PattyMacDotComma I recently read The Burgess Boys by one of my favourite authors, Elizabeth Strout. When your sister needs you, back in the hometown you so happily escaped, what's a man to do?

PattyMacDotComma I also just enjoyed another delightful escapade with The Honourable Phryne Fisher, the luscious sleuth created by Australian favourite, Kerry Greenwood. 1920s Melbourne is where Miss Fisher investigates a Murder on the Ballarat Train.

Tamara Agha-Jaffar | 1410 comments I read The Book of Night Women by Marlon James. A slave narrative set in Jamaica. Very graphic violence. An amazing narrative voice and a remarkable achievement.

Joy D I had recently read and very much enjoyed West with the Night, Beryl Markham’s memoir, so I decided to follow it up with this historical fiction based on her life. I think it will appeal to those that enjoy historical romances, but for me it was just ok.

Circling the Sun by Paula McLain - 2 stars - My Review

Back from my three weeks in my personal paradise - Sardinia! - I've read some really beautiful books.
Two are really Italian - don't even think they've been translated, and I don't really know if, translated, could be fully appreciated by someone not from our little, whimsical country - Il regalo del mandrogno and Prima di noi.
One other is Spanish, and really worth reading: Terra Alta by Javier Cercas; the other fro USA: Ohio by Stephen Markley. Of this last here's my review, if you're interested:

Tamara Agha-Jaffar | 1410 comments Read An Imaginary Life by David Malouf.

Malouf envisions the life of the Roman poet Ovid after he has been exiled to the outskirts of the Roman Empire. An interesting re-creation that can be interpreted on many levels.

Tamara Agha-Jaffar | 1410 comments Read How It All Began by Penelope Lively.
An elderly woman's mugging in a London street triggers a series of events with characters whose lives intersect. Penelope Lively weaves an entertaining tale illustrating the butterfly effect. Her narrative voice is funny and engaging. I recommend it if you're looking for something light to read.

Paul Lockman | 72 comments Earlier in the week I finished The Sun Does Shine: How I Found Life and Freedom on Death Row by Anthony Ray Hinton, amazing but gut wrenching story, he was wrongfully convicted and spent nearly 30 years on death row before being released in 2015. Gave it 5 stars. Here’s my review

Tamara Agha-Jaffar | 1410 comments I read American Indian Women by Patrick Deval, translated from the French by Jane-Marie Todd.
I recommend it for anyone interested in learning more about the contributions of American Indian women. The photographs alone, dating from the late nineteenth to early twentieth century, were amazing.
