Waiting to start the long awaited To Paradise - probably saturday on my long train voyage to Milan to my daughter - I'm relaxing with a "cozy-mistery" I think someone here suggested me: A Scone to Die For.
Cats and scones: these are "two" of my favourite things...

Charbel (queez) | 2729 comments I finished The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller. Overall, I liked it despite having some issues with it. I do think that the praise it gets is a tad exaggerated, but I can see why so many people love it so much.

Thanks Greg! I'm going mainly for cuddling her: she's under exams and "needs" some carring: catering, shopping, distractions!

Teri-K | 1388 comments Very blah January, plus I've been under the weather, so I'm rereading/listening to my favorite of the In Death books. Right now I'm on Fantasy in Death by J.D. Robb. Plus there's a new one out early next month!

Also reading Soul Music by Terry Pratchett and Heroes: The Greek Myths Reimagined by Stephen Fry.

Fantasy in Death (In Death, #30) by J.D. Robb Soul Music (Discworld, #16; Death, #3) by Terry Pratchett Heroes The Greek Myths Reimagined (Stephen Fry's Great Mythology #2) by Stephen Fry

Sound fun Teri-K, and Pratchett & Fry would be definitely up my alley. I haven't read Robb before.

Hope you feel better soon!

Recently finished The Rime of the Ancient Mariner by Samuel Taylor Coleridge and The Shadow of the Gods by John Gwynne. I loved both of them. I thought the Gwynne one was loads of fun!

Now, I'm reading The Prophets by Robert Jones Jr., about halfway through. The writing style appeals to me . . . very impressionistic and metaphoric. About two slaves who form a same-sex relationship on a Southern plantation.

Also, I'm working my way through The Aeneid with another group at a leisurely pace of one book/chapter a week. I'm surprised at how much I love it! I suspect I'm on course to like it as much as The Oedipus Cycle. Of course half of the translating duo of the one translated the other; so that's probably part of what I'm reacting to. And Aeneas strikes me as a much less stolid and more human character than the heroes in the Illiad; so that helps too. (Extra bonus: when I get to book/chapter 4, I can read Seamus Heaney's translation of Book IV: Aeneid Book VI!)

I'm reading The Aeneid, too. Which translation are you using? I'm using Shadi Bartsch, as I wanted to try a more modern one.

I loved Rime when I was a girl. My Grandad had a big illustrated version I read quite a few times. :)

Yes, the one I read is a big illustrated version too - it's lovely! :)

On the Aeneid, I'm reading the Fitzgerald translation, which I really like so far! I was looking for a translation with some poetry to it and not too dry/academic. For book IV, I will switch to the translation by Seamus Heaney - unfortunately, he only translated book IV.

How do you like the Bartsch translation? I didn't look at that one.

I'm enjoying Bartsch. It moves along well, which is what I was looking for. I like Fitzgerald's Odyssey - that's my favorite of the early epics and I've read several translations. I never made it through Aeneid before, so I wanted an accurate version but not too flowery. :)

I love Heaney's Beowulf. I've read it several times, and listened to him reading, too, which is great fun. His accent is lovely, and I always think it's wonderful to listen to a poet read his work.

Charbel (queez) | 2729 comments This the second short story book I've read. I've read The Last Wish and loved it. I'm already quite familiar with the universe because of the games and the Netflix series. I am planning on getting through all the books, but I'm reading them in a recommended order rather than the release order.
