up with a feeling of "so what was the point of all that?". Oh well...

Leslie | 16369 comments I have finished The Time Ships, a sequel to Wells' The Time Machine authorized by Wells' literary estate to commemorate its 100th anniversary. Baxter did a great job of remaining true to Wells' classic while bringing the story into the modern era of scientific thought.

Petra | 3324 comments I finished reading Educated: A Memoir by Tara Westover.
It was an uneven ride. There are parts of the story that aren't told but then there are also libel and slander laws that I'm sure Tara was careful of.
In the end, I found this to be a strong story of a personal struggle to find self, confidence, personal peace and a place of calm in Life.
