To expand on what Niki said, I'm saving the A-Z challenge and the Book Cover challenge for every new series I start in 2018... any continuations (book 2 onwards) I'm just crediting to the Incomplete Challenge...

and I really need to update that thing... I've logged my books through December 19th, but I haven't edited the official lists at the top since October/November...

you type "y" or "n" the formula will take care of the rest. check out the example sheet.

message 205: by C.P. (new)

C.P. Cabaniss (cpcabaniss) | 1578 comments If you go to the sheet, at the top their is the "edit" option. This should let you request to edit.

Not sure that made any sense...

Good idea prepopulating it with some of the books you're going to read Hacen (w/0 filling in the pages yet so it doesn't generate unearned points).

Ahdam (snowlocke) | 2429 comments Love the spreadsheet Rob just sent my request to edit I think I mostly get it fortunately I worked with spreadsheets in GCSE ICT so I know basic stuff about sells and formulas (that is if I haven't already forgotten it haha)

I read too much to start pre-populating my list too far out, if I want my list to be in chronological reading order... so I started using column K to pre-count pages...

Question: Am I going to have to re-request edit access every day?... I slept for 6-8hrs and I'm back in view mode and I need to ask for edit privileges again for some reason... I'm still logged into google... with some searching, I'm wondering if you set an expiration timer on it or something?

message 212: by Timelord Iain, Tech Support (new)

Timelord Iain | 35239 comments Mod
I actually found that I still have the sheet open from when I lost access, this is what it says:

Access denied
You no longer have permission to access this document, so your changes can't be saved. If you believe this is an error, contact the document owner. If your access is restored, you will be able to continue working.

message 213: by Rob (last edited Dec 31, 2017 04:58PM) (new)

Rob (nefariasbredd) | 2418 comments The problem is probably occuring because each person is setting the protection when I should probably be the only one setting it.

I think, since this is all on the honor system, will simplify and just give everyone write access. What this means though is that I highly recommend everyone back up their sheet when make edits to it.

Update=as far as I can tell it looks correct. Each sheet that becomes locked should have access for me and the sheet owner only.

Timelord Iain | 35239 comments Mod
alright... sent another edit request... we'll see if it sticks this time... there are sure to be some hiccups until everyone gets used to the system :)

message 215: by Rob (last edited Dec 31, 2017 05:14PM) (new)

Rob (nefariasbredd) | 2418 comments It should have worked. For what it's worth, it is set as "anyone who has the link can edit" it since not everyone has a gmail account. It may be the protecting the sheets on top of it might be messing things up.

If you're having issues, email me directly here for a quicker response. (Though I may or may not be that responsive the rest of the night since its like new years eve or something).

message 216: by Timelord Iain, Tech Support (new)

Timelord Iain | 35239 comments Mod
Yea, no worries... I'm used to time delays working nights and having to deal with "day people" :)... There's not much to be doing on the sheets yet, anyway, except all my extra things I'm doing in the side area to help myself later on...

Diana Stormblessed (dashichka) | 5356 comments Rob this is brilliant. I'm kind of jealous that I didn't think of it first. Thank you for putting it together!

We've come across a real interesting page count with The Way of Kings over in the page counting thread we started last night...

Most English editions are between 1007 and 1258 pages... but there's an ebook edition listed as 2401 and a Nook edition listed as 3159 pages... I don't think they're really measuring pages, tho... I think we should ignore them in this case... thoughts?

I don't see Words of Radiance or Oathbringer editions exceeding 1600 pages...

message 221: by Saar The Book owl (new)

Saar The Book owl | 3095 comments I think you can go with the English editions? I have no experience with the other editions, but it's strange that there's such a difference.

message 222: by Timelord Iain, Tech Support (new)

Timelord Iain | 35239 comments Mod
It's an English ebook... Nook is just the Barnes & Noble branded e-reader/file... that's the problem...

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT:

Regarding the page count for the team reading challenge. After realizing all of the mess this is causing, the mods have decided that we will be going with the page count of the most popular edition on Goodreads.

The exception to this would be if you actually do read it in another language, then go with the most popular edition for that language.

The reasoning behind it: go check out the book page count thread. It says it all... too much work... We do thank Iain for organizing it all, but we realize that it will just cause more and more work as time goes by.

message 224: by Rob (last edited Jan 02, 2018 06:40PM) (new)

Rob (nefariasbredd) | 2418 comments Just some quick notes about the google sheet. Two ways I can set it.

1) Everyone with the link can edit. This is the honor system and all already, so doing it this way does not require everyone to have a google account. BUT, everyone has to be careful not to accidentally edit the wrong sheet.

2) I can set it so that it is exclusive and set up so that people have access to edit only their sheet and their team capt, but then anyone without a google/gmail account might not be able to set the sheet at all. I guess i pays to be an android user?

For now, I'm keeping it at #1. Let me know if you have any issues. You can always go to the "file" menu and download or make a copy of it to back up your work as well. I'll see what I can do about keeping it backed up regularly regardless.

oh and again that link is:

Here

Thanks, and enjoy!

-Rob

Timelord Iain | 35239 comments Mod
I'm sure it'll be interesting... some people will chug along with a bunch of 300 page reads, then someone will finish an Oathbringer or something and shoot up 1200 pages + bonus points... that leaderboard Rob built should fluctuate a lot...

Rob (nefariasbredd) | 2418 comments Thanks to someone's suggestion, I linked everyone's tab directly to the main page of the sheet. So should be easier to navigate about.

And now I shall read or something as I don't earn points for the Blood Eagles for my spreadsheet skillz.

Rob (nefariasbredd) | 2418 comments Hi guys - FYI - you need not request access to the sheet. I think everytime someone does and I grant it, it resets the permissions. So follow the public link instead.

I'm not sure if your link changed a setting or something, because once I started moving around the sheet, my bookmark still matched the URL I saved before...

Timelord Iain | 35239 comments Mod
It should... new threads tend to catch people's eye more than comments buried in other threads... as Margret pointed out when I started that discussion about books/topics we won't read a week or 2 ago...

I just think this group has us in the habit of leaving thread creation to the mods :)

message 243: by Niki Hawkes, I made it past GOTM... barely (new)

Niki Hawkes - The Obsessive Bookseller | 7639 comments Mod
That's probably my fault - I can get a little particular about organization (I know, shocker).

Actually, Rob, if you wouldn't mind copying that same post into a new thread in this folder, that would be stellar. That way if any changes happen in the future you can just update that thread and the original comment and you don't have to go through a mod.

message 244: by Rob (new)

Rob (nefariasbredd) | 2418 comments One query - I take it we can only apply one challenge per book used? Should we be requiring persons to put in their log or the google sheet a note on the far right what challenge the book is meeting?

Just a nitpicky thought :)

I'm having them indicate on the scorecard here, but that's not a bad idea.

message 248: by Saar The Book owl (new)

Saar The Book owl | 3095 comments A little question: does it need to be SF or Fantasy or are other genres allowed? Besides SF/F I also read other things...

message 249: by Petrik (new)

Petrik (petrikleo) | 1546 comments Guys, I really think you guys shouldn't put the page number on the scoresheet till you're truly done with the book. The score is a mess! It's not even accurate right now because almost everything is still on progress and the pages are already there. Just my opinion though... I mean if we're doing it this way, I can just put all my TBR for this year immediately and the points would blow up!

message 250: by Saar The Book owl (new)

Saar The Book owl | 3095 comments Yes, Petrik, I follow you on that. The simplest way is to put the page number when you've finished the book. So you see an actual score.
