Petra | 3324 comments I won a copy of Dead Ground in Between by Maureen Jennings at my library this summer during their Summer reading program and I'm very happy that I did. I wouldn't have found this series otherwise, I think.
This is almost a cozy mystery, set in rural England during WWII.

dely | 5214 comments I have finished Bilal: Viaggiare, lavorare, morire da clandestini 5*

Sadly there isn't an English translation but I recommend this book to everyone that knows Italian or any other language the book has been translated.

I don't think I will write a review, but I could find a review in English that talks about the book very well. I add you the link if you are interested (there are mainly Italian reviews): https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

I can't stop crying after have finished this book. I already knew several things because it's a topic in which I'm very interested, but not so many (about all about the laws) and with all those details. I feel also so ashamed right now for Italy, their laws and how some police officers deal with illegal immigrants, and how some companies and employers exploit them. I have always seen Italians as good people, open people that want to help, but sadly it isn't always this way. Maybe common people are good, but there is always someone that exploits people for God Money.

Chrissie dely, thanks for the English review of the book. Will go read it now.

Yes, I think that her review is very helpful. I don't think I will be able to write something about that book. It's really hard for me.

dely | 5214 comments As usual I updated the discussion with my reading updates and I wanted to write only a couple of sentences about the book I've finished today. Well, at the end I have written really a lot though not enough to let understand how good this book is.

If someone is interested, here's the link to my opinions: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

message 113: by Leslie (new)

Leslie | 16369 comments I finished a young adult dystopian sci fi audiobook yesterday: Feed by M.T. Anderson. This novel won many awards when it came out (back in 2002) & I found it deserved them. Though YA is its intended audience, it had something serious to say even to an adult reader. The future it portrays was scarily possible.

Petra, I had honestly never heard of him before this book popped up on a list somewhere as a seminal suspense thriller. I was impressed!

I still have to read something by him. A few of his books are in my wishlist since several years, but I never managed to read them.

message 125: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie dely, The World of Yesterday and Letter from an Unknown Woman I now want to read too. The first is autobiographical, written right before he committed suicide with his wife.

The first one is in my wishlist and the second seems very interesting. Let's hope to read something by him next year.

Chrissie dely, I like to read some of an author's fictional books, if they have written such, before biographies. Then I have a feel for how they write.

Ooh, a book I've read! I don't get it though - it has a 3.5 rating and it got all those awards. It felt to me like the author was trying to convey some wise message, but I didn't get it. apparently I'm not the only one. It has atmosphere, I'll grant that.

message 134: by Chinook (new)

Chinook | 543 comments Thanks everyone! I credit my discovery of audiobooks with how many books I’ve read this past year - Maddie likes to nurse to sleep with an audiobook playing and I usually listen while doing chores too. Since reading is my thing, when I want some solo time I usually get Wyatt to drop me off at a bookstore-cafe-bar near us and read while he takes the kids somewhere.

message 135: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie Chinook, glad you like audiobooks now.

Chinook | 543 comments I just needed to tune my ears in, I think. Learn to listen more attentively.

message 137: by Chrissie (last edited Oct 31, 2017 12:57PM) (new)

Chrissie Chinook, it does take practice. I have to take notes, I helps me to see names and stuff written as words, this helps me remember . I do not read my notes later unless I want to check a date or some small detail I may have jotted down.

At a meal when you are alone or if you are too tired to talk, they are nice too.

Haha Angela, no worries. It's only rarely that I read a book I dislike; I can almost always tell in advance, and I like a very wide range of sorts of books. You haven't let me down yet. :)

I do hope you enjoy it !

Chrissie I have completed Red Famine: Stalin's War on Ukraine, 1921-1933.

My review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

This is the second book by Anne Applebaum that I have given three stars. Three stars DOES mean I think it is worth reading and I did like it, although I do have some reservations.
