Tamara Agha-Jaffar | 1410 comments I read Island of a Thousand Mirrors by Nayomi Munaweera about the civil war in Sri Lanka told through the voices of two young women on opposite sides of the ethnic divide. The writing was lyrical, eloquent, and immersive. I highly recommend it.

Tamara Agha-Jaffar | 1410 comments I read Dead Blondes and Bad Mothers: Monstrosity, Patriarchy, and the Fear of Female Power by Sady Doyle, a feminist exploration of how popular culture reflects and reinforces patriarchal norms. The work is well-researched, educational, and insightful. In spite of some of the gruesome details of real-life crimes against women, Doyle manages to inject a touch of humor in her exploration where appropriate so the work is not all doom and gloom.

Pam Baddeley | 1529 comments Read Anne Bronte's two novels though probably unfortunately in the wrong order:

Joy D Set in Australia in 1885, this novel is a story of brothers driven apart by differing convictions. It is a story of twisting the “law” for nefarious purposes. It is a historic novel based on the Native Police of the time, conducting “dispersal” (genocide) of native people to accommodate colonial settlers. I found it well-crafted and extremely disturbing (content warning for brutality, rape, and murder). It has inspired me to read more about Australian history.

Amalia, your profile is set to Private (again), so only your friends can see the review if they click on the link. You and I have fallen off each other's friends list (again). It happens to me with one other GR friend regularly, but I have no idea why, and I have no way to contact you other than to hope you check in here!

PattyMacDotComma I've enjoyed all the Graham Brack novels I've read so far, and the second in the Master Mercurius historical mystery series is another winner. Untrue till Death takes place in the Netherlands in the 17th century, full of murder and intrigue with the author's trademark humour.
Untrue till Death by Graham Brack 4.5★ Link to my Untrue Till Death review

Tamara Agha-Jaffar | 1410 comments Finished Just Call Me Superhero by Alina Bronsky, translated from the German by Tim Mohr.
I've loved everything I've read by her so far. This is a compelling coming-of-age story about a seventeen-year-old boy whose face has been badly disfigured by a Rottweiler. The boy has a strong narrative voice and he's very funny.
