PattyMacDotComma I've been meaning to read Kent Haruf's much-loved Plainsong for years, and I'm glad I finally did. Wonderful people on the plains of Colorado. He wrote two more books about them, so I can see where they go.

PattyMacDotComma The short story, Sweat, is from the American South. The acclaimed Harlem Renaissance writer, Zora Neale Hurston, wrote wonderful, real dialogue. This is from 1926 - I loved it.

Tamara Agha-Jaffar | 1408 comments I read Winter in Sokcho by Elisa Shua Dusapin; translated from the French by Aneesa Abbas Higgins.
The narrator is a young woman working in a run-down resort hotel close to the demilitarized zone between North and South Korea. Very little action occurs since most of it takes place beneath the surface. The novel's strength lies in the narrator's interiority.

PattyMacDotComma I'm sure we've all been guilty of Keeping Up Appearances or worrying 'what will the neighbours think'. Aussie author Tricia Stringer gives us a group of older women in a small South Australian town who think they know all the town's secrets. HA! I can see why the author is so popular.

Tamara Agha-Jaffar | 1408 comments I read Year of Wonders by Geraldine Brooks. A historical novel about the plague in a seventeenth-century English village. Unfortunately, what was otherwise a good historical novel, in elegant language and immersive detail, was spoiled by its improbable and somewhat bizarre ending.
